If this information is already out there, please point me toward it.

I really, really like the guard mechanic in DA:I. But there's a lot about it that's unclear to me.

I know that every character has a max amount of guard they can have at a time (can be influenced by talents). Is it also influenced by level? By max health? By armor rating?

I would imaging that 100% guard on a lvl 12 warrior with 700 health is going to be a lot higher than 100% guard on a lvl 2 warrior with 200 health. I just don't know how much each factors into it.

When my guard takes damage... does my armor rating and appropriate defense (melee/magic/ranged, depending on what's hitting me) have an effect?

This would be really, really great to know because it would significantly effect my equipment choices.

If max guard is linked to my char's health, then I'll add a lot more +health items (I barely use them now because I almost always have SOME guard up). If guard damage is mitigated by melee defense, then I'll stack more melee defense items so my guard lasts longer.

I just don't know what effects it though.....

In the game the thing talks about how guard it generates. Presumably armour mitigates the loss.

Tutorial in codex doesn't say anything about the more detailed mechanics like damage mitigation and what factors effect guard's "hit points"

I'd also like to know more about guard. I think the game even misses a codex entry or tutorial on how guard is generated in the first place and you can only find an answer if you look at the descriptions of close combat character. Playing an archer this doesn't came naturally and only three hours into the game I started to examine the feature. But beyong the point of how it's generated there isn't mich information unfortunately.

Oh and since I hate posts that mention things but don't explain them, let me write it down in case someone with similar questions find this topic and looks for data:

Guard is generated by any kind of taunt-skill. So for starters this would be the actual "taunt" skill and also the "warcry" skill. It is not as much as an actual (physical) bonus armor but more a kind of "concentration", meaning that the warrior challenges his enemies and is the focusing at this fight, raising the shield and / or using his or her armor to the advantage. Enemies must overcome this focus in order to harm the health of the warrior.

(Correct me if I'm wrong)

If you look under one of the early tutorial entries that discusses buffs/debuffs, at the END of that entry it talks about barrier and guard. If I have time tomorrow I'll try to copy it in here verbatim. But that contains only the scarce information I mentioned above.

Maximum Guard is 25% of your maximum health, before taking talents that boost max guard into account.

Hope this helps

It does indeed. Means that even for a two-handed warrior, which normally should focus on strenght, constitution might be much more important in order for him to survive. And I thought guard would be a fixed value, like everyone is going to get 100 guard points or something like this.

Thanks

We shouldn't have to come here to ask these questions. This game needs documentation.

This day and age the developers cater towards the pirates - unintentionally of course. Anti-customer DRM mechanisms, half a billion different preorder versions so you'll definitely miss out on something as a paying customer, game still in beta on release...and so on and on.

So...a documentation? :D Yeah sorry, having my sarcastic friday it seems. ^^

I asked both Mike Laidlaw and Cameron Lee about documentation (in person) before release.

Mike said they were trying to document the game, and if there were any significant gaps he favoured patching the game to put the documentation in it.

Cameron said they'd work with the fans to populate relevant wikis so people could get documentation there.

As far as I can tell, neither thing has happened.

How does Guard work in the game world, lore wise anyway ? I mean, is it magic because Guard sounds like Sentinel's version of Tech Armor to me. If creatures and warriors can generate them naturally...Just weird you know...

There's no real lore mention of guard other than it's like a secondary health bar that takes damage over your own first.  Seeing how it generates from abilities like Challenge, War Cry, Rally, Blocking with Shield wall and Block and Slash(with upgrade) I personally see it lore wise as kind of a morale boost to keep you fighting lore wise.  It's not close to your actual amount of hp and the abilities that generate it seem like the kind of thing that gets your blood pumping (successful block, challenging an opponent, war cry to take on all nearby, etc).  Even enemy two handed users that generate Guard do so  by holding their weapon aloft than launching into an unstoppable and devastating four hit attack.  That's just my opinion though *shrugs*.

We shouldn't have to come here to ask these questions. This game needs documentation.

Press the tactical view button and look at the screen. The game clearly shows health, barrier and guard and it should be fairly easy to deduce the ratio. It will also become apparent that +max guard does nothing (level up, look at guard, take the skill that gives you +max guard, look at new guard value)
