Is it worth it?

I've watched extended footage on Dragon Age: Inquisition and I don't know if I would like the combat...but it looks like a decent amount of loot and a nice big area to explore, with (hopefully) good BioWare writing.
-what are the biggest strengths of the game?
-biggest weaknesses?
-Loot system?
-world/map?
-writing and story?
Thanks for any insight.

Depends on who you ask dude. Some love this game while others hated it. For some, the biggest strength is that this game is huge. For others the biggest weakness is that the game is huge.
So

The writing is awesome, as are all the artwork and voice-overs. My toon even has an English accent! The interface 'takes a lot of love' as someone has aptly put it but it works well enough to make it possible to enjoy this amazing game. The biggest threat in the beginning is a bit of tedium, until you pick up a few skills (you, the player) regarding how to organise your adventuring for maximum enjoyment. What worked for me was playing the prologue with different races and classes which allowed me to get the hang of things before venturing out into the big game world.
P.S.: The maps are huge. Trying to systematically hoover XP and loot in the traditional manner is apt to result in tedium at first; especially in the beginning (i.e. after the world map becomes accessible) it is better to focus on worthy objectives and to go straight for the big prizes. Where DAO was one seemingly unending learning curve regarding combat, DAI allows more carefree adventuring. For general work - outside special tricky encounters - the AI works well enough on auto-pilot so that you can come down on bread-and-butter enemies like a ton of bricks without any need to control the companions. That makes it possible to concentrate on your own character, avoiding the fragmentation of focus that results from controlling the actions of a whole team blow by blow. The freedom to explore and adventure in this game feels a lot like TES games or Privateer/Freelancer.

Characters, exploration, visuals, player agency, main questline, customisation. These are all astoundingly well done.
-biggest weaknesses?
Side quests are insubstantial and unlike the main quest, don't feature cinematics and have substantially fewer dialogue options. Their main purpose is to add a bit of flavour to the world and to encourage the player to explore. There are also a few bugs: when you are making your character at the start of the game, switch between the genders a few times to make sure the game recognises your character properly. Finally, some people find the start is too slow, but it gets really good afterwards. If you are getting bored at the beginning, power through the first few main quests until you get to Skyhold (you'll need to unlock power to do so, which is gained from side quests, but you can miss out the majority of them if you want).
-Loot system?
Good with one issue: junk and quest items both get put into the Valuables section of the Inventory. Quest items have gold icons next to their names: don't sell those ones. Any item in the Valuables section of the inventory that doesn't have a gold icon next to it should be sold.
-world/map?
Incredible in every way. Game is multi-region; regions are all visually very distinct. They vary in size from medium to huge and there's a fair number of them.
-writing and story?
Excellent when it comes to the main quest and the large cast of main cast characters. Minor characters and side quests are often interesting too, if underdeveloped.
One last note - I haven't mentioned combat since it's a bit decisive. There are two ways to play: tactical cam or real-time. I enjoy both, but this is probably the most subjective part of the game. Finally, I'm on PS4. PC users are reporting a number of issues so it might be best to wait for a patch if playing on PC.

47 hours in and I'm loving every minute. Personally, I haven't found the opening areas tedious, so I've been hanging around in those areas for as long as possible, hoovering up every last little quest and collectible I can find. If you are the type to bore of this kind of thing, however, it's important to remember you can move on from here and push the story along, long before you've exhausted everything there is to do.
The writing and voice acting have kept me invested in the characters. As in DA:O, BW seems to have remembered how to make characters who criticise and snipe at each other without falling into the DA2 trap of making them obnoxious.
I very seldom bother with the more pernickety aspects of this type of game (crafting, creating runes, mixing potions etc) but, in DA:I, even that is relatively straightforward and I've already made myself a couple of different armours and weapons.
Honestly, I can't recommend this game highly enough. As others have mentioned, though, if you plan to play on a new gen console (PS4 or XB1), you should have no problems, but if you're playing on PS3, XBox 360 or - especially - PC, a lot of people are reporting some serious problems and so you might want to wait for these to be patched. We've been told there's definitely one coming!

Definitely DAI. I was a couple of hours into FC4 when I got DAI and I haven't played FC4 since. DAI has quickly become one of my all time favorite games. Seriously, it's that good.

Judging by the fact you want an FC game i'm assuming you don't mind an open world worth travelling.
Strengths: Character development, dialogue and companion side quests. Story is well told and very well written, some points are genuinely moving, cinematics are beyond beautiful and the world itself is a massive playground. The little details add to an impressive atmosphere that adapts as you progress, you can take your time or move along with the main story without too much interruption, some of the side quests are intriguing and a few are impressive but you'll have to work to find them. Banter is humorous, divisive and uniting all at the same time as well as interactive. The game can be confronting or welcoming and some of the decisions you make will impact you as you progress rather than at key points, family friends and faith all come into play. Your race and class have never mattered more in DA. Combat is excellent to look at with new enemies and varying animals and beasts as mounts are also pretty cool. The environments are massive but they have fast travel options.
Weaknesses: There are a reasonable number of bugs, PC has the worst of it but consoles suffer as well. Many of the side quests while avoidable are lacklustre and if you like to grind you can find yourself over levelled quickly, healing spells are gone and it takes time to upgrade potion slots, ability points are gone and are upgraded with your spells and abilities 3+ strength for ability X for example. There's 8 quick use ability slots but they are the only abilities available in fights you can change them as you go thankfully.
I'd recommend it if you like DA like RPG's and like open world .
Edit: The Evil Within surprised me after I mastered the mechanics good game.

My take (PC version):
-biggest weaknesses?
Bugs, bugs, bugs. By far the buggiest Bioware game I've ever played. I've experienced cut-scenes failing to fire, audio cut outs (happens several times during a play session), crashes to desktop, interface lockups that required me to alt-f4 and, characters not switching correctly (one character has the abilities from another character, clothing from one character appearing on another character), etc. Others have experience issues with gender swaps mid game, issues with class specializations, etc.
PC controls aren't the best, particularly when using the tactical cam. I gave up after 10 hours or so, switched to a controller, and haven't looked back.
Console inventory interface, console character ability interface, etc. I wish that the GUI could be modded so some enterprising soul could develop a PC focused user interface like the wonderful SkyUI for Skyrim.
The repeatable side quests can make the game feel a bit MMO-like at times but this is a minor complaint.
No modding support!!
-Loot system?
I like that the game has a 'take all' option that is very quick and easy to select.
The inventory interface could be better (PC point of view).
I don't feel like there is enough special loot in the game (unique items with story or even quests).
Research items are mixed in with valuables (i.e. junk). I didn't realize this until I read about it on the forums so I unintentionally sold a lot of creature research items.
I like how armor looks different depending on which companion wears it.
-world/map?
Absolutely awesome. This is the best world/map and exploration in a BioWare game since BG2. They struck a good balance between open world accessibility and exploration and the Bioware tradition of narrative driven content.
I hope this sets a new standard for what to expect from any Bioware RPG, not just Dragon Age 4. The thought of a new Mass Effect done in this style is very exciting.
-writing and story?
A definite improvement over DA2. I think that the companions are better written and realized. I would probably put it on par with DA:0. My favorite Bioware story would probably be Mass Effect 1. I also think Mass Effect has the better companions/villains etc.
I haven't finished the game yet so I haven't really developed an opinion on the main plot but it seems serviceable so far. There are a lot of good stories interwoven with the companions and advisers.

If you are playing on a PC you will most likely get annoyed with the game, but the word is they are going to be patching it.
When it's fixed it should be splendid.

Unique items do pop up pretty late in the game that wasn't such a good thing either.

The consoles are suffering from the same bugs. I think every platform needs a patch.
That being said, I'm loving the story, the immersive graphics and detail in each huge, open area. The characters are interesting and unique. The character building and combat are fairly engaging and fun.
I'm really liking the game so far. This is definitely a unique and expansive experience.

Oh, I missed the biggest strengths section.
Biggest strengths:
- World exploration & size. It's a massive game.
- Beautiful graphics. The world builders really outdid themselves and this is, by far, the most realized world in a Bioware game (at least since the Infinity engine games)
- Character dialogue is great and the companions are interesting.
And I also forgot a big weakness:
- Combat. It's far too action focused for me. It's worse than DA2 in this respect and I never thought I'd be wishing for DA2 combat in a DA game. Ideally I'd like something that is a mix between DA:O and DA2 (i.e. DA:O combat but a bit faster paced).
