1. Cassandra & Cole - They are easily my favourites here, in fact probably from any Bioware game I've played. Her integrity, dedication, faith and good heart set such high standards that I was absolutely overjoyed when she turned from being my inspiration to expressing mutual admiration and friendship. His generosity, insight, otherworldliness and unfettered compassion are equal parts awe-inspiring, fascinating and fiercely endearing. Also, I like the way their relationship with each other improves and grows through the game.

These next three are also very close together, with rankings depending on current mood.

3. Solas -  He's personally responsible for my new interest in the Fade and spirits, and while he can be an arrogant hypocrite at times, he's also supportive, thoughtful and open-minded in his way. Plus, he gets along well with Cassandra and especially Cole (I sided with Solas in Cole's mission, predictably).

4. Varric - My "morale officer". Being a strong team player who looks out for and tries to be on friendly terms with pretty much everyone is always a plus in my book, and I also like the fact that he's a writer. We rarely ever see companions with a creative or artistic streak. I get annoyed with his "humans are the best" spiel at times, though.

5. Dorian - He undeniably has an ego and I'll never understand what he values about his cesspit of a homeland, especially after doing his personal mission, but I like his passion, honesty and sense of humor. And damn me if that personal quest wasn't a too-close-to-home emotional gut punch that made me want to give him a rib-crushing hug.

6. Blackwall - As much as I like (and like to play) duty-bound characters, he's a bit too bland and stoic for me, though his personal mission helps. All in all, he's still on the outskirts of the "characters I like" group.

... while these three are not.

7. Iron Bull - He has his tolerable moments, but overall he just annoys the living hell out of me and I never use him.

8. Vivienne - I respect her character, but I could never trust or like her half as far as I could throw a high dragon. Given her arrogance and rudeness to most of the others, I never take her anywhere and just see no place in the Inquisition for her. She'd have been better off as a non-companion Court contact.

9. Sera - The less said about this disappointing waste of a character slot, the better. She's the only one I actively loathe.

My list is as follows (advisors mixed in)

Cullen because he's my main love Interest, his shyness, bashfulness and intelligence is charming

Dorian, he's ador-ian-able

Cole so sweet, he brings out my motherly side.

Cassandra, a good gal pal

The Iron Bull because he's makes a good gal pal too.

Solas

Josephine and Liliana make good gal pals as well

Varric

Vivienne, Sera and Blackwell the three I dislike the most, I am now not recruiting them at all.

It's difficult and I'll try to go on my perceptions of how well they are conceived, written and acted, rather than what my various characters think of them.

1) Cass. Wonderfully done, fully rounded. Even the moments of slapstick work.

2) Sera. The only thing that doesn't work is "Innit". Appalling use of the word that sounds wrong in that accent.

3) Varric. The only good character in DA2 continues to impress.

4) Iron Bull. "Will you look at that? THAT is magnificent".

5) Dorian. Fun and snarky. His banter with Sera great.

6) Vivienne. Is done very well, but I'm not sure many players will get to the heart of her. Some of her banter with the "commoners" is a bit jarring.

7) Solas. I never get much out of him and I've never even seen his personal quest, so I can't really comment.

8) Cole. I feel I'm supposed to have a connection to him from a book I haven't read. His banter doesn't do it for me either.

9) Blackwall. Poor monotone voice acting. Plus a 'twist' that was way over-telegraphed. In my most recent game I can't even be bothered to do his personal quest, or really talk to him much. Not sure why I recruited him

1. Solas - Even with the twist, I think he's my favorite character of the game. He has a lot of depth, is intelligently written and has one of the best voice performances's of the game. It also helps that I agree with most everything he says. Too bad all mages aren't as smart as him.

2. Sera - I really don't understand the hate she gets. She's probably the funnest thing about the game and almost every line she's has leaves me with a smile. Still bummed I couldn't romance her (though maybe not too much, as she was immature in that regard). Along with Solas I almost always included her in my party (unless I was using another rogue for a specific quest).

3. Cassandra - Took me a little while to warm up to her. She was a little too aggressive at the beginning and her religious fervor is somewhat of a turn-off (the main reason why I didn't romance her). Still, she was well-written and I found her straight-forwardness was very appealing to me.

4. Iron Bull - Another character that I didn't care for at first. I really liked the fact that he didn't play games and straight-up told you when you met that he was a spy, but his thirst for blood and cliche he-man personality was grating at times. Still, whenever I wasn't doing a main quest and was focusing on clearing large swathes of enemies, I almost always picked him over Cassandra.

5. Cole - His innocence and lack of guile was one of the things that drew me to him when he was first recruited, but after awhile it just got old. I didn't find him creepy, but his oddness was just a little too odd. It also didn't help that I played as an Assassin rogue, so his skill-set was superfluous. After his introduction it didn't feel like he did too much, either.

6. Vivienne - First and foremost, she's a stuck-up ****** who's always trying to find the best angle for herself. Her totalitarian view was also incredibly irritating. Still, there were a few moments when her guard wasn't up and she was genuinely affectionate.

7. Varric - As Sera said, he's just a little too clever. It always sounded like he was trying too hard to be funny. His one-liners started out annoying and just became pathetic. It certain scene's he had this "poor me" attitude that just rubbed me the wrong way. The actor's delivery also felt off, for whatever reason.

8. Dorian - No matter the story, I absolutely hate narcissistic egomaniacs, so naturally I dislike Dorian. Every time he spoke I was just waiting until he shut up again. It also didn't help that he had a very obvious and tired backstory.

9. Blackwall - When he's first introduced, I found him incredibly boring. His dialogue and voice are flat and uninteresting, and I didn't like how convinced he was that the Grey Wardens could do no wrong or his morally superior attitude. After the reveal and his subsequent excuses, I outright started to hate him. One of few party members that I would not recruit in a second playthrough.

Advisors:

1. Josephine/Leliana - It’s hard for me to pick one over the other (though that might just be bias showing since I romanced Josephine). Each have their separate strengths and are both well acted. The only problems I had were Josey’s obsession with the Game and Leliana’s constant invocation of her faith. I also didn’t understand why there was such a big difference between Leliana’s two possible personality’s. I outright hated her hardened and am so glad I chose to avoid that.

2. Cullen - I really didn’t like him at first. Like the typical military cliche, he has that “kill first, ask questions never” attitude that I despise. His heart’s in the right place and he’s earnest, so over time he eventually grew on me, but I still couldn’t completely like him.

I think the war table missions do all three advisors a disservice at times because the mission choices can make them look like shallow and/or extreme one-trick-ponies, but Cullen seems to be the most common "victim". Then again, nothing beats Leliana's readiness to mutilate someone over a schoolyard spat. *shudder*

Adore  :

1. Sera

Really like:

2. Cassandra
3. Varric

Like;

4. Dorian
5. Solas
6. Iron Bull
7. Blackwall

Indifferent:

8. Cole - Never use him in a party. Dont find him interesting.

Dislike:

9. Vivienne - No...just No! (my dear)
Only reason to recruit her is Seras romance. Can you get Sera her "gift" if you dont have Vivienne around?

When it comes to advisors I would place Leliana on level with Sera (edit: mostly cause DAO). Cullen would go with Cassandra and Varric (but below both) and Josephine would go in the "like" category.

Edit #2: Oh, and Sera is on top even though I disagree with her 2/3 of the time. Nothing wrong with her sentiment, but she goes about it in wrong ways. You cant always put an arrow in people that disagrees with you. She could use a broader perspective...

1. Cole: Very interesting how he expresses himself and gets the companions riled up

2. Solas: You get the feeling he's just a well of knowledge. Interesting to talk to, interesting perspective.

3. Varric: Still a bro.

4. Cassandra: Very head-strong and resolute, while retaining emotion.

5. Dorian: Typical Gaider snark.

6. Blackwall: Bit boring, but gets things done.

7. Vivienne: Unlikable, but she knows it, which I respect.

8. Iron Bull: Extremely dull for such a boisterous character.

9. Sera: Might even be worse than Velanna. Obnoxious, hypocritical and decidedly unfunny chav. The one character I can't squeeze into my team.

1 - Cassandra (May be because she was also in DA2 but I seem to take her along everytime)
2 - Solas
3 - Varric
4 - Blackwall
5 - Iron Bull
6 - Sera (Just like Dorian, annoying personality and too much chatter)
7 - Cole (Too whiny and annoying)
8 - Dorian (His personality and too much chatter is annoying)
9 - Vivienne (Just something about her the way he speaks is annoying, like snobby)

It would've been cool if we were able to take Leliana along. Better her as the rogue than Cole.

I also really enjoyed the dynamic between all three advisors, especially Cullen and Josephine, but was sadly disappointed by Leliana's voice actor. She comes off as stiff and emotionless compared to some of the other voice actors who are giving amazing, nuanced performances. Disappointing, because she was written decently but the VA killed any chance of me liking her.

It's gonna be hard to say much while still eschewing spoilers, but I'll give it a go.  I should note that I did really like the whole cast, outside of my #9, though.

1. Cole.  Wasn't expecting this.  I figured since I hadn't read the book he was in, he'd feel like a halfhearted cameo that I wouldn't really care about one way or another.  Instead, I got a character who was strange and fascinating, alien while still being sympathetic.

2. Blackwall.  A troubled hero, strong of character (probably stronger than he would ever admit).  His personal mission and backstory were extremely moving.

3. Solas.  He fulfilled his role as the chief of exposition, and then some.  I thought it was interesting that his arrogance and standoffishness didn't bug me as much as it does in some other characters.  I'd say it humanized him, but that particular choice of words would probably be met with some of his trademark deadpan (which I also enjoyed).

4. Dorian.  Simply entertaining.  I was a little disappointed that his personal mission was less about his radical political views and made him come off as a sort of "token minority" for being the focus, but the blow was softened a bit by the fact that it was, at the very least, a very emotional scene.

5. Varric.  He already had his moment in the sun in DA2, making him feel like just kind of a tagalong here, but he's Varric.  Practically fun personified, and I still love his anecdotes about writing, so even if he didn't quite feel in place along with the others, I can't hate him.

6. Iron Bull.  I didn't use him much on my first playthrough, so he could potentially do better after I give him a little more time, but I did enjoy him.  He never quite seemed to live up to his potential as a character (though like I said, that might be at least partly my fault), and I think choices like the one at the end of his personal mission are stupid, but he stayed pretty fun regardless.

7. Cassandra.  I kind of regret putting her so low but her accent really bugged me, and as such, I just got annoyed when she talked, making me not want to have her around, and sorta spaced out during her story missions.  I think I would've liked her a lot more if not for this admittedly rather shallow reason.

8. Sera.  I didn't hate her like it seems some people do, but I didn't like her nearly as much as I thought I would, either.  She's entertaining, but her perpetual grumpiness about seemingly everything does get kind of grating at times.  I don't know if it's supposed to be deliberately ironic writing that she comes off as being just as arrogant as the people she hates?

9. Vivienne.  Let's take all of the self-serving arrogance of Morrigan and the "I don't have to follow my own rules because I'm a special snowflake" of Wynne...the worst of both worlds of the Origins mages...and lump them entirely together into a single character.  How was that supposed to not go wrong?

1 - Dorian - funny and sassy. My kind of humor. I always love a man with an ego.

2 - Iron Bull - funny and I love the way he flirts with dorian. It is great. Love the way they bounce off each other.

3 - Varric - funny...sensing a pattern here? I enjoy good humor.

4 - Cassie - because that ****** is so bipolar and her liking varrics books is AWESOME. Love those scenes. So naive sometimes it is funny.

5 - Solas - he's got this charm about him that I dunno I love. Really him and cassie kind of tie for 4th.

6 - Vivienne - Come on you know she's a ******. I love it. She's so snarky that I would put her higher if I could.

7 - Sera - She's so awkward and silly...I dunno it is kind of endearing. Plus some of her flirts are cute. Too bad she hates her own culture.

8 - Blackwall - so boring and all serious about ****. Shut up about the wardens, we get it you want to suck their collective cocks.Though he gets a rank higher than cole because some of his flirts were a little dirty. Came out of nowhere lol.

9 - Cole - meh. I just don't get him as a character, but he's mostly harmless so whatevers.

Honestly, I don't know how anyone can compare the companions. They're all amazingly well written, which equates to being likeable for me, since I enjoy characters for what they are... unlike most people.

I am not surprised Vivienne is the least liked, though I have no idea why she's disliked by the fan-base.

I love all of them. I also can't really compare them because I love their interactions with each other.

Advisors:

1. Leliana

2. Cullen

3. Josephine.

I dislike Josie's "realistic" complexion, plus Cullen gives me that nostalgia feeling. I love all 3 of them too.

The only thing I don't like about the characters is that some of them have realistic skin that puts me off. Just to clarify, I'm OK with realistic skin, it's just that up to a certain point, it bothers me (i.e. skin lesions). I didn't like Cassandra's huge scar on her face, either for that matter.

How I personally feel about companions shift as I role-play different characters, so I'm going to rate based on character development and a bit of my own personal feelings.

  • Cole - Excellent character arc with potential for personal growth. Insightful. Trying to guess at who he was referencing in banters was also fun.
  • Solas - Obviously because of who is REALLY is. Essential to plot. Playing a second time through, all of his comments suddenly take a turn in meaning. I also appreciated his insight and wisdom. I like erudite characters.
  • Dorian - My personal favorite companion, but I wish his character arc wasn't so wrapped up in his sexuality. It wasn't necessary. IB, Sera, and Josie don't have hang-ups about who's bits they like to bang. I think it made Dorian less of a complex character, because there were better opportunities for conflict or crisis Bioware could have explored with his character. Also: Why is it an issue for Dorian to be gay, but it's NOT an issue for Josie? She specifically says she and Blackwall could never be together because of class differences, but a lesbian qunari romance is totally acceptable for nobles?
  • Cassandra - I enjoyed watching her come to terms with the fact that not everything she has been taught about the Chantry and the Seekers is true. She has to incorporate this new knowledge with her belief system, and I think it definitely makes her a better person, more moderate in the end, as evidenced by her actions if she becomes Divine.
  • Blackwall - I think you see more of his personality if you bring him along. I was really taken aback by some of his banter like the one where he asked Solas if he's ever had sex with spirits in the Fade. "Really Blackwall? That's something Sera would ask... oh, you had a conversation with Sera, and that's why you asked." -_- Still, I really like where they took his character--the secret he's hiding.
  • Vivienne - IRL, I would not get along with her. She is arrogant and ambitious, but she can articulate her reasoning with evidence, and is not incoherent like Sera's character. I can respect Vivienne, and where her views come from. I also like how she is very much at odds with most of the cast. It's a nice contrast.
  • Varric - He's become a bit sad and tired from all that's happened, which can be expected, but felt like there were some lost opportunities for... something.
  • Iron Bull - Not enough character development, I think. Yeah, he had to choose between the Chargers and the Qun, but I don't really feel like anything came of it. He's funny though.
  • Scout Harding, everyone else
  • Sera - Poorly written and undeveloped = BORING. My first two playthroughs were with characters that got on fine with her, but I was personally disappointed by her inability to develop as a character. Mentally stunted. Adds nothing to story since she offers no insight into anything. This analysis really says it all:

Advisors:

  • Cullen - Definitely experienced the most character growth, but benefits from being in 3 games
  • Leliana - Was in three games, but hasn't changed much, or shifts too damn much from soft to hardened depending on what you did in DAO
  • Josephine - She's nice, but that's all she really has going for her.

Ok here is my list. I try to talk to everyone when I can even if they are not in active combat with me. I am doing it differently, I am actually grouping my advisors right in with the companions because I feel they have just as much dialogue if not more than the companions.

1. Cullen (he is my elf's romantic interest and some of my fav cut scenes)

2.Cassandra (she is my elf's best friend and also some of my fav cutscenes. I actually initially despised her personality, but she grew on me.)

3.Josephine (I love Josephine, she is actually another one of my inquisitors best friends and she was runner up for romantic interest.)

4.Iron Bull (Iron Bull is just funny, don't talk to him often, but when I do he is hilarious and therefore pretty high on my list.)

5.Dorian (he actually went up on my list. Initially he was lower, but I liked him a lot in combat with me)

6. Leliana (she actually was initially lower, but she grew on me a lot.)

7.Varric (Varric actually went down on my list as time went on, but I still enjoy him)

8.Blackwall (he would have been higher as I think he is very sweet, but everytime I speak to him either the responses are boring or he doesn't say much.

9.Sera (Sera initially started VERY high on the list and I still love her in very SMALL doses, but after a while she gets to be too much and thats why I put her lower.)

10.Vivienne (Vivienne is just mysterious enough to not be at the bottom, but not interesting enough to be towards the top. She is also too distrusting for my taste.)

11. Cole (I think Cole is adorable, but I just don't use or talk to him often enough, not sure why. I have nothing technically against him, just don't find him particularly interesting.)

12.Solas (Solas made the bottom of my list because I honestly disliked him from the moment I met him. I don't dislike his stance on things in general, its more I just don't find him interesting. He was always my least favorite to talk to and still is. That is literally the only reason and I don't even know why honestly. I just rarely talk to him unless I feel I need to.)

Keep in mind that most of these characters are rated in order of who I find the most interesting, funny, etc....as well as who my character is closest with. Cullen is first because he is my female elf's romantic interest. Cassandra is second because she is my female elf's best friend. The rest are rated on who I prefer to talk to. I actually think Iron Bull should be lower on my list as I really don't have much dialogue with him. The reason he is high is because the little dialogue I do have with him is really funny  :D .

4. Varric

5. Sera

6. Cole

7. Solas     (can't see what unearth is so special about him)
