There are so many good combinations to choose from, but right now I'm playing Cassandra, for a tank with a lot to interact with; Varric, because I like his character and he has much to say, esp. to Cassandra, and because I sometimes I need a rogue. I like Cole too, but not as much as Varric, despite some of his limitations. Lastly, I use Dorian because his spell build mixes well with mine, though I also like Vivienne, as she and I share the electric field barrier spell.

Cassandra, Varric, and Dorian, with a dual-dagger rogue Inquisitor.
Cassandra is full tank + Templar specialization, Varric full archer + whatever the name is for his speciliazation, and Dorian full fire mage + Necromancer spec.

Me as sword n board warrior, Blackwall, Varric, and Cole.
I don't like playing as mages, so they're out, though I occasionally switch in Dorian since we're dating. I despise Sera so she's out.
Cass and Iron Bull are okay, but Blackwall's become my favorite.

In the one playthrough that I've finished so far, my composition went like this and I loved it:
Knight Enchanter Mage
Iron Bull
Vivienne
Sera
It seems Sera and Vivienne are kind of divisive characters, but I still loved this group together, they had some pretty great banter. For my second playthrough, this is what I'm thinking of going with:
Rift Mage... Mage
Iron Bull
Dorian
Sera/Blackwall
Iron Bull is my favorite dude and can't leave him behind, Dorian will be my Quizzy's romance, and so now I'm just deciding between Sera or Blackwall. I love Sera, and would love to see her interactions with Dorian, but I've heard Blackwall has some great banter with Bull too, so I'm kind of split. Anyone have any advice?

Cassandra, Iron Bull, Sera.
Im a mage and I prefer to be the only one, it makes me feel more powerful (don't judge me!), other then that I wanted one damage of each class and a tank so I picked the charactes I liked the most. At first I ran Blackwall instead of Iron Bull but after a certain story occurance (not sure if im allowed to post spoilers here but if you have completed the game you probably know what I mean) I switched him out.

Inquisitor Mage - mostly support
Iron Bull - Main Tank
Blackwall - Off Tank
Sera - Ranger
I ended up with this party combo i was originally running two Mages but they were often attacking randomly and drawing monsters to attack and kill them so i switched out a mage for Blackwall and set him to protect Sera. Now what happens is Iron Bull Tanks a main target while others get sucked in to the ranged and Blackwall takes them so i have two groups then i just take them down. If there are a lot of ranged attackers i just set everyone to attack my target so they focus them down first.
I've also later found this combo is great for banter. Iron Bull and Sera never stop talking about something and Blackwall and Bull have the best bromance ever XD.

Solas, Cole and Iron Bull.
They're just the character I think is most interesting in general.

Inquisitor Mage
Cassandra/Blackwall
Varric/Sera
Dorian
I love to have two mages in my party. Between Dorian and my Quizzie, the screen is constantly lit with purple and green light
Cassandra is very good at drawing the aggro, and, man, she can TANK
Blackwall is awesome too, though for some reason I have to manage him a bit more than Cass. Sometimes I take Bull with me, instead of Dorian, for the giggles. I find him rather squishy, though. Have to pay a lot of attention to him in a fight.

Inquisitor Mage, mainly Storm/Necromancer with a few points in Spirit, I love my cc
Cassandra- LI and generally an awesome tank
Sera- She's my favourite companion and to think that I hated her after being first announced
Iron Bull or Dorian- Depending on situation, if fighting a dragon or something, Dorian comes in to uphold the continuous barirer thingy, both are bros
Conversations between Bull and Sera with just about anyone are hilarious.

Cassandra, Varric, & Dorian, mostly just because I like these characters the best of the group individually at the moment.

Iron Bull is very squishy, I no longer use him, but I'm a Qunari myself, and two is too much anyway.
I also have two mages, and one of them is me. Our lineups are very similar, with me as a mage.

Rogue Inquisitor, Dorian and Cassandra. Last spot is between Vivienne and Bull. I can never decide if two mages or two warrior are more useful.

Yeah, no kidding, eh? I found that two-handers were squishy in DA:O as well. As much as I liked Sten, I rarely brought him along. DA:2 was a little different. Fenris could tank pretty well, and I could get away with not having Aveline along. Once his specialization unlocked, Bull got a bit better. I still have to have a tank to draw the aggro, though.

Two mages FTW
Had my party structured like that since DA:O. Of course, now I cannot have a healer and a damage dealer anymore, but, hey, I won't say no to the opportunity of shooting lightning at fools at twice the rate ![]()

I'm playing on Nightmare and I've found Cassandra, Sera and Vivienne/Dorian to be really effective. Don't know what it is, and I haven't tried many other variations with my parties. Blackwall instead of Cassandra also works, though not to the same extent, I have to try and outfit him better. Same goes for Dorian, needs to be outfitted better but still effective.
Nightmare sucks balls though. Seriously. I've only just hit level 14, and I have been playing this game since it was released (the 21st for me).

My favorite is Knight Enchanter me, Sera, Dorian, and Iron Bull. The banter is hilarious, but I usually switch them out keeping only Sera as the most consistent.

I like to have two going so that I've got 'fire (or lightning) and ice.'

I was so busy doing little quests stuck in the Hinterlands, that I took my time exploring the Skyhold and talking to everyone, so I'm just now working on my specialization, though I always like a battle mage, and expect to go with Knight-Enchanter once they're all done and I've got my choice. Dorian is a necro, so that helps as that need is filled, and the horror FX with the skull face are cool. But before I choose for sure, I'll have all of the three set-requirements done, and play them all some at some point. Gets a bit confusing on saved games, like choosing mages or templars, but I manage.
