I never imagined myself this crude but i dont see a great deal of attractiveness difference from the first image to the third. I'm assuming 'realism' and proportion would correlate to general attractiveness.

Honestly I was so impressed by some of the CC works people have done in the inquisitor pic thread to think this was even an issue though granted i could not make an passable male elf to save my life. I would imagine many of those players were doing it simply on intuition, but the question is if they were subconsciously using proportionality rules.

As I say in the first post, proportion doesn't correlate with attractiveness.

Great thread, particularly the information about noses. I have seen a lot of otherwise attractive/interesting faces "ruined" (too harsh of a word, but it's all I have atm) by ultra straight, thin, spindly noses with squished nostrils. It almost seems as though the creator wanted to de-emphasize the nose, but by making it so unnaturally thin they just made it stand out more.

The wide as the space between the eyes rule of thumb is a good one. If the nose isn't meant to be a focal point, don't make it skinnier or squished- make it proportionate to the face, so the eye "glides" right over it.

Just my two cents, and again, a wonderful thread. Thanks!

And some uglies to make us all feel a little better about our troubles:

Thank you for this thread Aleithian and other contributors. I started out with the "how to make a hot female/male inquisitor" videos by Girlplaysgames on YouTube, and something felt right about them but I couldn't put my finger on exactly why, and reading this thread it all makes sense.

The biggest flaw with the default faces is the eyes. They're too big, too close and too high. Place them lower, make them smaller and wider and the rest of the face adjusts itself by almost by instinct. The nose gets longer, meaning the moves closer to the nose and the chin has to be lower to compensate, and now you've got a good template to make fine adjustments.

These are great guidelines, with lots of great comments. It never ceases to amaze me (and those of you who might know / remember me from ME2/3 on the BSN will know I've had a lot to say about it in the past) how most CC systems ignore these principles and/or make them difficult to adhere to. DAI is a fantastic game, but its CC should have been much better than it is.

I've found it helpful to try to start with these principles, then deliberately violate them in subtle (sometimes not-so-subtle) ways in order to give my characters more personality. Departures from "average" proportions are a large part of what enables us to recognize people. BUT, if you don't start with the correct proportions, you're likely to end up with odd, disquieting distortions. My Cassila character, for example, varies in several ways from "correct" proportions, but, with the exception of the eyeline problem mentioned by the OP, it's all deliberate. One could argue that the eyes are too high, and that would be fair, but I felt it made her face more interesting. (photos here)

Agreed. I've made some fine-looking inquisitors.

However, even when I make plainQuisitors, I try to keep proportions in mind:

For me, the goal is to ensure that my character fits in the universe, and didn't walk in from some anime (though elves do apparently have large eyes).

Nice job OP but these rules can be broken, that said those rules are for humans, one quarter of the races in DA:I

I tend to break the rules on the other races.

I typically tend to just browse the forums and not post but I am glad that I found this thread.  There is some good advice here.

I've been trying to to create a female dalish mage for my next play through with mixed results.  I have had to restart and regen her face so many times to get her to look "right" but I think I am almost there.  My problem with her is still the lower third of her face.  When she isn't talking it looks ok but when she starts speaking it just looks "off."  I can't figure out if her mouth is too big or her cheeks and jawline are out of proportion.

http://youtu.be/5g5b-8MA08g

You can see her talking at about 0:39, 2:31, and 37:40 of this video.

and at 7:30 and 21:00 of this one

Any advice you can lend me to help fix the bottom part of her face would be great.  Thanks in advance.

The videos aren't loading very well on my pc at the moment for some reason. But from what I can see, I think her face is perhaps a bit flat and that's impacting her appearance from the front. It's also very thin, particularly the jaw, which may be offsetting the overall appearance. But if you check my most recent thread, Bioware just announced that they'll be adding the mirror of transformation to the game with the next patch, so you'll be able to edit her appearance in-game. So my advice is to wait until that patch is released to edit your character, and when that time comes if you're still having trouble, post some in-game shots of her from different angles for comment.

My 2 cents: her cheekbones are quite large in proportion to her jawline, which is extremely slender, and yet she also has a wide chin. I'd try widening the jaw, lowering/softening the cheekbones, and adjusting the chin, until harmony is achieved.

Also, I'd opt for a slightly longer/lower placed nose for a face of that length.

Thanks for the help.  I'm putting her on ice until the next patch.  Getting sick of fighting the pride demon. bleh.

Since we have the emporium I thought I'd ask for some help with touch-ups for my male elf.

He isn't conventionally attractive, but I like that about him, and he is masculine which I thought was an important trait for Iolan to have.

I do quite like him, but something seems wrong, perhaps the mouth or eye placements?

I have noticed two things since the patch, the jawline looks thinner for some reason, and the beard doesn't cover the top lip like it used too

makes it harder to create something decent

maybe its just me

Well I haven't been on the forum for awhile but I thought I'd return from time to time now that Black Emporium is out. I think we're all disappointed that it doesn't address the lack of hair, particularly for females, but at least we now have access to a complete editing resource. The addition of zooming and the new lighting are pretty helpful, but I'm surprised they didn't just add variable lighting options to the editor so we can test the appearance in different contexts. Hopefully they supplement the editor at some point with a few more options, including hair - but they seem to be focusing on MP predominantly...

It's a pretty solid start. Just looking at him I think the eyes are too high. Lower them and then perhaps lower the nose and mouth just a touch to approximate the eye - nose - mouth - chin proportions on the first post. You can then tweek to attain your own unique appearance (e.g. at the moment it looks like you're going for a long chin, so you may want to retain that by adjusting the default proportions). Feel free to post an updated pic afterwards :)

I haven't played with the jaw yet but I'd be interested to hear what others thought.

As for the beard, I didn't use them before so I can't just that either. But I've noticed that beards don't connect to sideburns properly on some hairstyles.

that's part of the problem, I had no problems before this patch, my avatar guy had it right, now when I try to recreate him, it just looks silly

Hmm. Well so far Bioware has only responded to the request for in-game editing (which is a request none of us should have had to make in the first place, since every CC game has had one for years). They have a bad history of responding to our thoughts on CC in other respects, so I wouldn't hold out hope. Even a "We acknowledge your thoughts and are looking into it" would be nice.
