Companions:

1. Cassandra - Her romance seemed to end as soon as it started and wasn't paced very well in my opinion, so it was a bit disappointing, but I loved her overall character and her friendship arc was fantastic.

2. Dorian - He really surprised me. I wasn't particularly interested in his character before the game came out, but I really enjoyed his dialogue and attitude. As with Cassandra his romance wasn't my cup of tea, but he ended up being one of my Inquisitors closest friends.

3. Varric - I thought he'd be lower since I found him a bit dull in Dragon Age 2 and didn't really want him back, but I much preferred him here. He actually had flaws and disagreed with my Inquisitor at times, while also keeping the fun elements. So much better here than before.

4. Vivienne - I liked her attitude, and she could be really nice when she wanted to. She also spoke a lot of a sense, even if I didn't always agree with her, and I liked her ability to tear people apart verbally.

5. Solas - A type of character we haven't really seen before and I liked it. He had some good banters and some really interesting dialogue about the fade and the elves, which tied in well to the story.

6. Cole - I didn't use him much because I found two handed rogues lacking, but he was an interesting character and I really liked his banters.

7. Sera - I liked her character and how she was written, but refusing to believe in things right before her eyes is a character trait that's impossible to empathise with, at least for me. She had interesting views, but if she were a real person I wouldn't be able to get along with her at all.

8. The Iron Bull - I was really disappointed with him. He never seemed to talk about how the result of his personal quest affected him, wasting the perfect opportunity to add some depth and emotion to the character and leaving him feeling shallow. And while at first I was excited for his romance it ended up being one of my least favourite Bioware romances ever.

Spoiler

9. Blackwall - He was dull. The reveal was interesting and he was a nice guy, but it was not enough to make up for the fact that he was much duller than the other companions. Maybe if I talk to him more and use him more in a future playthrough I'll see more in him.

Advisors:

1. Josephine - I really enjoyed her pacifistic attitude, integrity and character quirks. Her romance was very light-hearted, sweet and well paced, which was a blessing since the others available to me were disappointing at best.

2. Leliana - Her crisis of faith and personal quests were very well done.

3. Cullen - I didn't dislike him, but I never got around to doing his personal missions and he didn't interest me as much the other advisors. He'd still come above the final three of the companions list, though.

I like vivienne because i'm sick of all the white people. Seriously. For God sake I think even Josephine is the first of her kind too (latina with an orlesian accent?). I know it's meant to be a fictional version of the European middle ages with knights and kings, but come on now... it's the new millenium.

Solas - He's just really awesome.
Vivienne- I don't get why people hate her. I like her because she can be a b****. She's honest and she is right about a couple things. I think she'll make a great headmaster if I have an option to make a hogwarts.
Dorian - He's like my inquisitor best gay friend.
Iron Bull - I like his character. Even though he's a spy, he's still pretty cool.
Varric (#1 DA2) - He's varric.
Cassandra- My best straight friend.
Sera - Myou crazy ass friend.
Blackwell/Cole - I'm not really sure. I put them in my party last night to try to get to know them better.

I'd have to say...

1. Iron Bull - damn this guy grew on me, at first I only used him to have 2hd damage in my party but he's practically become my favorite

2. Dorian - I love his wit, his sass, and his flair. By the end of the game he kept referring to me as his only friend too so there's that. Another surprise to me.

3. Cassandra - I'd always assumed she'd be at the top of my list, but also became one of my Inquisitor's closest friends (and accidental romance interest apparently)

4. Varric - He was my favorite in DA2, dropped a bit here, but I assume that's due to the difference in friendships he has with Hawke and the Inquisitor

5. Cole - Interesting guy, fun to watch him do his thing

6. Blackwall - Used to be my favorite, at one point was considering a romance, but... things happened.

7. Vivienne - I initially liked her a lot, but she started coming off the wrong way to me the more I played

8. Solas - Never really spoke to him much, but he never had anything to say when I did...

9. Sera - Also liked her in the beginning too, but she did not mesh well with my "paragon" Inquisitor, so much so that during one of our many, many, many arguments, I was on the verge of just flat out kicking her from the group. Which I have never done to any companion in any game ever.

As for the advisors...

1. Cullen - I romanced him so I'm biased. Very very biased.

2. Josephine - Wasn't too interested at first but, like so many others, she really grew on me. Fun and quirky.

3. Leliana - Not to say I dislike her in any way, I love all the advisors, but I already knew Leliana and what she was like so she didn't grow on me as much as the others did.

1.) Solas

Invaluable knowledge of the unknown. Very sagely. Seems important to have someone in the party with intelligence on the Fade beyond what has been mainstreamed via decades of Chantry authoritarianism.

I haven't finished the game yet, so this list might change by the end of the game. I don't know. I'm scared one of the companions is going to betray me or do something horrible.

1. Solas

2. Dorian

3. Blackwall

4. Cole

5. Cassandra

6. Varric

7. Iron Bull

8. Sera

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

99. Vivienne (urgh)

As for the advisers, I like them all, but Cullen is my favorite, then Josie, then lastly Leliana. I never got the fascination with Leliana, tbh. She's always bored me.

Josie looks like the average Southern Italian or Sicilian to me, rather than a Latina.

1. Dorian and Solas (can’t choose)
2. Sera
3. Cassandra (like her so much more than I thought I would)
4. Varric
5. Cole
6. Iron Bull
7. Vivienne

8. Blackwall

I’ve played for about 110 hours but have not yet finished the game. I have the last (I think?) main mission left so my feelings may change. I’m romancing Cullen so none of the companions have advantage in that regard.

ETA: Just finished the game. Would probably have Viv and Blackwall switch places but other than that, the order stays the same.

I ended up being really surprised by the companions in this game, so what I expected going in is not what I came out in the end with.

1. Cassandra- I thought I would hate her and she would hate me, but I was really surprised that I ended up sharing many of her beliefs. She's also really interesting and has a great romance arc.
2. Vivienne- For some reason I just really like her and I want her to like me. Weird...
3. Dorian- I love his humor, intelligence, and his flirtatiousness with all the Inquisitors. I also feel like he and my Trevelyans are like family after one conversation I had with him.
4. Blackwall- His beliefs and mine align. Also I just love Grey Wardens.
5. Iron Bull- I love his personality, stories, past/background, and his hilarious romance. His model is also really cool.
6. Varric- I liked Varric in DA2 SO MUCH, but in this game, he seems to have lost his charm and interesting points.
7. Sera- I thought I was gonna like Sera and I thought I would support her in everything, but it's like she disapproves of every single thing I do or say.
8. Solas- Maybe I have to play a female elf and romance him to get something interesting out of him, but I don't see the appeal now.
9. Cole- He's pretty boring and I don't ever use him. He also seems to suffer from the Sera Syndrome and disapproves of a few random things. Maybe my opinion will change if I use him more.

I liked all of the advisors, so rating them might be a little difficult.

1. Josephine- I LOVE Josephine and how proper, educated, kind, and adorable she is. I love to hear about her family and life before the Inquisition.
2. Cullen- When Cullen was announced, I knew that I was gonna make my Human Female romance him. Even though he is a little rough around the edges, he is very well done in this game.
3. Leliana- I've always liked Leliana and I still do. I just figured I should have given the other advisors a chance.

Ok, let's do it.

Advisors

  1. Leliana - Because Leliana.

  2. Josephine - Her accent catches me off guard, but other than that she is pretty darn impressive. She seems almost as well connected as Leliana, which in itself is an accomplishment of no small degree.

  3. Cullen - He has very few bright moments.

Companions

  1. Solas - Solas is the best companion in this game. Any conversation I've had with him is most enjoyable, his dry humour is great and his quite warped morality is pretty fascinationg.

  2. Cassandra -   I had thought to romance Josephine in my first playthrough, but Cassandra is just too good. She is never out of my party.

  3. Dorian -  His personality is actually fun, unlike Varric who for two straight games has tried to force his dull humour down our throats.

  4. Blackwall - Because he is a grey warden. B)

  5. Cole - I always wanted to know him more since reading Asunder.

  6. Iron Bull - He is a well written character, his VA is bad though.

  7. Sera - Haven't used her much.

  8. Vivienne - Too arrogant.

  9. Varric - Entitled little ****.

7. Sera. Kinda weird.Funny. That hairstyle's awful. Suffering from the same issue as Cole of "not being Varric".

That's what I intended to think, originally, but once I picked up Sera I decided to try her out for a mission and having her and Solas in the party together is hilarious.  I decided that this time around I'm going to not only play through with different classes and races, but also different group layouts - for each consequitive playthrough. (I'm playing two characters right now; one has Varric in it, the other doesn't, and I have to say that all of these characters are good enough that I don't miss him like I thought i would.)

Only multiple playthroughs can truly tell, but after one with Cassandra-Vivienne-Varric and the others every so often:

1. Blackwall - the best character arc.

2. Cassandra - the way you can feel her faith cracking after the Conclave is heartbreaking. Great romance arc.

3. Solas - An interesting perspective on virtually everything.

4. Dorian - Finally we get some Tevinter perspective on events. His quest is a noble one and he's just a great guy. Surprising bromance for my Inquisitor.

5. Sera - The best banter, great writing, interesting character.

6. Cole - Good character quest but appropriately (unfortunately?) stays away from everyone else for the most part.

7. Varric - He's still a good guy but having him around for a second game got a little tiring. His sarcasm started to wear on my nerves a bit, which is surprising because I thought he was quite funny in DA2.

8. Iron Bull - he's okay.

9. Vivienne - super disappointed. Used her for the whole game hoping she would be fleshed out like everyone else but even after finishing I'm not sure why she was made a companion.

This is actually difficult.

Top: Solas and Cole - they provide insight where none else can, a unique perspective that makes my characters see the world from a different angle

Funny: Iron Bull - Dorian: they amuse me

The reliable: Cassandra and Varrick

Others: Vivien, Blackwall, Sera - they all have points I adore about them, but points that make it difficult to focus on them too long. At times I just want to say to them: sorry, not now, find me tomorrow?

Here's my list. Would be interesting for someone to see which ones most often appear in top 3 and which ones most often appear in bottom 3.

1. Varric

2. Cassandra

3. Cole

4. Solas

5. Dorian

...

the rest of the cast

1. Iron Bull - He's my LI, so that's part of why he's here. Really though, I found him a surprisingly complex character. That hulking, muscular physique helps, too.

2. Cole - I like his alien perspective, and I like his desire to do good but challenges in getting even a basic grasp on what good is. I won't say more for risk of spoilers.

3. Dorian - He makes a good case defending certain aspects of Tevinter, while admitting its faults. He's making Tevinter more gray, while they've been purely villainous in earlier games. It also helps that he has a bit of a case of "mad scientist" going on in his recruitment quest.

4. Solas - I actually dislike Solas more than any of the others. He's the only one to express disapproval at the direction of the Inquisition, and I find his views distasteful. I love disagreeing with him, though. He's an interesting character. I'm just past Wicked Hearts, and I've had this feeling from the beginning that the guy will turn evil or something. I don't know if it's true since I haven't played further, but I look forward to finding out. Either way, he's interesting.

5. Cassandra - For a long time, she seemed like she was a bit flat of a character. However, after her personal quest, she's showing signs of growth, and I like the direction her character's taking.

6. Varric - He was a great character in DA2, but here, he's old news.

7. Vivienne - I use her in my party quite a bit because Knight Enchanter's useful and I built her well. Still, she has very little interesting to say.

8. Sera - I just can't take her seriously as a person. Sure, you want to help the common people. You're still crazy, though.

9. Blackwall - I generally forget to talk to him. It's like he might as well not even be there. It probably doesn't help that I gave him 2H skills and found I don't like using 2H in my party, but I also can't really get interested in his character.

1. Cassandra- I really like her. I get the sense of someone who is very lonely (Varric jabbed her on the Storm Coast about having few friends and it was painful) and whose sense of duty overrides her desire for friendship. But she has a good soul and is very warm-hearted under that gruff exterior. I've gotten very fond of her.

2. Varric-He lightens the mood. Very funny guy and the banter between him and Cassandra on the trail is worth taking those two along every trip.

3. Solas-He seems very dry but he's been very supportive. My only beef with him so far is there is this niggling distrust I have for him for some reason.

4. Dorian- He's hilarious and I really need to take him along on more missions than I have. Took him and Sera on a trip yesterday and their banter got very lively and very "blue." Take those two along if you haven't!

5.Sera, I am warming to her little by little. She's definitely the "brat" of the group and she is seriously impolite to Solas and I didn't care for that. Her best pairing seems to be Dorian.

6. Blackwall-Don't trust him. He's not telling me the truth about the Wardens and I can sense it. I've taken him along a few times and no one talks to him. He seems to be the dull lad of the group.

7. Viv- I need to get to know her better. I like her abilities and she rocks in a fight but I've avoided convos with her. The one I did have so far she really didn't care for my views and was plain about it. I need to see if I can find some common ground with her. She pairs well with Bull and their banter is pretty funny mostly cause she dominates him completely.

8. Iron Bull-I haven't really used him much as I play a warrior and Cassandra has been my preferred second tank. I need to get some more use from him.

9. Cole-He just joined up. Still a blank slate at this point.

Advisors:

Leiliana- I admire her dedication and her determination. I find myself wanting to please her. Too bad she is not a romance for this game.

Josephine-I like her soft, low-key, responses and she clearly gets the job done.

Cullen-I've preferred to use the other two when I can as soft-power and subterfuge have been my preference. I also did not side with him on the Templar question so I am uncertain of him in general.

1. Dorian - From the moment I first encountered him he just brightened my experience. I love his mannerisms, and his backstory really tugged at my heartstrings. He's also sexy.

2. Cassandra - I never expected to like her as much as I do. Based on Dragon Age 2, I thought she would be tiresome. She defied all my expectations, and I find her to be a really well-developed character.

3. Solas - Another one I didn't find particularly intriguing going in. I played as a female elf mage my first time around, and she and Solas ended up having a lot of their views in common. The further I got into the main storyline, the more I appreciated him.

4. Varric - A lot of this may be held over from DA2, but I can't not love him. I also really enjoy watching his relationship with Cassandra develop. The way he seems to treasure his friendship with Hawke also just gets me.

5. Cole - He's the character I was most excited about going in, but he didn't necessarily end up being my favorite. I find him inscrutable sometimes, and it keeps me from feeling close to him. I am still really intrigued by him, though, and I think he has a good heart. Sometimes I do wish I could hug him.

6. Blackwall - I like Blackwall well enough. I find him to be a generally non-offensive character. He was a bit of a one-note Nancy for a while until I learned more about his background.

7. Iron Bull - I don't dislike him. I dislike his voice. His "big, aggressive, hedonist warrior-guy" thing feels a bit predictable. But I like that this is seemingly at odds with his belief in the Qun, and that keeps him interesting. When it comes to being a Qunari, he's not predictable.

8. Sera - One of two companions I dis-like. We disagree on everything. I find her needlessly hateful toward a lot of people. She annoys me most of the time I speak to her, and I find her humor really forced. Next time I might send her away.

9. Vivienne - Ugh. So petty and juvenile. Her condescending attitude is infuriating. I never take her with me anywhere because I just think she's the worst. My Inquisitor has been nothing but polite and accommodating to her, and she still acts like I'm an uneducated, brutish heathen. What a mean-spirited person.

1. Solas  -  Great character, we got along great

2. Dorian  -  LOVE him!  He's so funny and interesting.  Great voice work

3. Varric  -  Always gonna love Varric

4. Cole  -  Liked getting to know him and helping him.

5. Cassandra  -  Thought I'd hate her but ended up loving her.

6. Iron Bull  -  Good guy and enjoyed learning a different side of the Qunari.

7. Blackwall  -  He's a good guy that has been through some stuff.  Much respect

8. Sera  -  She's hilarious and I like her stance on the nobles.  However, she definitely has problems.

9. Vivienne  -  Did not like her.  She was such a b****.  I really hated her when she told me she was getting rid of my stuff because it had lice and fleas in it.

I've never considered "giving someone the raspberry" the same as a fart noise; it's more of a taunt - often a teasing, or childish taunt.  Trust me, if I perceived it as a "fart noise" I would have dropped her in an instant.

Solas: I like him. The typical wise, magical Elven character, but I like him.

Cassandra: A good, proud character with a cliched personality quirk, but I also like her. She's someone I can picture being friends with.

Varric: the opposite of Cassandra but also someone I can clearly picture being friends and having fun with. He's great and I love the voice acting.

Cole: unique character concept, I like him as well.

Blackwall: Rather bland....... but otherwise an alright character with no real glaring mishap.

Dorian: Arrogant, yes, but he doesn't strike me as annoying: on the contrary, he and I can share a good drink together and I believe I'll enjoy his company.

Vivienne: Hmm.... not the kind of character I enjoy, to be honest.

Iron Bull: the same as Varric.

----------

Sera: What the hell is she doing in the Inquisition anyway.
