So my basic understanding of classes is that warriors are tanks, rogues are dps and mages are crowd control/support. Looking at the stats for bows they all seem to have about half the DPS of their dual dagger equivalent (for level). Is there any advantages in having my rogue companions skilled as archers? Also I haven't tried yet but I see that Varric has a dual daggers tree? I thought he had to use Bianca as his main weapon.

You can make Varric use daggers if you wish.

In theory daggers are higher burst dps but risky.

Bows are more constant dps at range (safe)

However the way the classes have worked, bows are just as good at basic dps for most people (daggers have higher potential but you have to work with it and use moves correctly, bow, you can spam things and be doing good)

It really does help on hard mode + as it will keep your potion consumption down a bit and if you are a melee class they wont get in your way which irritates me a lot.

My tanks are fairly good at keeping the enemy off my dual rogue PC (particularly as he has stealth and low threat skills), so rogues loosing health isn't currently much of an issue.

Upgraded Full Draw on an unhurt enemy (huge bonus damage and puts them to sleep for 20s or something) is a real nice way to open a fight. That and -unlike dagger rogues- they have the advantage of being out of harm's way most of the time. I'm playing a dagger rogue, and getting hit by AOE strikes while stood behind an enemy is kind of a hassle.

That said, I'm happy enough with my dagger quizzy. He probably requires a lot more handholding (I play in tac cam) than an archer would, but it's a satisfying class to play and the damage payoff seems worth it.

I play DW rogue and yea, its not a huge issue to avoid taking damage, but the odd AoE spell or high dragon tail sweep at a bad time can knock you down, and thats a few seconds without a steady stream of damage. Sacrilege.

But normal difficulty or below, it doesn't really matter anyway.

I only use then, when I need a lock picked. Tbh I find Archers entirely superfluous. Rogues in general. Whenever possible I take 2 tanks and 2 mages and roll through mobs.

I just switched from DW to Archer on my Rogue and I could not be happier.

I feel like I am more useful in terms of overall damage. If its two guys and the fight is short then yes the mage or the DW rogue is better for burst.

However if the fight is gonna take time I feel like the sustained damage of the Archer over time plays out better than the mage or DW Rogue.

Ahh. I am playing hard but without friendly fire. I could imagine archer being a lot better if I turned that on.

DPS is only useful for autoattack. Look at damage. That's what powers key off of.
