I fought the Fereldan Frostback dragon for hours and couldn't kill it. Am I even supposed to kill it at this point?

HA! took me to lvl 16 to finally bring that ****** down, fun tip don't fight the vortex let it bring you in hell run in you'll take less damage and once you're within a certain distance the effect stops, it's entire point is freak you out and fight it and take a metric tonne of damage.
This ain't Skyrim dragons are tough to kill in inquisition.
also this may sound mean but it get's easier to dodge the fireballs with time. you simply.......haven't died enough to learn how they work. try to remember the dragon isn't shooting at you 90% of the time its aiming where you're going to be! that's right these pricks know how to lead targets.
if you think this is bad just wait till you get to the SOB in hard to pronounce area with lots of snow.
I actually found that one to be a lot easier but that was probably because I spent a good amount of time regrouping (hiding) in that staircase lol
There is still another one circling around though ![]()

I went in at level 11 I think with Cassandra, my Mage inquisitor, another mage, because I didn't spec my inquisitor for support, and Varric. Everyone died except Cassandra so I kept resing my team to get them to do some damage to him while he was at distance and then when he went to the platform it was pretty much just Cassandra for the kill. The adds didn't bother me once it was just Cassandra and the Dragon.

Thank you guys. I finally did it. I hate it so much, but in a weird way I love it. In all the games fighting dragons, I finally feel like I really brought down a dragon, not just whittled hitpoints down to zero. Constantly running around avoiding fire, desperately making sure I had barrier on hand... Every game with dragons in it should make them at least this hard. So that's one of ten. I wonder what the rest would be like.

I don't know what you mean by the fireball being like a homing missile. Generally, when I saw the dragon shooting the fireball, I could pause the game and move everyone in my party out of the way. The only thing that sucks is that your companions will constantly walk over the fire trail left behind by it and even just stand in it.
But yes, dragons are very, very difficult in this game. I have changed to Hard ever since I have become a Knight Enchanter (the game is a joke otherwise), but I have to change it back to normal when fighting a dragon. I beat the Fereldan Frostback dragon at level 14, I was a bit late I guess, and it was stil fairly challenging.

I found that, if you stand off on one of the mountains at a certain distance with a mage you can take the dragon's health down and even kill him without ever being attacked. I killed the hinterlands dragon that way. When fighting dragons remember that height definitely helps.

A lot of people don't seem to realise this but you can actually deflect Dragon projectiles with Shield Wall. You just have to face it properly and it will bounce right off without doing any damage whatsoever. It won't do very much damage to your stamina either. As such you might want to actually keep your tank at a distance holding the Dragon's attention and deflecting the fireballs with his/her shield while your ranged characters wail on it. Unfortunately, the Ai is too dumb to do it properly so it does require direct control.
I discovered this with the Fereldan Frostback, actually. It had wiped out my party except for my Inquisitor who was a sword and shield warrior. I held up the shield just to try it and the fireball deflected. Subsequently, I was able to slay it with just my main character. It felt properly epic.

Yeah shield wall is great for dragons you can essentially take no damage I killed a few of the dragons using that method before I discovered Vivienne as a Knight enchanter.
The shield wall tactic stopped working against Vinsomer, wiped out my entire party Swapped Vivienne in as a KE and took it down with just her.

I first saw that dragon at level 6 and died from just one fireball so left and went to do other stuff.
I killed it at around level 11 too I think, maybe 10, partly because i got to doing other things and was like huh maybe i should go back and try the dragon again.
It was my frist dragon kill like most people and really dragons are easy once you learn the tricks to dealing with them and avoiding attacks. Also if your weapons are good for your level and not underleveled you can kind of two man dragons. Let your tank character tank, the AI for tanking is quite good and if you have some resistance armor on the character they can go toe to toe with a dragon on normal difficulty indefinetly the problem is damage to wittle them down faster and take out the summoned baby drakes which realy dont have a lot of life just hit hard on normal difficulty. Take full control of a ranged charaxcter so you can put out the max dps and avoid things while backing up your tank.
I also found that the AI of ranged characters are HORRIBLE at avoiding dragon attacks so change your potion settings on them so they dont eat all your potions and just let them die then use your controlled ranged character to get them on their feet again at opertune times and basicaly treat those extra chracters as disposable weapon enplacements that are just there for extra damage when on their feet. Even if they die alot to stupidity and you have to run over and raise them they are on their feet more then they aren't for extra damage.
Also if you are facing dragons after you have unlocked skyhold save your focus abilities for when the dragon does not have its gaurd up so your mowing through its life and not its gaurd.
I'm still on my first play through and think im getting to the end of the game and have taken out all the dragons on normal difficulty, the only oen that gave me real issues was the one in the lower arena in the area that has 3 dragons. Finnaly had to break down and craft armor for all my characters that had fire resist for that sucker, all the other dragons on normaly difficulty I took out using whatever I was wearing and never messed with resists.

I mean, I died a ton of times, and sane people would have given up, but I did it, and it was an awesome feeling when it got done.
It's mostly about keeping your squishy characters in the right zones - not too far to avoid wing flap damage, not directly behind to avoid the tail, definitely not where the Dragon is looking.

Stay close and to the sides of the dragon, when flies press disengage so you run faster to dodge the balls of whatever, last kill adds asap as they tend to cause more wipes then the actual dragon.

Just cleared the Fereldan Frostback.
Nightmare, Level 12 on main character, Level 11 on the other 3 characters.
Group composition:
Inquisitor (Shield/Sword)
Cassanda (Shield/Sword)
Vivienne (Barrier/Dispel/Revival)
Solas (Frost/Barrier/Chain Lightning)
It took me about 70 minutes to clear the encounter, most of it was spent in tactical camera mode.
This was done on PS4.

You need a mage with ice spells that you will control 90% of the fight, with him you will use barrier whenever you can on your companions you will keep a huge distance from the dragon the only exception being when you drawn in by him flaping his wings. And you will use your ice spells whenever you can and when the dragonlings appear you can and will one hit kill them by freezing them with the ice spell that does that. When he gets on the ledge you will control your melee character and manually direct him to the dragon. You will then move your mage to the rock where the dragon is but keep distance from his claws and bite. I managed to do this at the second try at level 12 as you. Just use your mage with a ice attack and you will see that its way easier.

So, instead of having dedicated healer, they now pretty much force you to have 2 mages and a tank to have a shot at winning tough encounters? So much for versatility, good job bioware. What was the point of removing healing magic, when spamming barriers became even more addictive?

Once I became a Knight Enchanter it was cake. Most of my party went down in the beginning and I just did it solo. I was able to do all the dragons pretty much the same way. A couple of times my party members actually survived. I also didn't start killing them until I was at least a level 12.

I tried this once and had my butt handed to me, but I was employing 0 strategy. I then lowered the difficulty just so I could have enough staying power to experiment with different things to develop a strategy for use on my previous difficulty level.
My deductions:
Give you main tanks fire resistant items (or whoever the dragon targets the most). This makes a crapload of difference.
Spam barrier on your tanks (and any other abilities that make them resist/absorb damage. I successfully killed the dragon with 1 mage on lowered difficulty but when I crank the difficulty back up to go again, I'm taking in two mages this time for maximun barrier spam. It might even be better to manually control a mage for this fight.
Don't run out in the open to get surrounded by dragonlings. When the Frostback is on the hill, you can position your party so she can't hit you with fireballs and you can lure/pick off the dragonlings with ranged attacks until she comes back down or until the mobs are all dead.
Craft some gear tailored to killing dragons.
Don't run with your weapon drawn. Disengage to get to cover faster and to keep your companions from scattering.
I shall see if these deductions bear fruit tonight.
