It is not easy to creep out players controlling a high-level party. Bioware should do more horror.
Dead Space meets Dragon Age?
It was a fun little dungeon, indeed.

Oh, I loved that place so much! I like how you don't get any info on what's happening and you need to piece it all together from the notes spread around the mansion. The note that gave me goosebumps was the one
I randomly stumbled into this place, it was a fun and unexpected journey, haha. I quite enjoy that we can find cool little areas hidden away like this that you don't need to do, but are still proper 'dungeons'.
I really hope that we have more dungeons like this one in the future.
I thought, 'hey, this could be fun, let's take a look!' and within 5 seconds of entering that place I was resisting the urge to nope right back out.
Exactly the same here!
I totally did not expect a haunted mansion.
I did things super quick so that I could get out of there as soon as possible. Though when it came time to go outside and fight the skeletons and boss, it was all business as usual. It was just the inside of the mansion that was scary.
I ran it with Sera, Cass, and Viv last time. Viv's a bit snooty about it, but Sara is terrified. 'Cassandra! Seekers go first, yeah?' when the lights flickered.
A beautiful, if sad, quest. And with the body of the woman who 'fell' to her death because of 'Mother' not that far off, I got freaked out about the demon maybe having escaped... you fought an Arcane Horror, after all, not an Abomination...
So I was just wandering through the Emerald Graves, taking care of some rifts, when I found this lovely vine-covered chateau gate. I thought to myself "Let's see what this pretty place is like!"
OMG! This was a totally unexpected little adventure. I loved it! The atmosphere, the sound effects, it was GREAT! It was so creepy-horror film-like, I loved it!
But once I finished exploring the chateau and got to 'the end', everything happened so fast, it left me with with a ton of questions.
Spoiler
But wow... all in all... this was a HUGE plus for me that pushed me well-into the 'thumbs-up' support for DAI. It was a great return to form for Bioware, the 'feel' of some of their old puzzles and mysteries in RPG's. Kudos guys!
I know right. This is the one side quest that really stood out. I would have loved a cutscene at the end. Maybe finding a blood soaked survivor hiding, so traumatized they can barely speak. Would have really brought it home. It reminded me a little of dealing with Connor in Origins.
Some answers for the OP. At least my take on it all. Yeah, creepy place and for those saying it's out of place in a game like DA, I beg to differ. Isn't the entire point of the game how dangerous magic can be, how some mages can easily be overtaken and controlled by demons because they do not understand or are incapble of warding off that much power? If so, then knowing that a small child who has magical abilities but is certainly incapable of controlling them, would fit completely in with the DA universe and theme.
As for those answers, the child was locked away because his/her (was it a girl or a boy? I forget) frightened the bejesus out of them. Lonely, he/she turned to magic and found a "spirit" who was kind and friendly. This "spirit" was the demon who then entered this world through the child. His/her parents locked her away but continued with their lives and social connections. The party was theirs and the demon crashed it, killing everyone inside the chateau. The demon most likely consumed the young child who would have been powerless to stop it.
I think the real havoc began when the child left to herself with a house filled with guests that she clearly was not allowed to attend for fear of what the others might think or say, invited the demon to come play.
And the box at the end I believe gives +10 Cunning.
I checked on the place again ...and I wonder if the parents seal their child into a freaking box.
No really , you find a letter by the father .He paid some templar and an apostate to do something and he hopes no one will ever know.
At the end we get a arcane horror(a pride demon in a mage corpse) ,so the kid got posessed at some point.
Like BradTorville said , they tried to lock the kid away in a room first .The kid got lonely and a demon noticed her ...then things went creepy real fast.
Then the parents hired a circle mage and a templar and put the possessed kid in the box somehow.
Except the veil was probably already thin with the death and everything and it didn't solve anything.
I really, really enjoyed stumbling upon it during my first playthrough. Was disorientated enough for it to be unsettling. Great atmosphere. Underwhelmed that it was just an Arcane Horror at the end considering I'd run through a ton of them already (thanks to the Exalted Plains + Temple of Dirthamen).
It's not really a quest that bears repetition. Most of what makes it creepy is lost and it becomes pretty run of the mill so it isn't as effective as something like the orphanage in Origins, the 'deserted' Collector ship in ME2 and the like that retain creepy vibes even upon subsequent playthroughs. Knowing where exactly to find the maps kind of takes away the feeling of claustrophobia.
Are there any other places like this?
The Temple of Dirthaman which you unlock on the world map by the runes quest in the Exalted plains is pretty creepy too.
That quest reminded me of the Shadow Hearts series. I only think it could have a more satisfying closure.
I didn't find it that creepy personally.
But then I've long since been inured to this kind of stuff.
Bah, got sick of walking in circles in the dark looking for the key to the balconies, so I skipped it.
Keep in mind that +10 cunning = 5% increase in your crit chance. Its valuable for any class but especially non-rogue classes since it effectively doubles your base crit chance.
What I like about this place besides being so creepy at the end when things start moving faster you just want to get the hell out of there but you are running around like mad finding all the clues with creepies trying to get it. It gets very intense indeed! Loved it!
Sera is a hoot to have with you as well.
Sera has a breakdown every ten feet.
Really? I'm definitely bringing her next time!

This is pretty much what I took away from the journal entries / clues as well, with one addition: a Circle mage had been approached at one point to bind the child's powers. This may have been the last step of a series of trials and errors, since to house contains heaps of "folk remedy" to cure magic. - Dorian has some plenty to say on the topic, if you have him in your party.
I can't go in there unless it's daytime, all the lights are on. It's scares me so much. I wish there was more of that sort of atmosphere in the game. The cube always gives me cunning no matter what class I am.
just came across this gate in my play through. My buddy said this place is long and a little annoying so I'm better of skipping it. I paused and took a break will decide if I venture inside tomorrow
