(Warning: minor spoilers - and implications of large spoilers)
Dear EA / Bioware,
Recently I purchased Dragon Age: Inquisition (The Deluxe Edition). I specifically purchased an Alienware mx 17 to play this game - the laptop is equipped with an i7 processor, AMD Radeon R9 M290X graphics card and plenty of memory, needless to say I can run the game on ultra graphics settings without gameplay or cinematics being affected in the slightest. To give you context I have been playing it since its launch on the 18th of November and have played for 55 hours so far, completing numerous side quests, the main storyline quest and killing 2 dragons. The average level of my party is 18. I have achieved 32 of the 50 online achievements through Origin.
Having played countless PC RPG games for the last 15 years I must give credit where credit is due: the visuals and environments of the game are stunning, the new game engine is brilliant and the combat effects, such as spell-casting, are particularly breathtaking. I think Dragon Age: Inquisition could have the potential to be the best single player RPG ever made. That being said I have never given any feedback to developers about a game. I had to break my silence now as I did mention the word "potential". I find this game incredible which why I have gone to the effort of writing this, please bear in mind all feedback is meant to be constructive in nature and never pejorative. I hope through the next patch you might take some of the following suggestions into account, some being trivial but relevant, others perhaps hoping for too much. I have gone to painstaking effort to collate these, to all other players of this amazing game that agree with some (if not all) of these points, please bump this post so that it might reach the right people. Feel free to add your suggestions below too. There are some spoilers. This feedback is just my personal opinion, in no way do I intend to be offensive, just to contribute towards making an already great game even better. Here are my hopes for the next patch/es, in no particular order:
Patch 1.1 Suggestions:
- Fog of war on local maps slightly translucent to show the underlying map so that players have an idea of area perimeters and accessible areas.
- Searching highlights lootable items on the mini map - slightly faded if they are above or below the player's character. There should be different ping sound options available, with the player being able to mute these sounds entirely if they prefer (lootable items should be visible on the mini map as mentioned).
- Fixed search item reveals such as ladders, fast travel markers etc should have a different colour highlight border and different ping sound, allowing players to know when all lootable items in the vicinity have been collected. Basically there should be certain search filters available.
- Pressing 'shift' allows the players party to walk, especially within places such as camps, forts and Skyhold. Would also come in handy when mining on precarious ledges.
- Allow players to sprint (faster than default run) in short bursts, especially in areas where mounts are not available, perhaps with the caps lock key.
- Improved inventory interface (too layered).
- Party auto-engages attacking enemies.
- Storage in Skyhold.
- Inquisitor armour shown in Skyhold.
- Full key-mapping available.
- Players should be able to loot corpses by left clicking. Regardless, whatever key looting is bound to the controlled character should automatically run within range to collect the selected item, even if it is a slight distance away
- Loot should scale to level. My party at level 16 attacked and killed a level 18 dragon which dropped level 12 items, I couldn't fathom how I wasn't rewarded for my efforts, expecting it to drop items between levels 16 to 20 at least.
- Pressing 'y' allows the party to sheathe their weapons even if engaged by AI, so that they can flee at full speed from unfavourable fights.
- When using my primary skill mapped to the number 1 key, I often accidentally bring up the console screen that is accessed by the key above the tab key - please remove this or allow to bind it to a key I never use, that is incredibly far away from keys used regularly - it's unbelievably annoying and totally breaks immersion. I don't even know what the point of that screen is.
- In options, the players can enable an 'auto search' option, which automatically sends out a search constantly and makes the search radius invisible - I am pedantic when gaming and it gets a bit tiring constantly pressing 'v' throughout the entire game: this reflects the fact that your party members are constantly vigilant of anything that might aid their quest.
- We understand the need for realism within the game, there should be an option to enable insta-looting, insta-mining and insta-harvesting should the player wish. I enjoyed hearing the pickaxe or trimming scissors for about thirty minutes, after that the novelty was lost very quickly and it just slows the game down. Or perhaps clicking the middle mouse button could send the nearest companion to go and harvest.
- After a battle players should be allowed to loot once and collect everything off all fallen enemies within the immediate vicinity.
- When on roads, autorun should have improved pathfinding so that the players character will run along the route of the road, running around rocks and other impassable objects.
- Collecting or harvesting should not cancel autorun, similarly when autorun is enabled, if the player runs into a door it should open automatically, presumably the inquisitor knows where the door handles in Skyhold are and I tire of opening the many doors to get to the war council.
- Fast travel directly to the war council should be a fast travel option.
- Party members should regenerate health when out of combat, even if incredibly slowly.
- Players should have some say in the allocation of skill points... perhaps I'd like my mage to sacrifice some magical damage for hit points.
- XP gain from reading a codex should be shown.
- There should be an option to hide only the Inquisitor's helmet, not the entire party's.
- More higher tier 4 items should be available for purchase or as drops, my party is already level 18 and I have yet to see a single item, it would be nice to be enticed.
- Party AI is bad at times: Mages should stay in range but as far from the melee as possible while archers should run for higher ground as soon as battle commences. AI uses focus abilities at the wrong times, it should be able to discern if the threat level of the enemy warrants using a focus ability and use it appropriately. I had Solas wasting a firestorm on two lone bandits.
- Besides healing potions, the AI should be able to discern when the use of a secondary equipped potion is necessary, perhaps after enabling this in the tactics screen.
- It seemed a bit lazy on the programming side that when the inquisitor mounts up, companions disappear - they should all mount up when the Inquisitor does on character specific mounts - The Iron Bull on a bull clad in iron, now that's what I'm talking about.
- When mounted and autorunning, mounts should have improved pathfinding and the player should have the ability to order the mount to autoride to the marker they have set on the map automatically, using the most expedient route there. If the marker the player has set is unreachable, when the mount gets as close as it can the marker should disappear to inform the player that this location is unreachable by any means.
- If the 'f' key is used to mount up, why can't the same key be used to unmount? I found myself repeatedly pressing 'f' shaking my head every time it didn't unmount.
- Geological survey requisitions completed in an area should show all possible herb and ore node locations as dots in an area, which when regenerated appear on the local map once more.
- Treasure map requisitions should be added, that when completed, show players the location of all lootable chests in the area.
- Different coloured floating text in battles indication crits, stealth, bleeding, poison, flanking and magic damage.
- The ability to re-colour armour in Skyhold's undercroft, using the pigment from different herbs harvested.
- Outcome variants for using different advisers to complete different operations should be shown beforehand, or is the only difference the time it takes, this should be clarified.
- Completed operation pins should be removed from the war table, they are pointless clutter.
- There should be an option to auto-run a mineral operation (perhaps while playing only after a Y/N confirmation in-game) and resource operations should have tiny minerals and herb icons shown above them to allow a player to quickly choose which resources they want to gather.
- Clicking on a completed operations pin that unlocked a new area should automatically bring up an option to fast travel there with a "do you wish to fast travel to this location" message.
- There should be an option to 'lock in' one's preferred party on the missions screen, we understand you want players to use different combinations of characters, but once I have my party designed and planned I tend to stick with that combination and shouldn't have to manually select the same companions for every mission, even when leaving Skyhold, if I want to remove one from my 'locked in' party I should be able to do this manually.
- There should be more random encounters: when you control all the camps in an area you should see your troops patrolling the area, clashing with enemy troops or wildlife, the same goes for enemy patrols. There should be massive enemy patrols that you need to call in your own patrol to fight and with their aid they are beatable. Enemy patrols should occasionally wander into your camps to remind you that nowhere is safe.
- The circle of life: wildlife should prey on itself, with smaller animals eating the bigger, or bigger animals trampling over predators and the player able to loot what is killed. More diversification in wildlife types. Killing a lot of one animal leads to an increase of another animal's population due to lack of natural predators, if this is present already it should be a lot more visible.
- The 'leave conversation' button should reset all conversation, it's not ideal that when you talk to a NPC that you have left the conversation, you pick up again at the same exact point.
- Respeccing should be free and there should be an option within the character record page to reset all skill points at any time, player should be able to reclass at a costly price - this would allow players to experience all combinations and classes in one playthrough, as well as allowing a player to complete all the specializations across classes in one playthrough, I know this may interfere with dialogue options, NPC's would just refer to the players character as whichever class they are at the moment of speaking.
- Introducing options to dual-specialize within one class?
- All characters should have romance options for any other character, perhaps sometimes more persuading would be necessary in unusual match ups, but anyone can fall in love with anyone, in real life and Thedas should be no exception. Love is a battlefield.
- Not including a companion within your inquisition (or kicking them out if they are already there) should have some benefit for the inquisition, which are shown when you make this choice. If I could I would kick all companions that I don't use directly out of the inquisition for these bonuses.
- Modifications to Skyhold should not be only aesthetic but also functional, quarries and logging stands should generate rock and timber continually as a usable resource, in greater numbers depending on how many you control (enemies should be able to seize these back too when you are not in the area). Modifications should possibly include constant influence, power, gold, XP, magic item find for example. Or even Dragon Research which allows you to pinpoint the weaknesses of each dragon.
- The huge pillared hall in Skyhold should be used as a trophy room where you can view the creatures you've fought and their bestiary and abilities, perhaps built through creature research. Disappointed it didn't develop at all.
- The side room of the Inquisitor's bedroom containing casks of ale should have shelves where valuables can be placed to admire.
- Even if it only restores 5 to 10% health, there really should be an accessible combat healing spell or templar ability, I'm sure there's someone out there who knows how to heal mid-fight. The Knight Enchanter specialization's signature spell builds up too slowly for it to be of any consistent use.
- Without revealing any specifics, people should be warned beforehand that if they do not complete certain companion's side quests then those companions won't be available for the final storyline mission.
- Varric can't be the only person to possess a crossbow in Thedas surely. The crossbow should be a ranged weapon that uses strength instead of dexterity and has its own skill tree, for those wishing to have a warrior party and having some ranged damage. Similarly a warrior with the right skill should be able to smash locks and doors, so that a rogue is not always needed within a party build.
- Without needing a mage in the party, warriors shouldn't have to miss out on one of the game's most useful spells, namely Barrier, templars should be able to cast their own form of it.
- Please raise the level cap and xp gain substantially late game, a player should be able to max out at least three different skill tree branches with each character.
- The inquisitor should be able to seamlessly move around all groups of talking people instead of having some programmed as if they were a brick wall you can slide off of, they should move out of the way of the most important person on Thedas dammit!
- Party size should be increased to a maximum of 5. Having a smaller party should generate more XP depending on how many characters are taking part in a mission (if solo, XP gain should be massive). Inquisitor shouldn't need to be included in party selection for certain missions either.
- I tried out multiplayer, and had to mute some guy who seemingly could only use expletives as every second word and persistently kept telling everyone how high he was: I don't think in-game chat in multiplayer should be enabled at all, people should get by using the F1 to F10 standards such as thanks, over here, retreat, etc. I hypothesise one of the reasons Hearthstone is doing so well is that players virtually can't interact or write to each other with the exception of a few in-game generated responses.
- There should be more than one reminder that an operation is completed, perhaps 2 reminders spaced 5 minutes apart coupled with a soft ping alert.
- There should absolutely not be an option to buy items in multiplayer using in game currency bought from real currency, this cheapens the game and defeats the point of grinding for new gear, we all payed for the game, that's enough, integrity is worth more. As a hypocritical aside I bought the deluxe addition and was thankful for the better weapons and especially appreciate when later game even better schematics arrived. These should be able to be used by any player in the character's party and I thought there should be a tier 4 set of schematics sent through just before the player embarks on the final storyline quest.
- Exploration skills tree: each companion has three possible skills that can help when exploring. Examples - Varric has an 'increased gold find' skill from his connections to the merchants guild, Rogues have a skill which alows them to jump higher than other classes due to their natural agility, Mages have a 'soft landing / levitation' skill that prevents them from taking damage when falling from heights into accessible areas.
- In the Undercroft, overseen by Dagna, there is an area where minerals that have been found are able to be cultivated in a small alcove, the garden equivalent for minerals. These should perhaps take double the length of time it takes to grow herbs.
- The players party can go on certain operations that are 5/10/15 minute mini-missions on small maps in single player.
- Expand on the Inquisitor skill tree unique to the player.
- Sometimes I just want to play single player, offline. The game should be able to launch without Origin and only use local data should the player choose this option. Even having to open Origin in offline mode is a pointless exercise.
- I was going to suggest you launch an app for mobile devices but subsequently read that you plan to - why so multiplayer focused though: what if the app could allow you to select a character and craft weapons and armour as well as saving them to your single player game, or even access the war council remotely for operations.
- Normal mode is much too easy - killing a Dragon for example basically just meant I needed to stand near it while the AI of my three party members dealt with it, normal is practically casual if your party members have level-relevant gear.
- There should be an encounter where you come across a full scale war with hundreds of enemies and friendly AI.
- Do passives from the same class within the same party stack? IE. Having two Templars in the party build for example... this should be clarified.
- No real repercussion to the party for the traitor companion revealed at the end of the story, other than you can't use this companion after the story ends?
- There should be three mini storylines unlocked after the main storyline ends, unlockable using power, which seemingly has no use after the main story ends, which is a pity. I have 30 power left over that I want to use for something.
- In the war council all companions should be present, giving opinions and this should be the central hub where you can access all companions and all advisers in one central location for conversation purposes, as much as I like running miles to view each companion's bedroom within the massive Skyhold.
- Josephine became my male elf inquisitor's romance interest, mainly because ironically the aristocratic noblewoman was the easiest to win over. I had to check that the parental control options weren't enabled after all available interactions with her. I can't believe the culmination of all of the effort to woo her over was a cut scene where she was fully clothed! For older players, we can handle a bit of dirty talk and nudity, which should be the outcome of winning over any potential romance. For the kids, sure, enable parental guidance settings as default - but for the rest of us, we want to move over to the bed and have it highlighted with the "summon shag" option available
a temporary stats boost for 10 minutes after getting laid would be nice too, please and thank you.
-
Sutherland eventually should become a companion, with a new class being presented, perhaps calling his skill tree "from nothing". It would be nice if a few NPCs could eventually become companions through various upgrade quests to unlock them, classes that are unique to these NPCs that a player cannot become. Perhaps borrowed from multiplayer?
- Combat seems chaotic and random most of the time, would love options to enable my rogue to auto-engage magic users, my tank to be able to tank the enemy with the highest HP, etc. Basically more real-time combat customisation
- The 'v' key should be a shortcut key to 'loot all'. Edit: I subsequently discovered that it's actually the spacebar key... well-played EA.
Bugs / glitches:
I have been reading up on the many bugs and glitches a lot of people have been dealing with and thankfully have had relatively few. I think players also need to be understanding of a new game developed for a benchmark and that there might be compatibility issues when running on the thousands of possible combinations of PC specifications out there. I do hope you sort these out as soon as possible though.
- At times, when using the war council, the mouse won't work in certain selections, requiring the player to select using keys only, unless unlocking this screen with a right click first, please fix this.
- I had a glitch where my main character would not move, companions could move but my character couldn't, this might have to do with still being locked in a conversation when 'leave conversation' was selected.
- After combat, spell effects still linger such as mage elemental blasts or rogue spinning daggers.
- It's happened to me at least 10 times so far: the game just quits completely within a second, no saving, nothing. It just ended its the game process of its own accord. Thank goodness for autosave.
- Little to no party banter.
- Characters being recognised as the wrong race or gender.
- Enemy AI not moving when attacked, and being clumsy in general, never trying to flank or outmaneuver your party.
New Content:
I know a major bragging point of the game so far has been how massive it is. However, after finishing the main story and a substantial portion of the side quests I feel as if the content of the game needs to be doubled, I'm not just exaggerating for effect here. How about flying mounts to access new lands such as a Sky Fortress in the clouds. Or to be able to travel to the depths of The Deep Roads, to strike at the very heart of the Darkspawn once and for all. A dream forest in the fade. A volcanic island where it's raining ash. A series of islands that the party needs rowboats to access different parts. Huge glacial frost caverns. A mountainous Dwarven fortress where protective golems and siege weapons can be activated to help stop an incoming assault of the armies of the spider queen. With your new engine the possibilities seem endless. Once I had scouted all of the in game maps I felt a bit empty, as they lacked substantial content, just the same old quests dressed up in different ways.
How about more monster variants. When you attack a group of skeletons there should be a necromancer with them, huge warriors skeletons, Lich Mages, etc. Not just archers and swordsman undead. Similarly groups of spirits could be different sizes and colours reflecting their health and type of elemental damage respectively. I'd like to see at least a minimum of fifty more monster variations and entirely new types. I found groups of monsters usually too few and little challenge for four hardy adventurers, mob sizes could be increased too.
How about new specializations. A Dwarven Mage (yes you heard that right) : The Rune Master, without directly practicing magic this character could provide incredible party buffs and healing. A Steel Fortress warrior whose armour rating directly influences damage and plays a bodyguard role. An arcane archer who is more tactical and support in nature than DPS with arrows that benefit the party (flares for better party damage output due to increased visibility of enemy vulnerabilities) and arrows that can cripple and hamstring (perma-slow) enemies. Maybe I'm just a dreamer.

My apologies if anything I listed here is inaccurate and has already been addressed. I'm sure some of these ideas were thrown around by the development team and shelved, perhaps some for good reason. Some of the above suggestions must be relevant though, I find it hard to believe that these were overlooked by a massive development team.
A few last thoughts. Many are lauding the writing quality of the game. In fact the characters are two dimensional and their personality traits boringly predictable. Once I had one chat with each companion I had already discerned which responses they would like and dislike for the rest of the game, they were too easy to figure out and lacked depth. The writing quality of the dialogue could use work too, it's usually rather inane and not written for the intelligent, rather just for a mass market. Particularly the fact that the word "grandstanding" made it into the game, incredulously more than once, is absurd and entirely out of place. If you believe that's good writing you should read more books: perhaps I'm being overly critical though as I'm an English Literature major and English teacher. I felt there could be much more intrigue and subtlety to the characters. Cole was perhaps the only exception to this. I would also like an option, at time of install, to have all language displayed in UK English. I am not English by nationality but this is the type of English I use and prefer.
The voice acting overall was good, especially Freddy Prinze Junior's job with The Iron Bull. Pity the dialogue was substandard, I think RPG players are more demanding than most. That being said, I was also bogged down by a ridiculous amount of story, I just wanted to get back to the action most times when everyone was jabbering away whilst demons roamed the lands unchecked. Character interactions should be much briefer and more poignant, requiring players limited time to make unique responses, as in real life, before a default response is selected. The character of Sera was so annoying in fact that even though I wanted an Elven Rogue in my party I refused to use her. Please rewrite her entirely and subject the employee responsible to putting forward that it was a good idea to put her in the game to a disciplinary hearing. She is not cute or endearing in her own special way, she is just plain annoying in every way. Feel free to disagree with any or all of these points, as long as you provide justification. I know at times I'm being highly subjective with some of my points, but I'm naturally a bit cheeky, and some of that tongue-in-cheek tone as filtered through into this post, for that you have my profuse apologies. Actually, not really. See what I did there.
In case you were wondering, I played the game on normal difficulty with my Inquisitor being a Mage Knight Enchanter, hoping to be a healer which sadly wasn't possible. I had The Iron Bull as a DPS tank (Reaver/tank build), Solas in a support role (Spirit and Rift Mage skill trees) and my DPS archer had to be Cole (Sera is horrifying) using the Assassin, Stealth and Archery skill trees. Once I had these party members unlocked my party build never changed where possible. Even though I want to slay all of the dragons and complete every quest I will be waiting for the new patch before doing this. The game was much too easy so I'l be playing on Hard or Nightmare mode and plan to make an all warrior party with my Inquisitor being a Qunari Templar - as well as having Cassandra, Blackwall and The Iron Bull in the party with their various specializations, except that the Iron Bull will be a Two Hander Reaver DPS build and Blackwall will be the tank as he is more suited to this role (sword and shield, champion and tank skill trees). As amazing as this game is I reiterate that I'll only be replaying it properly once a substantial 1.1 patch is released, in the meantime I'll just have to move onto another title.
I just hope these suggestions make it to the head honcho and development team. I think the next patch should be massive and make a lot of these additions right at the onset of the game's launch. I think the new patch is needed soon too, within the next few weeks. If you want to keep players satisfied and continuously playing this game there should be three to four major patches each year with a lot of new content and fixes. No paying for insubstantial DLCs, players have already purchased the game and are supporting your company, this entitles them to a lot more free content, ideally doubling the size of the game in effect, within the next few weeks, not months. You should be on the ball with this and not sleeping, that's what coffee is for. Otherwise there's another title being released in January that might just give you a massive kick in the arse if you don't address these concerns with all possible haste. I hope this was informative and thank you for reading. Please feel free to offer me a job EA Bioware, even if it's just as a play tester. I can have the DA4 character scripts ready for you too, just give me three days notice.
Thanks for the great game
Sincerely,
Dan
