These are largely twitch abilities. Can I get the AI to use them instead?

My AI uses Block and Slash all the time, but the ability is set to preferred. The AI's timing is also exceptional when they do decide to use it, and this has improved their survivability significantly.

However, I've never seen them use dodge-like abilities other than Leaping Shot, even if those abilities are set to preferred.

Ive seen the AI fade step. It does it badly and apparently when it has nothing else available to use not really when it needs to.

I've found the AI to be pretty decent with Parry abilities and Evades.

You have to realize what an AI is to know what it will be good at.  Abilities like Parry and Evade are great because of low/no cooldown, so they don't have to be used sparingly or intelligently, all you have to do is time them right.  Abilities that require common sense should be left to the player.  Abilities that only require a twitch response to something typical, like being attacked, can generally be handled superbly by the AI.

I got a twitter response from combat designer Michael Liaw. He says they should work, but they are intended not to evade or block every single incoming attack, which he says a human player could theoretically do.

I'm yet to see any party members I'm not controlling parry, but I've seen Blackwall and Cassandra pull off some well-timed shield walls.

Never seen them do a shield wall on mine. I assume they have to put on 'preferred'?

I have zero problems with Cass using shield wall.

The only skill I have set to "preferred" is "War Cry", the rest are all left on normal.

I set those abilities to preferred, and they seem to use them more often.

The AI does use Fade Step, but doesn't always do it very well. Also, beware of having it on while fighting rifts. Sometimes the AI will Fade Step away from a rift after being hit, and if you focus that character it can reset the rift.

the ai use roll sometime, but to evade, not to place behind an enemy...

I will try with parry...

But the problem with DAI, is : If you want the AI use a power/spell/capacity, you need absolutely to map it to controller shortcuts...

If spell/skill is not mapped to shortcut, the AI will not use your it, even if the spell/skill is set as favorite (preferred) ...

It is a HUGE Dragon Age Inquisition BUG (i hope developers will solve it quickly)...

In DAO and DA2 the AI was using all the spells placed in tactics, no need to map them to controller shortcuts... And better than in DAI, in DAO you can fine tune priority to tactics (to spells)... The tactics system was definitely better in DAO/DA2...

Actually, if the spells aren't in your action bar in both DA:O and DA2, they still don't get used if they're put on tactics.

So, the AI will use shield wall to block attacks?

Yes, both my PC warrior and Cassandra use Block and Slash, also Combat Roll. Varric uses Dodge, Solas uses Fade Step.

Block and Slash seems to get used a lot more than Combat Roll, but a good example of them all using evade abilities well is with Terror Demons when they teleport, they will evade out of the way before getting knocked down.
