I have been running around the Hinterlands trying to collect all the magical shards, about the last quest I have to do in that area and one shard is just not reachable unless there is some kind of flying spell I don't know about. It is in the valley with the dragonlings. The shard is sitting on top of this basalt formation and I cannot find anyway to jump up there.

Also, how the hell are you supposed to beat that bloody dragon? I went in there to try out my first dragon and within 30 seconds decided we needed to get the hell out of there. (normal difficulty) The Inquisitor was the only party member able to successfully extract with just a sliver of health, no potions and half a barrier. The other party members all were dead. And this was in the first 30 seconds. (level 11)

There is a way to jump there, just keep trying to jump on those basalt "steps". For the dragon you need to level up a bit more.

Yeah, like MasterSolo said, you have to jump up the basalt steps to get to that shard. It's a bit annoying, but it's definitely possible.

Killing the dragon, on the other hand, would be nearly impossible at level 11... At least, if you play on hard like I do.

I dunno, maybe you could do it with the right team, but I went in at level 13 with Cassandra, Iron Bull, and Dorian (my Inquisitor is a mage, too) and spent AN HOUR AND A HALF trying to wiggle the dragon's health down... I pretty much played entirely in tactical mode but I STILL died. I actually let out an infuriating bellow that probably woke the neighbors.
I realized it was most likely due to the fact that I was using a fire staff and had my mage specced with fire spells (worthless).

I switched up my party and choose the ice queen (Vivienne) and frosty Solas and respecced my character for ice spells and we wrecked the dragon in about 20 minutes. Constant barrier spam felt cheap, but the fact that the dragon spawns dragonlings during the fight is cheap, so I didn't feel bad :P

I will try it, but I am appalled at such a crappy way of implementing "exploring." Skyrim wasn't even this bad. (of course, in Skyrim you could run sideways across the face of a cliff. kind of like mako driving.)

And BW boss fights are generally cheap. Hoppy Toad Saren was especially cheap, so everyone just spammed Lift on him.

Hi guys,

I just killed the dragon with just Solas and I'm lvl13. I did a lot of trial and error and I came with this strategy:

1.rely on a mage. This time I chose Solas.

2. when you're just about to exit that basalt tunnel at Dusklight Camp, the dragon activates itself and start circling the area around. Stay near the tunnel exit so you have a backup path just in case the dragon spits fire on you. At one point (about 5 minutes) the dragon gets bored and flies off to Blood Cliffs (the area straight ahead Lady Shayna's Valley).

3. as soon as the dragon flies off, charge straight on to Lady Shayna's Valley and kill all the Dragonlings that stay between you and  the Blood Cliffs (I had to kill 4). Try and protect your mage so he/she doesn't have to use his healing potions,

4. When you get to the tunnel before Blood Cliffs, you will see the dragon on the ground. Take Solas and enter Blood Cliffs on the left side (go through the creek, focusing on trying to reach the top of the hill/basalt mountain in front of you).  As soon as you get out of the creek with Solas (the party members can die meanwhile, it's not important), you will see a sort of path that leads up the basalt hill. Climb it until you get have to go left on a curved path. Go up.

5. When you face the dragon, you will have a scorched tree in front of you and a pile of basalt rocks. That is where you start attacking the dragon. Don't move too much towards the dragon/edge of the hill because when it kills all your party members, it will focus on you. Stay back and watch the trajectory of the fire spits. The tree will be destroyed soon and so will most of the basalt rocks on your feet but important thing is don't get too close to the edge of the hill. I blasted the mother funker for over 20 minutes with Solas (mostly Energy Barrage and Chain Lighting).

6. At half of life, the dragon will start squeaking a noise that will stun you. Watch where you are in relation to the edge of the hill all the time because if you sit too close and the dragon starts waving his wings, he will manage to pull you in. It's sad when you die and the dragon is at half HP :/ and you know it's totally doable but you just lost focus for a second.

7. At 10% HP, the dragon gets smart and flies off to where you are. It will land on top of the hill, like 2 inches away from where you stand so go down the curved path for 5-10 steps until all there is between you and the dragon is a wall "reinforced" with basalt.

8. Continue to blast it with Energy Barrage and Chain Lighting until it dies but do not move from where you are. Even if you don't have the dragon in your sight, it's better to hug the basalt wall and not get pulled inside the little tornado the dragon makes with his wings.

9. Collect underpants a.k.a loot the sinner!!! The loot is nice, I got a dagger, a staff and an awesome belt plus some mats.

10. Gloat! :D

okay, I spent about a half hour still trying to get that shard last night. My char keeps falling off once she gets to a certain point up the pillars. I had a headache and quit trying :(

I'll send one of you my save game, you can do it for me and then send my save back to me??? :P LOL

You can get it through platforming.

Though I don't think Bioware was thinking when they made it only attainable through platforming in a game with a jumping system that isn't suited for platforming.

Believe me, I know your pain and frustration. I tried to get it on my first run and it took me 40 minutes at least, due to the fact that as I was nearing it the game randomly sent me flying about 30 feet in the other direction.

Also for the Dragon the Fereldan Frostback is a pain at Level 11/12 or lower. But it can be beaten. It's really the only one that's difficult to beat. The others are easy and tedious.

Anecdotally, the shard is easier to get with a human like Cassandra than it is with an elf or dwarf.  Never tried with Iron Bull.  I had the worst time getting that shard with my elf but when I switched Cass she hopped right up there.  Also had no issues getting it with a human male.

It's not hard with an elf, either. I almost enterily play with female elf and have never had any troubles with that shard. Usually takes about 40-50 seconds to get on top of that pillar (latest time was around 45 seconds; I timed it). Same with human male. I never play with a dwarf, so that could be a different thing, though.

Also, if you wait a little before entering the valley with the pillar, the high dragon will move away and return to it's original place at the end of the map, leaving you in peace to collect the shard. I've always done it that way in every playthrough without the need to kill the dragon. A few dragonlings may get too close but those are easy to deal with.

I gave up on a half dozen shards that are unreachable until a Levitation spell comes out. Got enough to open all the Cold and Fire doors, and the first 2 Spirit doors

My conclusion is YES, the Shards quest can not be completed

I had trouble with it until I watched a youtube video and saw it done.  I kill all the dragonlings and the dragon and take off my armor.  I play as a female human or elf so I am slender.  It makes it easier to tell where you are jumping.

I also remove my armor when I am getting some of the shards on the buildings in the Exalted Plains.

PC and with mouse+keyboard. :)

But it's not that hard really (absolutely nothing compared to Tomb Raider games ;)). I do it the same way as this one player does: https://www.youtube....h?v=YvADt28hU_Y

To kill high dragons quickly remember to spec Cole into Mark of Death and Sera into Thousand Cuts (you should be able to have these 2 at least by the time you are lvl 13). Combining those 2 skills you can quickly kill any dragon in the game. The Hintherlands dragon is only lvl 12 so at lvl 13 or 14 it should already be rather easy.

Here you have the instructions to do it (in this video, a lvl 18 party kills a lvl 17 dragon in a couple of minutes):

killing that dragon to get the shard isn't necessary. If you go down towards it's end of the valley first it will fly back there and land and stay back there until you either try to kill it or you leave the area of this particular shard through the cave again.

I would use my Mario skills, if I could use a better controller than the keyboard/mouse. Maybe someone will make a mod that moves that shard within reach for us clumsy players ;)

Even Iron Bull asked how many keys does that temple need to open doors....... Maybe I'll send him up there after it today and see if he can manage to get it.

~~GOT IT!!!! Took my quizzy's armor off and jumped very carefully.. got it first time!!! Thank you @cami46 :D
