Sure let's have a chevalier vs samurai and finally establish that a knight would cut clean through one with his superior weapons and armor

Don't open the gates of hell, that very dispute will break the forums.

Also why people even compare katana? It's like a Samurai's side arm, comparision between two is same with comparing Colt 1911 with AK-47. Doesn't even makes sense.

The rogues are already pretty ninja-like if you ask me. All those smoke bombs and appearing in random places.

A place with Asian-looking people in it? Sure, why not.

Ninja and Samurai? ... how about 'no'?

and a sword is also a knight's secondary weapon. They were first and foremost mounted warriors armed with a lance for charges

Have fun trying to cut through full plate armor with a katana. Will probably be the last thing you'll ever try to do

its a game. i dont think european swords can cut plate armour either or kill dragons. This extreme anti-katana sentiment feels like a reactionary thing, like because the katana was so revered and people claimed it could cut bullets now anyone who "knows better" feels compelled to mock it and call it the worst weapon in the world any time it's brought up.

Sometimes I feel like "anti-weaboos" are just trying really, really hard to explain away their xenophobia.

Why does it bother you so much? Seriously.

Because every time I see someone who watches Naruto or Death Note go on about how anime is so totally better than Western animation yo and how you're a f**king loser if you watch with dubs, I want to feed them their own insides. "Nah man I don't read books or American comics, I only read manga." ****** off.

Also, I've been asked if I've seen the "original Japanese Avatar: the Last Airbender". That alone cemented my hatred for weeaboos.

If we are going to have asian fantasy cultures, instead of japan; I want India, Indonesia, and southeast asia(cambodia, vietnam, thailand and so forth) instead. Those regions of the world have rich history, rich cultures, rich mythologies that are ripe for story ideas and gaming ideas. But when ever someone talks about 'asia' in games it is always Japan and China.

So no to japan and yes to other asian regions. :)

My favourite is Mongolia, the region where this certain man (but the stories almost made him a demi-god) was born and started the largest empire in history. Totally reduced the Romans to armored boy scouts.

If they were going to introduce a new civilization based on a real world Asian culture, I think the Mongols would be a better choice. They actually were in Europe during the medieval period, and had diplomatic contacts with Europeans in the Crusader states..

It's funny, considering that ninjas, historically, never fought. They were farmers and peasants who took to covertly killing a**hole samurai (because samurai back then were more corrupt and prone to shaking people down than modern gangsters ever were). If they actually got into a fight with a samurai though, they would get their asses handed to them (because the samurai, while a**holes, were trained soldiers). A ninja would poison his target's tea, or kill him while he slept.

As long as it isn't cheesy Naruto style, I wouldn't mind seeing my home land getting a bit of representation in Thedas. Asian culture is more then big breasted anime culture, ninjas and ramen noodles you know...

What about Asian Water Dragons? Or Imperial Palaces? Fireworks?

-snip-

Spoiler

-snip-

*turning in very dumb mode*

Ok now that I'm in my "dumb mod" I can ask some questions freely :)

1)What do modders have to do with Bethesda? This is a mod not some DLC that Bethesda gave by themselves...so what do modders who are fans have to do with Bethesda again!?

2)What does anime have to do with Japan?Because this is what I see...and person that made this post said they want Japanese ancient culture like samurais and ninjas not anime kawaii sh*t-saii stuff. So what does anime have to do with Japanese ancient history again!?

*turning off dumb mode*

Correct answer to both of these questions is simple..."NOTHING!".

When someone say "We want ancient Japanese culture" thing that struck me in my head is this

Spoiler

not that thing modders did with Skyrim or any other game when they wish to make "ancient Japan" so only in end you realize that what they made is anime or stuff from Korean MMO's,because once again when someone says "We want traditional Japanese clothing"what strucks me in head first that they mean on real traditional Japanese kimonos...not this "Slutty-Kawaii kimono" ones.

When they say "Old Japanese people" I think of people as their people back in ancient time.Empras,Warriors,Workers,Slaves, men and women made out of blood and flesh that bled for their country and their children...not "Kawaii-neko" or "Kawaii" in particular ones.

*turning in ultra mega very dumb mode*

So I ask...what does that thing, otakus, modders, games that say they are based on "Japanese culture",anime, the way people see Japan, the way Japan today represents itself even todays Japan itself have to do with ancient Japan and culture that was back then!!!???

We haven't seen the (supposedly) very Germanic Anderfells or the Byzantine Tevinter. After we go there I would be up for Thedosian Japan.

I do see a problem.

Spoiler

Since Bethesda decided that their fantasy world has to have everything...even the tacit inclusion of a "fantasy Japan" that is "over there somewhere"...that no ones actually ever seen, its basically allowed the user base to take otherwise beautifully hand crafted worlds and turn them into what you see above...I mean if I didn't mention Bethesda you'd think that picture was some kind of weird high poly Second Life or something...but its not, its Skyrim, the good old land of blood, leather, steel and death, and apparently (づ。◕‿‿◕。)づSO KAWAII(づ。◕‿‿◕。)づ too.

Cause why? Cause Japan.

Cause Bethesda said "oh yeah Nirn has a very asian culture called Akaviir...way over there on a continent you've never seen..but it invaded Tamriel a few times which is why we know how to make NINJA SWORDS"....when really all Akaviir is, is an excuse to have ninja daito in the first place...and then it just went all technicolor dreamcrap from there.

Sometimes, its just better to say no to Japan.

Eeer, the Altmer bear strong elements of what we would consider Japanese culture, altough not entirely. Also, almond-shaped eyes.... reminiscent of the shape of asian eyes. An Asian-esque culture needs to be carefully introduced,if at all, in DA. There are many cultural elements which are quite different from the Western perspective, so I don't know how well they would mesh in a DA world. Also, ninjas and samurais is a very superficial way of looking at Japan. Strict social codes, a focus on community and working as a group, community more important than the individual, stoicism, spiritism. The Qun is quite close to these actually.

It's funny, considering that ninjas, historically, never fought. If they actually got into a fight with a samurai though, they would get their asses handed to them (because the samurai, while a**holes, were trained soldiers). A ninja would poison his target's tea, or kill him while he slept.

Originally, ninja, actually called shinobi, were samurai who did covert ops. They later became a seperate group who were very mercenary in their dealings though there were some in the Edo period that served the Shogun.  Some were farmers and peasants, but most were trained for their jobs which mostly involved espionage and sabotage, usually through arson.

If discovered, they were very much able to defend themselves and were just as capable as a samurai in 1v1 fights, but never fought fair and prefered to flee.  They weren't the supper soldiers modern media makes them out to be nor were they super assassins. While assassination was something they did, they didn't do it nearly as often as the media projects, sabotage being they're main gig.  My statement of rogues being like ninja was in reference to the modern portrayal of ninja.

Sorry about the history lesson there. I wrote a research paper on the shinobi for my Japanese History class this semester and I was excited to be able to use some of what I learned.
