Im having a lot of troubles on the normal difficulty (after i switched from hard) beating the Rifts\some of the "harder" enemies. I'm fairly at the beginning of the game, in the Hinterlands. Im playing as a two handed Qunari fighter, my party consists of Solas, Cassandra and Varic (sniper), all of my characters are level 6. I really dont know how can i beat the demons (despair\rage\whatever) combined with terror demons.  I tried every possible tactic i could think of, even if i manage to kill the terror demon, half of my party is wiped and i have no potions, the despair demon moves very quickly and does huge amount of damage (230) every shot. I probably should nuke the demons with magic, by most of my spells are area-damage based and every fireball i use kills my tanks (friendly fire is on). It becoming pretty frustrating game, compared to DA:O and DA2.

Any tips greatly appreciated.

The demons at the river rift near the Redcliffe farmland are level 12, all six of them. They are probably meant to give people bloodied noses, just like the high dragon. You'll probably have a much easier time playing a sword and shield tank pairing with Cassandra, than a tricky/problematic glass cannon like a two-hander who has only guard and armour to fall back on for protection. The gap is nowhere near as wide as in DAO, though.

Terrors and Despair Demons can be pulled onto the 'operating table' with a grapple, and if you see a terror bury itself in preparation of a jump, just scatter your team. Jump/disable/kill the Despair Demons as fast as possible, since their magic can hurt low-level characters a lot.

P.S.: my level-four party got thoroughly trashed by the river rift demons, so I left them - and the high dragon - alone even though I hoovered up everything else on that map. They got harvested later when I was in the area anyway, en route to Redcliffe Village.

As was stated, make sure you are always checking the levels of enemies mate. I think that most if not all of us had this happen at least once.

Also some tips for party tactic (the actual tactics screen). Have your defensive mages on "Defend:<tank name>" with their defensive abilities set to "Preferred"

As well, having the Mana/Stam thresholds set to 0% or 10% so that they actually use spells, is a very good tactic.

Lastly, have your other dps and your tank set to "Follow:Controlled Character".

Using these I never have to use tac cam, even on Nightmare.

Tactic for dealing with level 12 foes as a level 6 party.

  • Come back when you have a level 12 party.

I had real probs with some of the rifts because I didn't realise the game opened up the really hard areas pretty early. I would be doing great then next second I would get stomped on...HARD.

The problem is the enemy stats only show in tac view, and I hate the XB1 tac view (too darned close).

Thanks for your answers. This game is pretty weird, i've never thought i'd face dragons hour after I start playing, and other difficult creatures. The general feeling that the game lacks some basic tutorials regarding stuff I see in the different menus and I have no idea how to use. The enemy's AI is also somewhat broken, rift demons walk around bandits and they all get along just fine until they all see me and attack at once. Same goes to great bears and the lyrium possessed rogues in the woods.

DarthGizka,  why do you think a two handed wielder is a problematic build compared to sword-shield type? Because it lacks the defensive abilities the sword-shield possesses?

The menus are very oddly setup, I constantly find myself going to my inventory and expecting to switch to my skills from that, for example. Dunno why. That, and things like research items being dumped under valuables drives me insane.

Really? I see things fight all the time. Only rarely will things ignore others, and that's only if they come from both sides at the same time, and is likely a simple product of how aggro is generated.

Damn wolves.
