Banal nadas.

More than anything I want an "earn your happy ending". Like Witch Hunt, but more. What I love about Bioware games are the choices. I have a Warden, for example, who romanced Alistair and took the final blow because she couldn't bear to put him through the Dark Ritual. But then I also had a Warden who stayed with Alistair in the end. I have a DA2 "maximum tragedy Hawke", who loses her whole family, romances Anders, and executes him at the end because she believes there's nothing there left to save. I don't dislike tragic stories. But I'm not wild about inevitable tragedy.

Yes, I agree.

There was no way to wrap up the relationship between Solas/ Lavellan within this game. Because of their circumstances, he had to leave, and she had to stay. There was really no other way for it to end. But in a DLC, their circumstances could change, and I don't see why we couldn't end up with a (relatively) happy ending for these two, depending on our choices.

Is there somewhere online where you can see all versions of the cards?

That was my take. White wolf for an Inquisitor that befriends him, black wolf for an Inquisitor that is an enemy. Sort of a redemption/destruction. Which also plays into the meaning of the two tarot cards.

I am no expert, so I have copied from a tarot explanation site. Someone better suited can clarify. But essentially, the tower demands change, while the heirophant encourages someone to stay the course.

White wolf=Hierophant;

The Hierophant can also represent group activities and beliefs, and in either case, support of the establishment and respect for the rules are emphasized. So if you are planning something revolutionary, the repeated appearance of the Hierophant is a good sign to forget such action and go with the flow for the time being. The traditional way of doing things must work most of the time, or else it wouldn't have been around long enough to become tradition! However, when an idea is proven wrong it is certainly time for a change. The true Hierophant is one who has a deep respect for his beliefs, but who will not blindly follow them to his own ruin.

Black wolf=Tower;

Sometimes, when accepted and welcomed, divine wisdom and enlightenment flow freely like a calm river. The rest of the time, wisdom is blocked until it rages forth like a tidal wave and crushes anything in its path, including the recipient of the wisdom. This is the energy of the Tower card, an energy very similar to Death in that it is both a destructive and a creative force. When a building is old and decrepit, it must be demolished so that a new structure may stand in its place. The same is true of the symbolic Tower. When old attitudes and beliefs are outdated, you will have to let go of them, whether you like it or not.

The last thing Solas said to Lavallen, in my play through, was
"no matter what happens, just know that what we had was real."
Then, as everyone was walking up, Solas was standing up behind me,
everyone was like... You survived... Blah blah... Then pan back.... Solas was no longer there...

If this does not scream, MORE!
I don't know what does.

I say, Solas has to let go of Pride, that's his battle, right?
He tries to do right, but fails.
In his journey, however, he meets Lavellen and that changes everything!
Meaning, it all can be real... Right?
How do you make it real?
Lavellen has to make it real, how?
Well, if Solas is the Wolf (Dread/White) and he has fallen for Lavellen, who has shown
That she is no simple elf (maybe the divines did bestow her power or just her love alone) but, his pride is in the way.
He Must use the power from Mythal to care for the people, to let go of Pride and serve.
Once he learns that he must let go of pride (with Coles help, as Cole realized he could but never answered as his thoughts were redirected) the White (love) wolf emerges...
Or if you go Dread Wolf the Pride consumes him...

So, if you go White wolf, Solas can walk out of the Fade/beyond and build the better world with Lavellen as they become the figureheads of the elven return (aka divines/gods as we learned are merely titles for those who have a grander journey).
Which would be so awesome In future DA to see your old character as a divine/God in statues and stories, the two wolves, Solas and lavellen )
If you go Dread Wolf, Solas will become the "enemy" who continues the elven outlash against the gods and man??

Am I making sense? Lol I don't even know...
But, I do know.... This could be the most romantic story in elven history or the most terrifying one!
Good or bad, love or hate... Change is enevitable!

How insane? What a character!
Solas could be the great leader of elven rebirth or he could be the great enemy.
White wolf or Dread Wolf.... Who do you feed?

**realizes how obsessive I have become** <SIGH>
Singing.... ***I don't want to wait for our lives to be over,
I want to know right now, what will it be?
I don't want to wait for our lives to be over,
Will it be yes or will it be...sorry?***

I definitely believe that they are planning to continue his story. I just really really hope that it is with the current inquisitor!

(btw spoilers below for the very very end of the story, so if you havent completed the very last mission then -beware- )

Here are some things I have observed:

at the end when my inquisitor spoke with Leliana about him, she said something along the lines of "he might have left because he had no choice, he might turn up at any moment", with my inquisitor giving a hopeful "maybe", this sounds like foreshadowing for his return in some way?

he even states at the end while standing at the top of the steps that "what we had was real"

I would have taken that as the final blow to the relationship, considering he is referring to it in the past tense now...but at least he says that he was staying true to it while it lasted. That now he needs to right some wrongs or take care of matters in order to not hurt the inquisitor even more.

YET i am still REALLY hopeful for the relationship considering Bioware has done something like the Witch Hunt DLC before...maybe, just like throughout the entire romance, the inquisitor will keep pushing her affections, and pushing, until he accepts his happiness. After all his main fear in life is "dying alone", an obvious boon to the romanced characters right there.

as a side note, i personally believe that he is not a vessel, and that he is the real deal--the wolf. in earlier conversations he mentions how the ancient elven race was actually immortal, which makes sense considering that the elves we met in the temple of mythal seemed to also be immortal. Those elves said that the inquisitor had awoken them from their slumber, and at the very end, solas mentions being too weak to open the orb himself after his own slumber.

linking this back to the idea that the gods in this world are actually legends turned to the idea of gods aka likely powerful people that had done incredible things. when you think about it, i wonder if our own inquisitor will be seen as a god by the people, thousands of years into the future? considering they were hailed as the herald of andraste on top of it all?

anyway, hopefully that all made sense, i just finished a playthrough with a solas romance and this thread was a great read to help me with...being such a fangirl for solas

BIOWARE. Closure. Please?  :(

Alright. So, first of all, +1 for getting new content (DLC or future game).

I don't even care if Solas returns as a villain or as a companion (well, I do care, obviously - or I wouldn't have focused on this topic :) - but not enough to cry "I won't be buying anything unless X or Y happens") as long as we DO get more content.

Spoiler

Putting the revelation separately just screams "We want to develop this plot at some point, if enough interest is shown". And damn it, interest is being shown! XD

I'm even one of the players who are finding it hard to start any of the other romances, even though there are so many available for female characters. :( I keep getting stuck on the point of depth...

Spoiler

Granted, there are very few ways I can see this having a happy ending... But a very determined Inquisitor might make it happen.

Solas himself says he does not believe in the old gods. I think they were just powerful people who became legend when they were locked away, and legend became misconstrued. I definitely think that Solas, Fen'Harel, whatever you want to call him, was instrumental, if not the cause of the "old gods" being locked away. As to why he feels so guilty about it, since they seemed to cause so many problems for him to deceive them in the first place, I cannot say.

I definitely thought about this when my inquis was making her decision at the well of sorrows. I wish I knew what happened to Flemeth at the end though, did she die? Was she killed? Did she willingly pass on to the dread wolf? Questions that I hope they answer in the DLC. In addition, of course, to giving us the option to rekindle our Solas relationships :)

I really hope that every BioWare dev who is working on a continuation has a giant poster that says "Banal nadas." in their office.

"Nothing is inevitable."

I was enraged at the railroading in the Solas romance and it made me shut the game off for three days, fully convinced that BioWare has yet to learn that player choice is what fans love about these games.

However, I can accept that the story is simply not finished, as long as it is not continued with further railroading.  BioWare, please don't Tallis up any further DLC or expansions.  We've had more than enough of that nonsense.

And, no, that doesn't mean having a choice between tragic ending #1 or tragic ending #2.  I know a lot of people raged about Anders in DA2, but I think they way they handled him in the end was great for player agency.

Despite the limited content, Solas' romance made the game for me.  I found the main quest's ending to be entirely lackluster and boring, and there were a number of other things I was very disappointed in such as the Orlesian ball, which I had been looking forward to ever since DAI was announced.  But Solas made all of these "issues" obsolete because his reveal and relationship with Lavellan changed the nature of the game.  He was so much more than he appeared to be, and I swear I never would've thought I'd prefer him to all other romance options.  I cried a little the second time I watched his first kiss with Lavellan, and I think it was because he seemed so much like he wanted this happiness, but couldn't have it.  Then the final romance scene... I rushed through the remaining main quest just on the chance that I would find out something more so my Lavellan could have closure or another chance... and I ended up crying for a full 20-30 minutes, no kidding.  But I loved it.

Solas had so little content compared to the other characters, not just romantically, but as a Lavellan who romances him you see more to him than other Inquisitors, and I feel it's something you need to see/experience in order to understand him and his motivations, or at the very least make them more meaningful.  Even though I would've loved so much more content during the romance (such as Lavellan taking Solas to meet her clan or Solas taking her on a Fade date), I think what hurt most was absolutely no reaction from anyone at the end, especially Lavellan herself.  So I'm all for a DLC or expansion pack dedicated to Solas.  There was no closure, only a barely glimpse of hope.  I don't think a happy ending is possible for them, but I want a decent ending where they can at least be together.

Solas himself always says "it's more complicated than that".  Honestly, the dude is a master manipulator and narcissist.  He values spirits over flesh and blood people who are suffering due to his actions in the past.  "His people" need him -- he's not talking about the common elves, he's talking about his god friends.

Sure, he doesn't like slavery.  Sure, he doesn't like violence.  That doesn't mean he's a good guy.  You can't just throw out all the old legends of ruthless and cunning Fen'Harel.

You must not have paid much attention to the lore, etc.

The modern elves think Fen'Harel was a trickster and a traitor, but in Masked Empire, Felassan tells of a different Fen'Harel.  Then toward the end of DAI, we learn that Fen'Harel translates less to "dread wolf" and more "rebel wolf."  He's the god of rebellion.  Going by dialogue clues, I'm guessing he tried to end slavery and make things better for all the elves.  Instead he wakes up and finds things far worse.

As for him possessing a human, as others have suggested?  Fen'Harel claims that he had been sleeping until he was wakened by the Inquisitor (presumably when she's marked by his orb).  My suspicion is that he'd been sealed away, as opposed to sealing away the other gods, and then went about the business of trashing his reputation.

Here's the thing:  Solas may like spirits well enough, but I had him in my party the entire game.  He gained approval whenever I helped elves, and sometimes humans, in the random side quests.  And the last thing he says is that he still has people to help.  Well, I think he is genuine in that desire, though the other gods may twist that desire.  And, if he's the god of rebellion, as opposed to just some random trickster god, that may not end well despite his best wishes.  But Solas himself doesn't believe himself a god.

Speaking of which!  As far as arrogance is concerned, I think he chose the name "Pride" for a reason.  Because he thinks he was far too proud in the past, thinking he could change things--when he failed.

But yes, OP, I'd LOVE some resolution to Solas's romance.  Even if it's heartwrenching and forces a true end to the relationship--Solas did love Lavellan (he wants to make sure she knows it--it's the last thing he tells her, that he wants her to know that what was between them was real).  He just knew it was a horrible idea to continue in the relationship considering his personal goals, and he tried very hard to tell the Inquisitor that without outright saying it.  So, manipulative?  I don't really think so.  Dishonest?  Yes, but do you think a Dalish elf would have welcomed Fen'Harel into her inner circle with open arms?

I also wonder if he wouldn't have explained things if he'd gotten the orb.  Perhaps he meant to also ensure he got to be with Lavellan if he had succeeded?  He did promise to explain, but then he also likely expected success.  But we can't know that, now, unless we get a DLC where he explains so.

I also believe that Solas the elf has been willingly possessed by the spirit of Fen'Harel, as the young woman Flemeth was with Mythal.

He asks the Inquisitor if something changed in her spirit when she was in the fade.  I believe he's digging to see if she was possessed as well, because he can't imagine being interested in  a plain old elf. :-)

Im still formulating the first mentioned (I thought maybe the trickster spirit to be Sera..)
The Forgotten Boy spirit is Cole.
They both work with the Wolf.

I thought of this when reading the book found in the lil cave, right by the two elven archers when you
First get to the Exalted Plains and head for the Dalish camp.

There is for sure something huge going on.

Lavellan changes everything, because she proves that a mortal can survive the Fade, physically.
This means a lot to getting the elven gods and people back together.

And for the naysayers. Andraste was a mortal woman, who became the Makers wife.
She was called to his side, but her mortal husband killed her out of jealousy.

I agree with everything you wrote. I'm sad that after seeing the other romances Solas had so little but the ending made up for it in terms of the story and where it could go. I hope we do get some answers in the future at least.

Solas made the game for me too, it completely changed everything once it got going. All that tedious Herald of Andraste thing? Solas swept it all away and did give me a motivation to keep going when he puts some perspective on the whole thing for my dalish before he revealed Skyhold.

My Lavellan didn't do any of it for the Chantry, her advisors or the chantry priestess who seem to almost force the role of Savior on my elf regardless of what she said/did but she did do it for her people and the world and Solas put some different perspective on that. His romance content might also be short but the fade kiss/scene and the vallaslin/blood writing scene made the entire game worth playing. I'm just sad there was not at least a longer follow up scene on it. I would not have minded a sad ending where Solas left, I would not even minded if it was a full breakup but I wanted a slightly longer conversation about it. Still I don't think I could ever play the game and not do the Solas romance, every other character pales in comparison.

I kept hoping he would show up one final time in Skyhold before the Flemeth scene but sadly not. :(
Oh well I'm not surprised there was no reaction from anyone over Solas leaving though. A few of the companions act like real friends but the advisors can't even grasp that someone don't care as much about the chantry as they do.

Josephine is the worst of the lot in some ways, although she actually ask about the dalish she still say something like "They must understand you move in different cycles now" if told the dalish people might not care about a dalish being the Herald of Andraste.

I wanna track that wolf down, he's kinda like Anders not wanting to implicate Hawke in his plans, but if he actually explained to my Lavellan she'd have been down with it, helping The People is what she does, she'd want to help him regardless of potential consequences. Plus I saw her magically overpower Corypheus and casually kill him, she's essentially a god already as far as I'm concerned.

Plus dat sweet sweet 50+ % ranged defense, shrugging off dragon fireballs like a boss :P
