Much preferred the look of the Qunari in DA2 compared to DAI (who agrees?)

We have topics about the Hair, armor and general complexion of the Qunari. But I wanted to just throw it out there as an overall point regarding the race that I personally much preferred the physical appearance and look of the Qunari in Dragon Age 2 than what was visualized for them in Dragon Age Inquisition.

Let's just compare them. Here is Qunari concept art and in-game from DA2:

Concept:

In-Game:

And Dragon Age Inquisition. I do not recall what concept art specifically was used in DAI promotion of Qunari. So here is just in-game:

So yeah, while I will acknowledge the fact that DA2's Qunari had very little facial differences between the characters, I still found their features, characteristics and style more appealing and interesting than DAI's Qunari.

What also bothers me about DAI's Qunari is how they look more like giant humans with horns as opposed to the more "alien" style of DA2. And also egregious, in Iron Bull's case especially, is how small the head is compared to the body. The Arishok by comparison had a much more proportional head and figure than Iron Bull.

Without mod support, it unfortunately falls to Bioware if they want to release more Qunari customization and facial and hair options. I know I'd gladly purchse a pack of that, even if it meant lots of "clipping".

I completely agree.

I wonder why they did away with the black eyes in DA:I. Besides the horns it was easily one of the most distinguishing feature of the Qunari and made them seem more Dragon-like.

Thankfully it's not too difficult to approximate the look of the DA2 Qunari with the character creator, but it certainly seems like the Qunari are a bit too pretty (or too easily made pretty) to feel like they did in the previous game.

Same.

Qunarii in DA 2 had something special.

Now, they've a human face on a Qunarii body.

It's like someone didn't wanted to make his life harder in the graphical departement along with making hairs.

I would've so much prefered that they scrap multi players instead..

Agree as well loved the look of the Arishok and all his charges. Bull, OTOH, looks pretty awful even if he is more detailed.

Completely agree. I realize Bioware might not be able to get exactly like DA2 in Inq at this point so I wont even ask for it, but please Bioware, if you are reading this, try to do something to get some sort of compromise going. What things look like now is really not that great :-/

It's sad that the first time Qunari are playable and they look in this state, maybe more hair variations can make up for it somewhat, and at least maybe increase head size? Because it's SO SMALL on such a big body (On male body anyway)

I agree. Overall, I'm really disappointed by the Qunari. Be it the horns, the hair options, or even the facial features. I'm not satisfied with any of it.

When I found out that the Qunari are playable, I was looking forward to create characters that look like this. Unfortunately, that is not even remotely possible.

In Dragon Age 2, they had that demonic, gargoyle-ish vibe. Now they are just giant people with horns.

No. It was one of the many things I hated about DA2.

I'd have to agree, looking at the images you posted.

That's exactly it.

Agreed with both of you! I was so psyched to be able to play a Qunari in DAI in particular because I really really loved the visual upgrade (IMO) they got in DA2 compared to the ugly unappealing "Sten" look in DAO:

Sten_new.jpg

To me the design has taken a step backwards and they tried to make the Qunari look more like Sten than how they looked in DA2. At the same time, I also wouldn't be surprised if they cut corners on widely different facial and head shapes that the DA2-type Qunari would require in the CC for technical reasons.

I do not know if they would be able to provide a content update with better appearances, but I would hope that for future installments of Dragon Age, they return to the style of DA2 at the least. :(

Love the game but this also bugged me. The face paint helps a bit but they need more. Hoping for a customization dlc. Something packed with armors and hairstyles.

I am perhaps hoping a bit much here but a new face preset that resembles a bit more like DA2 qunari would be amazing too

I really feel maybe more hairstyles that didnt look awful would go a long way though and probably the most realistic thing for them to do, even if I hope them do more as a big qunari fan

I think allowing the tattoos from the concept art would go a long way for qunari. I'd rather have a permanent face tattoo of my choosing than random helmet tattoos. Switch those out and put real qunari helmets in.

I'm sure a dedicated person could recreate the Arishock in DAI's CC. Minus the horns. That said, I think it's really the hairline region that gave the DA2 Qunari that signature look, and that is absent.

If you had Bioware's lore books you'd probably find that the DA2 Qunari were a certain type, similarly Iron Bull is not the same as the Inquisitor. You could make Sten, almost pixel perfect, in DAI CC.

If they could just do something about the hair. The lack of styles, yes, but in terms of quality, the Qunari hair is just really poor. Where the other races are doing neat things with the alpha channel to give the hair a neat "hair" look, the Qunari have wheat strapped to their scalp.

Nah...CC is pretty good, but it's not just about hair and horns...qunari face morphs are too different, it's impossible to recreate Arishok or another DA2 Qunari...forehead, brows, eyes, nose\bridge, jaw\chin are different, I tried to make my Qunari to look like DA2 Qunari for a long time, but it's impossible trust me :\

Yeah I tried really hard to make a Qunari look something close to what they look like in DA2 and just couldn't do it. There's just not enough facial settings or complexion options that can create those particular bone structures in the face and forehead and none of the Horn options have those either.

That's actually another thing, the Horns look like they were just slapped on a human head, they do not look like they are organically part of the skull itself. I mean, sure you're going to not get good transitions like that in a CC which is supposed to be customizable. But none of the options feel like they "fit" to me, IMO.

The hair is a pretty big part of it, as all the cool concepts of Qunari have long hair (certainly longer than any of the options in the CC). I mean, even something like this would have been acceptable:

Part of the issue, I think is that DA2 qunari didn't need to have real facial expressions, they were all defaulted to Resting B**ch/Murder Face and all their character came through in their animations and voice acting.  DA:I qunari, however, have expressions, and that makes them look a lot less alien and more human than DA2 qunari.  So I think DA:I qunari were always going to look more human than before just by virtue of most people not wanting to play a character whose face doesn't move, but there's other changes that were less unavoidable, like the less dramatic horn shape, the gentler brow, the awful hair, the unclawed hands, the odder proportions, etc.  I would have liked a middle ground between the two versions, but I'm thankful we got them at all.

Iron Bull's face didn't sit right with me but I couldn't put my finger on what was the problem. Now i see.

I liked Sten though, Would have preferred the Qunari being a human culture rather than a different race. I was not a fan of DA2 design but it's better than the in between look of DAI.

I preferred the art style of DA2 in general, but everyone thinks realism is better now-a-days so that's what we got.

Well, even if the goal was a more realistic style. Then it would have been nice to be able to craft something looking more like this, the Arishok from the realistic CG trailer. I mean, yeah, the hair again would probably be impossible to do given current tech, but then just shorten it like they did in-game.

I also find the look of the Qunari in DA2 to be the most interesting and appealing.

The Qunari in Inquisition is much more characteristic than Sten in Origins, so I'd put Inquistion as no. 2, with the design from DA2 taking the top spot for sure B)

They just need to settle down on designs,

It seems to be the Navi/Avatar elves from DA2 are also gone, unless its subtle and i cant notice.
