Did anyone notice how strange the make-up options are for qunari? Even on the lightest setting I have a raccoon circle of gold eyeshadow around her eyes! It's either full circle or non existent.
Very irritating. ![]()

I have a question about the 'Jowls' setting - apologies if this has already been answered. What does it do exactly?! (From left to right and up and down). I can never quite tell exactly what its changing on my characters
Hey everyone. I thought you all might find this helpful, particularly those who might be struggling to create a "decent" face. The vast majority of human faces share the same basic proportions, and if you follow these general principles in your character creation you'll end up with far more realistic faces and better in-game facial animations. This is a rough guide based on statistical regularities in the human global population. Individual humans often vary somewhat from these general proportions - for instance, my own face doesn't obey (4). Many aspects of appearance are not be determined by these general principles, such as cheek placement and width, lip width, eye vertical size, brow type, forehead width, and complexion. Ultimately, the beauty of your character is dependent on your own taste, eye, and idiosyncrasies.
I've revised this first post in light of my experiments with my third character over the past day or so. The effects are often subtle, but I think the end result is far more balanced than my original (unmeasured) build. In particular, the eyes in the first build seemed too high, while in the new build the eyes are lower and more proportionate to the face (in-game).
Here are the eight basic principles of realistic facial proportion, adapted to the creation system:
1. The eyes sit at the vertical center of the head or just above, about halfway between the top of the skull (not the hairline) and the bottom of the chin.
2. The bottom of the nose (not the bottom of the nose tip, which can be angled however) sits halfway between the brow and the chin.
3. The ears stretch from the eyes to the bottom of the nose.
4. The width of the eyes is roughly 1/5 of the distance from outer ear to outer ear. In wider faces, this doesn't apply.
5. The eyes are one eye-width apart.
6. The width of the nostrils is the same as the width between the eyes.
7. The center of the lips is located 1/3 of the way down the distance between the bottom of the nose and the chin.
8. The width of the lips (from side to side) is roughly pupil to pupil.
Other than that, human faces vary widely. You can use measuring tape to measure these proportions without risking damage to your TV. Here's a graphic that can serve as a rough guide:

Obviously, there's no reason to think these are realistic proportions for qunari, dwarves, and elves. Really interesting qunari, dwarves, and elves could likely be generated if you change these basic principles. For instance, I imagine that dwarves tend to have longer chins than humans.
Here's the comparison of my third character:

This is exactly what I taught myself when I learned to draw at a much higher level. I drew a character face befor picking up this game hoping id create it. nope. Very cool post though.
Tried this again and it worked for me on one of the headshapes. I might actually play as Vikarus Trevellyan Warrior now.

Up-down jowls move the 'puffy' bits at the side of the mouth and under the mouth. So if you raise the jowl setting, your character will have puffy protrusions at the side of the mouth. Left-right jowl settings retract the portion of the cheek just beneath the cheekbone. An example of someone with prominent jowls is Peter Dinklage - it's what gives him the carved and protruding mouth.
So Bioware made a blog posts promising future 'content' and 'features' updates in response to fan requests. So, this is about the best sign we've had so far that they'll include new hairstyles in the game.
Also, unrelated, but regarding a character revealed later in the game...

Her lips are such a gorgeous plum colour. I was soooo sad when I couldn't properly re-create it.

I'm going to try. ![]()
I'm going to try.
It's definitely re-createable, I've seen others able to. It's just not rendering properly on either of my screens, sadly.
I nailed it this morning, but didn't write down the placement (or snap a pic). When I re-entered the makeup option, the game had glitched and placed the marker at the bottom right, in the black section. Sigh. Anyway, the color slider was at roughly 45 degrees, and the marker was somewhere on the right.
At this point, I'm kinda burned out on the CC. I need more hair options and control over the eyebrows to go farther than I have.
I hope hthey also ad a way to atleast grow a bead or get a haircut in your game so im not halfway thru when the new hairstyles come out. I saved my sliders with crude drawings on graph paper so I guess ill be able to quickly re create my charater

Totally unrelated note, but when I saw your username I thought it said 'thirdjihad'...

I like how she looks like a lost kid in this screen...LOL
And the test in animation: When you have the right proportions the most subtle movements all of a sudden matter 100x more!
I love and appreciate these tips. They are invaluable and it's wonderful that talented folks are willing to share their tips. I'm pathetic, though. I've tried holding up a tape measure to the screen and following these tips, but each view of your character is different, shows up as different sizes depending on what screen your'e on, etc. I really, really wish the cc was easier to work with. I've had a couple good ones but only at the expense of spending probably more time in the cc screen (with more than 20 different characters so far that I've started and deleted of every race) than actually playing the game. The only one I actually started playing the game with, while I have grown attached to, is still not who I wanted her to be (level 10 at the moment and STILL trying to periodically create one I ADORE and CONNECT WITH). The only reason i "settled" on her was just so I could start actually playing the game. I could easily see myself still all this time after the game came out trying to create the perfect character and not succeeding because of the difference in cc screen and cut scenes (which is where all my screenshots come from and how I get connected/attached to my character.)

You're in luck - Bioware's looking to add an in-game face editor in a coming patch. Check out my other thread. ![]()
And for what it's worth, I've totally burned myself out on the CC.
Hey Aleithian...do you have sliders for the character in your avatar? I am having SERIOUS issues make a human male that doesnt look like a mutant gorilla hybrid. ![]()

Yup. Check this link: http://forum.bioware...-cc/?p=17842202
Oh, and note that the number represent percentages of the slider bar. The first is vertical, the second is horizontal. It's how I record my sliders.
I've read through this thread and appreciate all the tips and facts about the CC. There's a lot more to it than I ever realized. Thanks to all the posters!
That said, I've come to the conclusion that it's next to impossible to make a female elf without a buck-toothed mouth. I keep making attractive and beautiful elven girls only to watch their mouths move like they need massive oral surgery. Does anyone have tips for how to get rid of the overbite? I've tried mouth size, jaw width and placement, jowl size, cheekbones, nothing seems to work. I'm trying the facial proportions suggestion from the thread's founder next.
There has to be a sequence to the adjustment of the faces but I can't figure it out.
My character's mouth set has a very obvious bucktoothed overbite. (Second from last, I believe. I have not seen ANYONE use it so far for their Quizzies) I used the jaw position and moved her lower jaw forward. Also, watch for your mouth size. Bigger mouth overall, bigger teeth. Her mouth animations don't look bad, I also plumped her lips a bit to give an illusion. With less-puckered lips the teeth will show a lot more.
She has a mouth like Jennifer Connelly/Megan Fox at this point.

You avoid it by using 'chin shape'. I think the left-right slider modifies overbite/underbite.
Glad this thread helped!
I'll go try that. I've got a head I really like but that mouth thing is driving me crazy. I wore a retainer for years to correct that problem with my own jaw so it hits home. I need to study the info on the eye placement some more too. Thanks Aleithian!
This thread is so great Aleithian, so helpful!
I have a question if anyone can answer, I am trying to re-create this character I love in pictures (author doesn't remember the sliders) and I am confused on something with the chin shape.
In picture one the chin looks slender:
http://tinypic.com/v...=8#.VItI7nte-N2
However in picture two (front view) it looks much wider.
http://tinypic.com/v...=8#.VItJLXte-N2
How would I achieve this? I am using the preset they could remember using, but I can't nail this chin down. Would it be slimming down the jaw or pulling the jawline back? Chin shape in or out? Maybe cheek shape? Any advice would be much appreciated (I have been trying so many times to get it right). ![]()
