*POSSIBLE QUEST SPOILERS*

Hi not sure if this has already been answered and if it has I do apologise  but I am currently doing the 'Before The Dawn quest from Cullen and I've just unlocked Emprise Du Lion using my 20 power but I can't seem to get to the area where the Before The Dawn quest markers are at the south of the map. Am I just being silly and need to do other things first and  I will unlock ways to get to those markers or am I right in feeling that giant cliffs are blocking my way for a reason and I'm missing a really easy way to get to the south of the map to carry on with his quest?

Any help would be a appreciated, I really want to carry on with the mission, just not sure I'm missing something really obvious.

Thanks, Josie!  :)

There's a section just beyond the village where you start in Empress Du Lion filled with red lyrium crystals and a few red lyrium Templars. If you are still working on destroying red lyrium shards for varric- there's one of those in that area. If you mark his quest as active it should bring you right to it. I also believe this can become a campsite if you clear out the Templars. There is a path through the cliffs in that section.

Side note: playing on normal in empress du lion- what is the best level to play this area on? I'm currently a level 12 but everything is 2 shorting me. I've resorted to playing as Vivienne for this whole area and killing enemies from vantage points on the cliffs, running away when the remainder of the enemies are dead until the party revives, saving, and then returning. Not for nothing but on just normal I feel I shouldn't have I resort to this...? At which point does it become easier to play this?

I've pretty much cleared out the storm coast and the hinterlands. I don't feel the fallow mire and the western approach adds a whole lot to the game (as in there isn't a whole lot of interesting quests there) but I'm also getting tired of getting slaughtered in the other areas... So yeah. Just wondering.

I believe I read that the recommended level for that area is 16, I'm level 13 at the moment and went back to a previous save because I was also getting slaughtered trying to fight those templars you mentioned. Thanks for the reply by the way, appreciate it  :)

Your welcome and thank you! Hope my directions were ok. Knowing it's a level 15/16 area I don't feel so bad about myself now lol. Just couldn't wait to complete that Cullen quest.

I am on the the part where it says to have agents locate Maddox but there is nothing on the war table about it. Do I need to progress further into the story for it to show up?

I have been searching for hours for a way past those damned cliffs.  Can you narrow down the way through, direction-wise relative to the camps and/or landmarks?  I have tried from both Sarhnia and Highgrove, with no luck.  The Templars are not a problem, I just cannot see any way through despite my best efforts.

This confused me also- the war table quest is actually called "Track down Samson." If you go to the Orlais side of the map- written on the actual map it says "Empire of Orlais" (NOT a quest marker - it is written on the map) the war table marker is almost on top of that writing (up and left of the writing/mark).

That being said: I have heard other players are experiencing a bug where the quest marker is not showing up. But I am not sure if it's truly a bug or there is just confusion because of the difference in quest names. This was my problem- I kept looking at the "track down Samson" war table quest thinking I had missed a step but I hadn't. It was there the whole time.

It seems like you've opened up a little of the map if you are talking about Sahrnia. Did you liberate the Bone Tower yet? If you have the bone tower, go down the wooden spiraling ramps and follow those directly north. I think the path continues as wooden ramps. (Not east over the bridge to Suledin keep.)

I can not do it right now but if you are still stuck later I will try to do a run through from the beginning camp to the quarries and screen shot the area map showing my path for you.

No I hadn't found much else... to be honest, I was only looking for a way to accomplish Cullen's quest.  I had no real interest in the rest of the quests on this map.  If I have to do more, I might just let it languish, as I find the map very frustrating to navigate and nigh-impossible to explore beyond the Highgrove and Sahrnia camps.  Everything else is sealed off.  I've wasted hours trying to find ways out of the little center section of the map.

EDIT:*** okay ignore everything I said before about North and east I guess it's more like south west but clearly I'm bad with directions.

Go to the Sahrnia campsite- there is a small under pass that walking into causes "Alphonse Passage" to flash on the screen. This is the name of the caves that will lead you through the cliffs. The rest of the path is pretty linear.

Well I have the map with the trail leading from Sahrnia but I can't figure out how to post it in this forum.  Keeps telling me I don't have an acceptable file ext.

Ah I found it. It wasn't marked as new, that's how I missed it. Thank you.
