I fought the Fereldan Frostback dragon for hours and couldn't kill it. Am I even supposed to kill it at this point?

For my first two dragons(Frostback and Abyssal HIgh Dragon), I crafted the Armor of the Dragon for my Inquisitor(a Knight Enchanter) with a masterwork that generates guard for every 3 hits. Having this  armor along with barrier allows my mage to stay up indefinitely.

My Dragon slaying crew

Inquistor(mage/In charge of making sure barriers are on everyone)

Cassandra(she stays up through the whole fight)

Blackwall(stays up through the whole fight except one time during the abyssal)

Iron Bull(He drops frequently, but I think that is because I didn't give him the two-handed ability to generate guard, I respec him to have most of his Reaver tree filled out.)

These dragon fights are so awesome that I recorded videos of those fights.

I hope they add a High Dragon with every story DLC.)

Two down,Eight to go. B)

It too bad there are only three elements(Fire,Ice,Lighting) in this game or we could have more elemental variety types of high dragons(Nature, Spirit, or even Poison).

This is a really tough fight, and I'm struggling mightily to kill this dragon, but that is how it should be. I'm playing the game on nightmare and I'm fighting a High Dragon for God's sake; I don't understand how people can complain that this fight is too hard. It's supposed to be hard!! I keep getting the dragon to half health with most of my potions still left, thinking that I'm going to finally get him, and then by the time the dragon drops to a quarter health bar left, I'm done. It totally kills me in that timespan, and it's SUPER frustrating!! But I will prevail!

I reached a dragon called the Fereledan Frostback Dragon in the Hinterlands. I really learned to hate the 8 potion restriction and the developer who came up with it. It's all but essential to have a party with 2 mages, ready to pop barriers at all times. You can see the fireball coming from the dragon's mouth, but while it felt really organic in DA2, and you could dodge it if you were paying attention, it just feels kinda wrong in DAI. It pretty much is like a teleporting flame, and if the dragon's facing you, it's pretty certainly gonna hit. Like one second the fireball is at the dragon's mouth, and a second later it slams into you. While you can dodge it, it just doesn't feel like it did in DA2, like it's almost a homing missile. So you pretty much need 2 mages. And it's even worse when the dragon flaps its wings and creates a vortex. Why that dishes out so much damage and can kill my mages I have no idea,

I'm a level 12 mage. The Frostback dragon was level 12. It was a challenge to fight, but almost too challenging. Not only did I have trouble with what I wrote about above, but the character AI is too dumb. I gave a character an order to revive a downed teammate in the Tactical View, but immediately when I popped out they stopped what they were doing and just stood and fought. This happened almost every time. Also, I learned that it's a good idea to go into tactics and disable most of the powers from the AI.

But what I really didn't like was that I wasn't able to kill it. I finally got it down to like 2000 health, then it flew off onto a ledge and kept on stunning me and sending dragonlings after me. Was it a story beat that I wasn't supposed to kill it at that moment? I don't know, because I tried to kill a bull I met and I couldn't get it past the last 1/8th of it's health bar. Turns out, it was part of a sidequest. If this game was truly open world, I should have been able to kill it and inform the quest giver that it was dead and suffered the consequences for that. I don't know, but is that the same thing going on here? Can I not kill it and now am stuck in a loop of being stunned and killing lesser dragons because I'm not supposed to fight the Hinterlands dragon yet? If so, Bioware dropped the ball by allowing you to go anywhere and doing anything but not letting you know whether or not it's time to do so yet. If not, it's a bug and Bioware dropped the ball in not fixing it.

Killed it at level 12 easily. If you are a Knight Enchanter just use that transparent step thingy to go under him. No fireballs and the perfect spot to use arcane blade and that fade step. I had me, Vivianne, solas and Cole, and we kicked butt.

PS: Regeneration potions help too

Don't worry about his vortex, hiding under him is great, no fireballs and you can use powerful mage attacks with Vivianne

That was the Easiest Dragon for me.

-Mage Play-through

Did it at level 10 with 3 Tanks, no tactics view, and heavy use of Frost damage. I pretty much solo'd the final 20% because the when the Dragon went to the top of the Hill the warriors all stood in the fire, while I angled my self on the path so I could avoid being hit while casting frost.

-Warrior Play-Through

Did it at level 12, heavy use of tactics, balanced party. Hardly took any damage, and never had to res anyone. I kept range moving and firing (Varric and Dorien), I kept rotating taunts with my tank (Blackwall) and my warrior (two handed) the dragon did less damage as it was in constant state of changing targets.

It took me 3 hours to beat the dragon. I was lvl 10; my party consisted of Varric, Cassandra, Vivienne and my warrior who uses two handed weapons.

I see all these techniques and I think of Spongebob.

"TECHNIQUE! TECHNIQUE!"

I just charged in with Dorian and had him spam his barrier and necromancer spells to summon the dead dragolings, Cassandra be a tank/distraction, and Sera and I attacked (me being a Lighting/Inferno Mage) and picked off the dragonlings when they came. Only died about 20 times and ran out of potions within 2 minutes.

I really hate though how the dragons are *rant* cheap and SPAM THEIR FIREBALLS LIKE IT'S NOTHING. Like seriously how many fireballs can you hork up in 10 seconds? APPARENTLY A LOT. *endrant*

I felt like Dorian was really useful though, his necromancer spells did a good deal of help.

First time I came across it, I had a balanced party and got curb stomped.

The second time I swapped Cass for Blackwall and got curb stomped again.

Third time I thought "F*** it!" and took an all Rogue party and we put that b****** down in seconds.

I've since tried it on every other dragon and found that when it works, dragons die in seconds.
When it doesn't, full party wipe.

There is no middle ground.

just killed that level 12 high dragon with the initial party of inquisitor (human warrior), cass, solas and varic at.. LEVEL 5!.. took me over an hour of spamming winter's grasp and chain lightning with solas while the other guys hanged back so that if solas died, switch to anyone in the party, wait for solas to recover on his own and run back (he died a lot thru running back than being hit by the fireball.. haha..).. found out that if you hide for a while and let it rage attack it's fireball, sometimes it'll use the dragon roar and then stand still.. also when she went up the hill, i just took solas, locked on to her then hid below the hill, since it was locked the final staff attack would always hit her then spam winter's grasp again then when it was below 100, solas pulls back, inquisitor comes in for the killing blow.. haha..

I can't remember on what level I beat this particular dragon (lvl 13 maybe) but my Dragon Slayer Party was Blackwall, Sera, Dorian/Solas (the choice depends on dragon's resisntences) and me as Knight Enchanter. With this party I actually slained all 10 dragons. The most difficult was in Emprise du Lion lvl 23 while I was lvl 21-22, when in the end I stood alone against it but fortunately knight enchanter with Fade step and winter grasp is op.

I realize, as I read these forums, that I am a terrible gamer.  I have no mind for strategy, as evidenced by the fact that I never thought to use the either tactical cam, nor the behavior settings in the character record.  That being said, this dragon has destroyed me at least 15 times (I am only a level 8).  Maybe I should come back once I've put a few more hours and levels in and try out some new strategies.

It's a long battle, took me about 45 mins at about the same level. I was using the tactical camera. Here are my Dragon slaying tips:

+ Use 2 mages and 2 warriors

+ Attack the legs, assign 2 characters per leg, so  you are attacking only 2 legs (front legs). I assigned 1 warrior and 1 mage per leg.

  - That won't work. AI too dumb.

+ Position the 2 mages together, a distance away from the dragon. This will help prevent taking damage form the dragon most times and also let you cast barrier on them together, the same goes for the warriors.

  - That won't work. AI too dumb.

+ Prioritize the barrier spells for the warriors / also alternate the casting between the 2 mages

  - That won't work. AI too dumb.

+ When the dragon flies up, it's going to rain down fireballs at your party so in anticipation command your team to move to a spot on the map out of sight or out of the dragon fireballs

  - That won't work. AI too dumb.

+ Kill all the little dragonlings that keep spawning

  - That won't work. AI too dumb.

In the end the dragon would move to the top of the mountain in the middle (when it's life is low), follow it there and kill it

  - That won't work. AI too dumb.

Every strategy is nullified. If you disable all abilities on mages, they will eventually just get stuck and do a little dance, when they don't know where to go. This will happen after the dragon moves. If you assign targets to characters, they will get deleted (the targets), as soon as the character gets CCd. The dragon switches targets when it flies, so taking control of a character thinking you can dodge with that since that was the last that it targeted wont work unless you get lucky.

The only way to kill dragons in this game is by getting lucky. When the AI doesn't make mistakes and glitch out, the dragon isn't hard to kill, just long and tedious, but this game is a SP MMO after all, so should be expected. I killed North Hunter while at level 11. It jumped out eventually reaching a completely flat field, so the AI stopped glitching with the navigation and from there it was just boring 15 minutes of kiting. In that particular scenario, yes, you can utilize strategy and skill to make the use of that luck. Meh.

The gameplay in this game is same as in any MMO. Main thing are your levels. Except here you will also get screwed by AI. Weakest point of the game by far, although that rumour about the snowy french area and it being hard is false - the enemies in there kill quickly, but are small - so you don't have to rely on AI not screwing up. There is not a lot of space to navigate and you can CC enemies and draw them out one by one easily. You fight your party in this game, not enemies.

I used a lot of poison and my trusty bees to slay it. Same strategy worked on the second dragon I fought.

I killed the Frostback at level 9. It was long and hard but there is a trick to doing this.

First you need to run around in the first valley and use your rouge with the Hide ability. This will let you avoid the dragonlings and the dragon but he will still aggro on your teammates. You are not trying to even hit him at this point.

Then keep going until you find the pass at the back that leads to the new area.

After he gets tired of throwing fireballs at your teammates and you get to the back he should come and land in the back area.

This is when you switch to your mage. Make sure the mage has fire resistant gear and an ice weapon with ice spells..

Have everyone in your party run at the dragon and attack it. They will all die but this is just to keep him busy while your mage runs around him.

If you go around the dragon and towards the docks where the boats are there is a little crag of stone on the left that comes out and hooks around at the base of the big upper area in the middle. This crag is the key to beating the dragon.

If you position your mage correctly you should be mostly behind the stone crag but still able to fire past it. The dragons fireballs are very big and will hit the stones. Don't stand to close to them. You will be shielded and your frost shots will hit the dragon slowly tearing him down.

Also if the dragon is too far away for the targeting to appear, manually angle your shots carefully at the dragon. If they hit they will still do damage even though the small white plus is not visible indicating the auto targeting is helping you hit.

Occasionally he will go very close to the middle section and be in an angle where you can't use the crag for cover and still hit him. In this case just run out hit him with your heaviest yet fast spell and quickly duck back before the fireball.

Also, when you are behind the crag if your angle is right you won't be affected by the suction ability but you may want to try and anticipate it and run closer to the wall when he looks like he is about to use it.

Great overhead picture thanks to a glitch someone had.. The spot I am describing is in the red circled area.

Vivienne's knight enchanter skills really helped me with dragon fights when I finally learned how good she was. I was level 13 I believe when I fought that dragon and it was quite a challenge at that point. I hear the one in Crestwood is easier.

Totally agree, Vivienne a much under-rated companion - she rocks as KE.

The first time I fought that Frostback Dragon it was an epic 2 hour battle. I was level 11, my crew was still level 10. I had no specializations as I stupidly was trying to complete the hinterlands before moving on with the story(yeah I was one of those idiots). It was just me(a mage), Solas, Varric and Cassandra. I used that tactical view and formed a triangle around the dragon with my ranged characters, and sent Cass in to tank. I ran in whenever the dragon did its wing buffet thing as I had seen that on a vid I watched. A few stupid AI issues but I ground the dragon down slowing as my party was mostly defensively oriented. When the dragon got to the top of the hill, only Solas and Cass were still up. I had Cass engage and Solas run around ressing. I hadn't given him revive, I know stupid. Despite my poorly specced party, I still managed to bring that ****** down. Never had such a feeling of accomplishment in a Dragon Age game as that.

i really never tackled this dragon till i was lvl 13 and had already killed 2 dragons... even on nightmare, after fighting a few and getting the hang of battling them, they are incredibly easy to kill... the thing that usually hinders me a little bit is the dragons that call dragonlings...  my mages will go down in no time if i dont move them as soon as the dragon calls the dragonlings

Holy crap. I beat the dragon at level 4 (lv 4 inquisitor human warrior, lv 4 solas, lv 4 cass, lv 4 var) on normal difficulty.

I ran through the lair as my warrior using charging bull sacrificing them whenever necessary and then i hid in the top northwest of the lair of the main dragon and then used solas to fire magic at the dragon. It took ages woth my shitty solas attack, but yea, beat the dragon lv 4.

Im a bit of an idiot though and i dont know how to submit photos or videos in this forum. If someone could tell me how i would be more than willing to show you how i did it. Although it was filmed on an ipad...

On that level there is a rock i stood behind with Solas at level 10 and it blocked the flames from the dragon, and the vortex, but it took a long time to bring him down, but the dragon died after a while and still collected the treasures that were in that area. Just make sure you save potions, because those dragonlings can be a B****.

I did it with Iron Bull/Tank, Cole/Archer, Dorian/Barrier/necromancer, and my knight-enchanter on nightmare mode without any real crafted gear at level 12. Used healing mist grenade and bees as applicable. Cole spent about like 80% of the fight face down in the dirt, I really need to figure out how to keep him alive on these fights haha.

Most of the fight was Dorian struggling to stay alive, and then Bull and my KE keeping it right up in the dragons face the entire fight. When Dragonlings came out, I'd throw down barrier on my KE and then do my best to ****** all of them off before they shanked Dorian, and then Iron Bull would taunt them off of me when he felt like it.

Knight-Enchanter is cheating. But against this guy and his fire resistance, almost all of my fire-based build is useless so it was a lot tougher than it had to be.

Most of my potions and mist grenades were gone by the time the fight was over.

i'm really stupid. i kinda.. forgot about this dragon for a while? went in at level 16 so it was very easy lol. and it was SO stupid because i didn't get any XP from the high dragon. fortunately the dragonlings scaled to my level so they were level 15. so at least i got some XP.

anyway, i brought sera, iron bull and vivienne which worked beautifully. i'm really lazy, so i always autolevel my companions, and i hardly control them myself. i just had to move them out of the way sometimes because they tend to not move away from the fireballs and such. vivienne with ice magic and KE was awesome. played as a mage myself, with mainly lightening magic and some ice magic. also barrier. just barrier the **** out of this fight. also i crafted fire resistant armour for everyone and gave them increased health or fire resistant belts and amulets and stuff.

i also used the perk to get 12 health potions, and i equipped bull with the healing mist (because i had lyrium potions on me and viv, and jar of bees on sera) which helped a lot. in the end i think i took it down in 5-10 minutes? mainly because i was so ridiculously overleveled. i tend to put of the 'difficult' stuff because i'm so afraid of dying. i'll make my next playthrough more challenging ^^

Managed to kill it on Hard at Level 13, pre-Skyhold and without any specilisations.

I used a Mage Inquisitor, 2h Iron Bull and Sera and Varric as my archers, kitted out with fire resistance gear, bog-standard 8 health potions and 5 regen potions. Managed to go through the entire fight without having any of the party go unconscious, with only Iron Bull needing to use health potions, while myself, Sera and Varric needed only the odd regen potion.

(Barrier, Fade-Step, Evade and Charging Bull really are a god-send when it comes to avoiding/mitigating close-quarter attacks and when it's airborne.)

For someone who's only recently stopped being so much of a chicken to move up from casual/normal, I'm a tad chuffed with myself now.

Reading all these comments makes me laugh at myself. I beat the Feraldan Frostback last night with my warrior, Ferric, Solas, and Vivienne, all level 9. It was insanely difficult, and now I realize why. I probably should have waited another few levels before taking it on. How did I do it, you ask?

I died. Repeatedly. I finally parked my entire party up over the foothills, near the cave, and brought one mage over the hill at a time and just plugged away at it until the dragon's health was low enough and he flew to the top of the plateau. Once there, I ran my whole party up and bashed away at him as quickly as I could. It took me well over an hour.

The good news is, over that hour I finally learned how to use the tactical view and really position my party well. Unfortunately, by the time I learned how to do it, I was out of potions, my characters were all at 1/4 health, and I was really just hanging on out of stubborn pride. I'd have been better off restarting the mission and doing it right, but...meh. It's dead. I'm just glad to know it really was THAT hard, I don't just suck terribly at the game.

Oh, and I have to echo some of the complaints I've read, although I'm still loving the game. The AI can be terrible. If you let the AI control your party, every single onee of your companions will go and stand in the damn dragon's mouth and attack from there. They also are quick to enjoy the thrill of running to and standing in fires set by exploding dragon fireballs. That was what forced me to start using tactical view, to keep those idiots from committing suicide.

I am so so sorry guys, I win.

lvl. 9 with 1 character only xD.

I needed the ore so I needed to get rid of him. I went to the camp got on my horse, stuck to the left edge of the map until i got to where he lands. Then I sped as fast as possible across the map screaming as he's almost on top of me, and made my way to the mountain area where you can plant your flag, behind the wall so his fireballs dont hit me. I tried this about 2 or 3 times to figure out  a path where I dont get unmounted.

I made everyone hold position that way they dont move.

I had a mage go to a position at the edge of the hill where the fireballs hit the side and not me but I can still hit him. It takes like 20 min to kill but you can do it. all I had was an ice rod and ice magic.

If you overstep you can always shield yourself, or have someone that was behind the wall revive you.

I used Solas.
