This might not be a popular view point, and trust me when i say i really do like Varric, i thought he was the best companion in DA2 and i think Brian Bloom is a fantastic voice actor. But i struggling to see why he is even in this game, he does not actually do much does he? He just seems to be there...

He was a prisoner at the start of the game. Just like the Inquisitor.

Someone you can quickly bond with over mutual prisoner-dom at the beginning of the game.

Also the Hawke connection and being a major fan favourite, I'm guessing. And the more personal stake in the whole red lyrium thing.

This kinda bothers me too. He's an awesome character but the game hardly utilizes him at all.     Compared to DA2 he seems to toned down overall, but thats true to character interactions in general in this game.

These are actually pretty good reasons for him being there. I think the reason i get this feeling might be mostly to do with how central he was to DA2, where here he is more of just a tag along companion.

Varric is awesome, and frankly, I was afraid of him having a personality transplant--as far as I'm concerned Bioware's track record for returning companions has been zero for zero so far--but his characterization was intact.  There's even a funny banter with a nod to his fans on the BSN talking about his chest hair and if he's romanceable.

His presence acts as a tie between DA2 and Inquisition, and we learn what Cass and Leliana were doing looking for Hawke.

I'm guessing because A) he was brought along with Cassandra because her questioning wasn't quite over yet and/or B) because Bioware knew that Hawke would make an appearance again at some point and needed Varric to set the stage.

He's actually pretty important. He's the glue binding together Hawke/DA2, Corypheus, red lyrium, etc. Lots of details from DA2 carried over, and it really just made logical sense for him to stick around, particularly considering his circumstances.

That, and it might make a good book someday.

other then being a prisoner in the beginning of the game which makes perfect sense and something we have known about since the DA:I first trailers hinted at ... does there need to be MORE of a reason for him to be here? Other to tie Hawk in which ties in to the old one?

seriously why does everyone ****** and cry so much about every little ****** detail? So what if this game wasn't written just for you? It is still a great game and despite the popular cry baby opinion around here, best game of the year. maybe not DA:O level but nothing ever will be, mostly because no one knew what Drage Age even was about and got this amazing surprise. Now the franchise is just trying to live up to the hype of our memories (which is impossible even for the original game)

Because it ties the game to DA2 better (he has firsthand experience with red lyrium and Corypheus, who both factor in here, as well as Hawke) and earlier events. Because he was with Cassandra. Because he was heading to the conclave, as a "prisoner." Because he can answer questions that tie the games together. Because he has the most awesome crossbow ever made in Thedas.

This kinda bothers me too. He's an awesome character but the game hardly utilizes him at all.     Compared to DA2 he seems to toned down overall, but thats true to character interactions in general in this game.

I think Varric is toned down rightly so. We barely see him in DA2 after Bartrand's death/"recovery" and he does get slightly more serious there, too. Now he's been kidnapped by the Seeker, seen the sky torn open, and seen that red lyrium is at the church. The red lyrium really throws him. Plus, he's hiding Hawke's location for the beginning part of the game and then dealing with the aftermath. Basically, if Varric were still the guy Hawke met in Kirkwall and no more serious, he'd seem like an idiot. And Varric is no idiot. He still jokes plenty in banter and even with the Inquisitor (if the Inquisitor is inclined towards jokes, more so).

Yeah, I was originally skeptical of Varric returning but he helps tie things together. It almost makes DA2 feel like the prologue to Inquisition in a sense.

The real reason he's there is because the Divine wanted him to sign a book for her.  Cassandra reluctantly admits as much to Vivianne, I believe.  Varric wasn't in the party at the time.

Well, that's kind of the point. He was just there. Cassandra suspected he knew more about Hawke's whereabouts than he said, and she was right. Without Varric, we wouldn't have been able to contact Hawke.

He doesnt have much of a role, but I love that Bianca shows up. Although because of her youthful looks I thought she was his daughter.

Varric also feels personally responsible for the current events due to the red lyrium discovery and events in Kirkwall (e.g. Anders/mage rebellion, lyrium idol). As a character he's struggling with this and his personality (change) reflects it.

It might sound harsh but ... maybe he is a mere left-over from when Hawke was supposed to be the star of Inquisition? Maybe than his role would've had more impact beyond a contact for Hawke's return?

But even then: Varric was all over DA2, in the game, quests and he was narrating the cutscenes etc, it was basically like playing Varric's written tales about Hawke ... You can hardly give him as much screentime in this new game as he had already ...

It could also be because DA2 was told from Varric's perspective.

I think you are right. Since very initially the game was supposed to be about Hawk, I guess Varric  was supposed to be one of the returning companion, much like in ME. They changed the idea but left Varric as a sweet little fan-service.
