Because the party needed someone who simply appreciated you for making the hard decisions instead of complaining that you made the wrong ones.

Most everybody in the game celebrates your choices, it just depends on the choice you make. This goes for Varric as much as anyone else.

This might not be a popular view point, and trust me when i say i really do like Varric, i thought he was the best companion in DA2 and i think Brian Bloom is a fantastic voice actor. But i struggling to see why he is even in this game, he does not actually do much does he? He just seems to be there...

I thought the same for a while. But then.... It seems he is involved in so many things that went wrong prior and leading to the Inquisition's events... Some things that we only learn of because well... he is there.

And if for nothing else, that game of Wicked Grace was worth to pay his stay with my Inquisition :) I'd not get an invite if it wasnt for him!! Loved that scene. Perfect mix of cheesy feels and initial awkwardness ending in what is to me one of the most memorable companions scenes in the game.

I like the trend that bioware does with the Dragon Age series. It's always a bridge to gap old players into the new game. Origins to Awakening was Oghren, Awakening to Dragon age 2 was Anders, Dragon Age 2 to Inquisition was Varric. I wonder who's going to be the next character, maybe Harding

I suspect the next DA game will take place further north, so Cassandra or Dorian is my bet.

I thought he went mad if you let him have the red lyrium thingy in DA2? I wanted a gimpy demonic Varric, was that just bollocks?

simple answer. Fan service. Same thing with Cullen for the ladies.  Funny they say how dragon age is't about a single character when one of the worthless ones has been in all 3 games. Don't be shocked if you see varric in DA4

I think it has to do with keeping ties to the previous games. Having some familiar faces around, really. If there are 100 percent new characters in each game, the links and connections would suffer.

Dorian seems a very good bet if we go to Tevinter. From what I saw he's quickly become a fan favorite and his story is not over.

As for Varric, it's not like he's just there. He provides the connection between DA2 and Inquisition, he knows about Corypheus and red Lyrium, he brings along Hawke, and a few operations are dedicated to him. He brings more to the Inquisition itself than the likes of Blackwall, Sera and Dorian. And yes, it's partly fan-service, but his character grows over the game and he felt relevant to me, it's not like he's a cheap late-minute addition.

There was enough "familiar" faces about this game that including Varric wouldnt have made a difference, Varric was included simply because he contributed to the story an lets not forget he was still a damn prisoner of Cassandra's who was taking him to see the divine, who you might have noticed got a wee bit blew up.

you know the answer aint that hard to see, shouting an crying fan service aint the answer your deluding yourself into thinking it is

Yeah. It makes perfect sense that Varric is around, I agree. Cullen too, I think. The explanation given in the game is more than believable. I thought Sera and Cole joining was more of a headscratcher, really.

It was bollocks. It got me an upgrade to Bianca. He didn't go crazy.

Personally, I'm glad to see Varric and that his story remained consistent.

If Anders died in Awakening, they kind of explained it away when he ran into the Grey Wardens, and Nathaniel in particular, but the whole Justice thing totally flew in the face of the Awakening Epilogue. Varric in DA:I makes more sense than Anders in DA:2 if for no other reason than Varric's proximity to Cassandra.

To help Cole become a real boy.

Easiest way to bring Hawke into the main story and following that the Wardens. He's a bridge as well as a character people love.

I would have rather had Harding on the roster, or they could have at least continued a character we didn't spend that much time with like Sigrun or Nathaniel Howe. I would even take that elf mage from Leliana's Origins DLC, what was his name Fletch? (I'm too lazy to look it up)
