Just looking for a brief explanation as to why I wasn't able to use him

Do his personal quest.

Did you make him more spirit like? I know with a humanized Cole Corypheus tried to take him over and he goes "No!" and stays independent.

Otherwise he can be bound by cory, like other demons.

I did do the personal quest where you get the amulet or whatever but I still wasn't able

Another thing I was wondering is, when you look up all the companions in the game they say there is nine well why when you look on the game case you see a dwarf and yet i only have varric in my party ?

There is another quest for Cole after you fetch the amulet from the War Table. It is a quest linked with Solas and Varric.

I was able to use him just fine I did his story though and chose the route that made him more human, could be why. There was no one I couldn't use in the final battle.
