Hi all,

This is my second time through the game, it's been 4 years since I played it last.  This time I'm rolling a human female rogue and I keep freaking dying.  I don't remember dying this often when I had my male elf mage.  My question is; aside from editing the save file - how can I keep my party alive longer?  Even fighting the bandits in Lothering I'm dying freaking fast.  There's no real grinding in this game and even potions and money is limited.

How the frak am I supposed to stay alive?!

Changing your party's tactics will help. Equipping them correctly will as well

Set Alistair to attack. When Shield Wall becomes available, set that to be always on. Set him to taunt when that becomes available. Set Morrigan to keep your weapons frosty. Morrigan is a very good debuffer out of the box. Set her to hex any elite mobs. Set Dog to attack by rank, elite first, then minions and flunkies.

As a rogue, you should wait a second or two until the bad guys are attacking Alistair. Then circle around and attack them from the rear. This maximizes your damage (backstabs galore!) and minimizes the hits you will take. Take out the minions first, then pile on the boss.

For the companions you pick up in Lothering, set Leliana for ranged combat. Sten comes prefigured to tank, so change that. He should not taunt.

As for the post Lothering companions, use Oghren as an off tank, Wynne as a healer, and Shale as a primary tank in lieu of Alistair if you do not want to use Alistair for some reason. Zevran is useful as a damage dealer and love interest. :)

I'm just playing on normal.  I can't believe I'm dying this much.

As Mousestalker said, reset your tactics.

- Have Alistair tank for you, have him attack anyone who's attacking you (using Shield Bash, for example). Let him start fights, hold back until they're attacking him.

- Since you don't have Wynne yet, give Morrigan the healing spell, have her cast it on allies <50% health.

- As a rogue, be sure to stand behind your targets for maximum efficiency, and don't hesitate to use your special attacks (dirty fighting, e.g.).

- Also, if you have the feeling you're running out of healing potions, spec one of your companions into herbalism and craft them yourself - there's enough elfroots around to satisfy your needs.

- As a rogue, feel free to spec into traps, especially the ones that root your enemies.

- Focus fire! See to it that at least 3 people are attacking the same target. Kill the adds before you kill the boss.

I know what you mean. I completely underestimated tactics, the combination of certain abilities & spells, and the use of poisons and traps. You are really gimping yourself if you don't use them! It took me quite some time to understand that, but at least I can look back and laugh at myself now. :3

Indeed!! I'm so used to being a mage that actually fighting with a different strategy is difficult for me.  This time around I'm becoming more familiar with the tactics system and all the other bells and whistles I didn't use 4 years ago.  Granted - I've had more experience with RPG games and strategy now since then so I'm more familiar with the interface than I was back then.  But I couldn't believe how many times I died last night.  I almost always play as a mage in every game, but since I've already done that I wanted to try something different.

Thanks for all the tips, I'm looking forward to getting on tonight! :)

And then... one more month and I'm allowed to buy Dragon Age: Inquisition if I don't get it for Christmas. LOL

In tactics set allistair to defender/aggressive set morrigan and Leliana to ranged

If you are using sten set him to scrapper /aggressive

Pause at the beginning of every fight and make sure that your controlled character is not getting plinked by archers always assist allistair get riposte and coupe de grace ASAP

you gotta have a tank, for sure playing as a rogue. You cannot rush in, and you are very vulnerable early in the game (later you are nearly a tank, after you take the evasion and combat movement perks and such). Allistair needs taunt asap, and then you should be good, although he will need healing spells or potions until he can get shield wall and such.

Also, it may be a bit of a crutch, but winter grasp and cone of cold are hugely helpful. Get mind blast early too, and have morrigan run in and hit them with that. Use pause a lot, as someone else said. Dirty fighting helps a lot.

Dual rogue is the most run and powerful class in DAO, imo, but early on it is probably the most difficult to play.

I never get taunt only threaten and my tanks can always hold aggro. It's usually like one of the last things I get. I go for all the shield talents and the top row of warrior talents first. I also always run champion on the shield tanks but if you don't respec alligator can't get that till level 14 still a ways out.

Apart from tactics, the pause button (space bar) is your greatest friend.

Go to pause, look carefully at who or what is around you and your team. Think about where you want to place people - if you've a rogue, you might want to stand him off with a bow at a distance, wait until your tak has attracted attention, and then (not before) fire in your arrows. Once your tank and your arrows have softened up the opposition, close in, switch to blades, get behind the target and backstab - rinse and repeat making good use of abilities like dirty tactics etc. Don't be afraid to  run away and let your tank collect the aggro before returning.

Using a longbow, move to a range where you see the sword over an enemy but not the name. If you shoot from that range, you will only pull that enemy and not the rest of the group. There's all that wide open space in Lothering, so you can do this for pretty much every group, except the gang of peasants that jumps you.

It's sort of cheating, but hey, it's Lothering, and you haven't had a chance to put a good build together yet.

Edit: Oh wow this thread is old :( Still works, though.
