I'm playing on Nightmare and I've found Cassandra, Sera and Vivienne/Dorian to be really effective. Don't know what it is, and I haven't tried many other variations with my parties. Blackwall instead of Cassandra also works, though not to the same extent, I have to try and outfit him better. Same goes for Dorian, needs to be outfitted better but still effective.

Nightmare sucks balls though. Seriously. I've only just hit level 14, and I have been playing this game since it was released (the 21st for me).

If it sucks so bad, why are you playing at that difficulty?  I like to enjoy the game and have good battles, but not the Dark Souls sort of nonsense.  That's crazy.

I was so busy doing little quests stuck in the Hinterlands, that I took my time exploring the Skyhold and talking to everyone, so I'm just now working on my specialization, though I always like a battle mage, and expect to go with Knight-Enchanter once they're all done and I've got my choice.  Dorian is a necro, so that helps as that need is filled, and the horror FX with the skull face are cool.  But before I choose for sure, I'll have all of the three set-requirements done, and play them all some at some point.  Gets a bit confusing on saved games, like choosing mages or templars, but I manage.

Can you complete all of the specs before picking a spec? I chose Reaver but I haven't picked up the other two because I don't want to end up with Templar or Champion when it will just be a detriment to my Inquisitor. Can I pick them up to get any extra xp and not choose them as my spec?

Knight Enchanter Mage

Dorian

Blackwall

Varric/Sera/Iron Bull/Vivienne

I always switched out the final spot while keeping the first two. Blackwall was an awesome tank and Dorian was my Gomez Adams so it was about bringing along an extra person.  Sadly I didn't use Iron Bull as much as I would have liked cause he died too fast. Varric also died fast. Sera stayed up much longer but still went down often and Vivienne was damn near invincible.

Right now it's Vivienne (KE rocks!!!), Blackwall (he really is a WALL), and Iron Bull. Bull dies a lot but only after murdering everything in sight. I'm an archer, so I just hang back and shoot people and disappear for a few seconds if anyone breaks away from the main battle and tries to get at me.

Pentaghast is the best tank in the game, Sera's specialization offers great versatility, and Solas is just a bad motherf*cker.

I make Blackwall work for sidequests but otherwise Cassandra is tried and true.

Honorable mentions: Vivienne, Dorian, and Varric.

It says that learning about them all, though you can only choose one, is very beneficial.  So I'm guessing it's before or after you choose your own, but I'm going to wait until I have all three just in case.  That's my only real 'quest' right now, to complete those three and save it before I choose and check them all out for fun.

Varric/Bull/Dorian

I'm the tank, Varric opens doors and Dorian does that magic stuff. And I like those three more than the others ^_^

I've been experimenting with multiple parties for banter purposes, and I love Team Mage. My Magequisitor/Solas/Dorian/Viv. You get to hear them all be hilariously catty towards one another; Solas and Dorian nerd out about magical techniques, Viv snarks at Solas about accidentally setting his coat on fire, Solas snarks back about Viv front-loading her barriers, the rich people make fun of the elf's outfit... It's pretty great.

It's also a surprisingly viable party gameplay-wise (so long as you don't need anything unlocked or kicked down). Now, I'm only on normal, but Team Mage might as well be called Team Hilarious Overkill. Barriers are up constantly and everything surrounding them is on fire.

Blackwall, Dorian, and Vivienne.

It's deliciously volatile.

Depends on which Inquisitor.

My female Elven Mage: (One of each element, plus Necromancy) - DPS
Cassandra - Tank
Varric - DPS (opens locks)
Solas - Healer/Shields

At a certain point I never needed Health Potions with this combo.

That's a fun idea, and with this game, a plausible one, though I might keep Varric around for those locks.  Especially since Dorian's a necromancer, Solas is a rift mage, and I can be the one I want (with rift a very close 2nd), and that's the Knight Enchanter depending on how it looks and plays with that spirit blade.  Don't have a companion that is one, so I can't preview it yet, but I'm close to earning the training in it, so I'll save it and then choose that to play with.

Definitely. With two KEs, a necromancer, and a rift mage you'll be pretty unstoppable. I went rift mage, myself, and Solas and I just take turns finishing each other's combos.

Also the upgraded fade step is so much fun. You teleport through dudes and they freeze, then you shatter them with stonefist.

Most of the times I go with my mage, Cassandra as my tank, Dorian because I love him and Vivienne because she and Dorian have fun gossip banter.

I.e.: saying the quartermaster of Skyhold is a twisted man because of his choice of wine (vinegar according to them)

Inquisitor mage - Knight Enchanter - Support/Damage (That spec just seems to break dragon fights, and most other fights).

Blackwall - Tank

Iron Bull/Solas/Dorian - Extra support (from the mages) and extra damage. It really depended on how I was feeling at the time

Cole - Pure Damage - He died the most.

I always wanted to use Vivienne but I couldn't have two Knight Enchanters in the party at the same time. It just felt too dirty.

I've been running three mages plus Cassandra for most of the game (Solas and Vivienne have some of the best conversations), but I've just gotten Cole and I'm really surprised how much I like having a dagger rogua along.

My Lady Dalish.

- Cole

- Vivienne

- The Iron Bull

The banter between the three is hilarious. Bull tries to get Cole more mature and dirty, think up ways to use Cole's special abilities, tries to get to guess a number only to have dredge up a few horrible things from the past and one naughty thing. Vivienne plays around with Bull. He calls her ma'am. The banter with these three is always funny

In the one playthrough that I've finished so far, my composition went like this and I loved it:

Knight Enchanter Mage

Iron Bull

Vivienne

Sera

It seems Sera and Vivienne are kind of divisive characters, but I still loved this group together, they had some pretty great banter. For my second playthrough, this is what I'm thinking of going with:

Rift Mage... Mage

Iron Bull

Dorian

Sera/Blackwall

Iron Bull is my favorite dude and can't leave him behind, Dorian will be my Quizzy's romance, and so now I'm just deciding between Sera or Blackwall. I love Sera, and would love to see her interactions with Dorian, but I've heard Blackwall has some great banter with Bull too, so I'm kind of split. Anyone have any advice?

Dorian and Sera banter is great (well I like at least)

Dorian, Iron Bull and Cole. The banter is hilarious and it's a team that works surprisingly well.

Cassandra, Cole, Solas: "Team Mutually Respectful Moral and Theological Debate" and my three favourites. It's really heartwarming how they develop with each other.

If I want something a little more light-hearted, I swap in Dorian and/or Varric. Their bets are funny, and both mesh very well with Cole.

On my Knight Enchanter my usual party was:

Cass (Tank)

Varric

Solas/Dorian

I just particularly liked those characters and the group set-up seemed to work well. I did swap Blackwall/Iron Bull for the Solas/Dorian spot when I neded to do their personal quest things.

I've only played as a mage so far. I usually party with a tank, two damage dealers, and a support.

Usually I end up with me (mage), Dorian/Solas, Cassandra/Bull, and Cole/Varric.

It's a tossup between Cassandra/Varric/Solas and Sera/Dorian/Bull. Generally, Cassandra will be in either combination most of the time, since I prefer having her around as the warrior over either Bull or Blackwall, the former being the exception when going dragon hunting for his banter rather than combat prowess (which is strangely disappointing).
