The AI is RETARDED. Never matter before with the tactical menu. I thought that was DAI's big thing? Being, you know, TACTICAL?! Well, where the hell are the TACTICS?! That was like Bioware's big cool thing with their companions in DA's combat, to remove it makes absolutely no sense.

Yep. Pretty bad move if you ask me. I can't see why they would remove it; it makes so little sense. Only reason I can come up with is that they probably didn't have enough experience with this engine yet to properly implement it, or they didn't have enough time.

Provide the power to the players to play however they want.  Keep the current system in place for those who want to play on medium and easy.

What is truly baffling is that these tactics are already in place and built into the game.  Just watch your AI go to work.

Removing them was an utterly dreadful decision. Completely and utterly mind bogglingly stupid.

PLEASE BIOWARE. GIVE US BACK TACTICS!

Really have had it with the AI in this game. Am playing on Hard with a mage and try to protect my tank as much as possible, only to see Varric run right into the middle of combat, using all but two healingpotions, and finally die. Leaving two healthpotions for me to use.

Some very simple if -> then tactics would prevent a lot of this happening.

The so called tactical view is so stupid that it doesn't even give you a proper top down view... It's too damned close.

And try to get the characters to take potions... Half the time the damned icon is greyed out because the character is doing other stuff. Guess Bioware didn't want to let us stack orders like a real commander would do. Incrementing time second by second making sure the mage Artificial Idiots aren't running up to the damned dragons and hitting them is half my work... Hold position keeps resetting it seems.

I love the exploring but Bioware AI has to be their weakest point. If the weren't all suffering from bloody premature senile dementia....if I want them to attack a specific leg they should keep doing that.... But I keep finding them running in to hit it in the mouth. Idiots.

tl;dr Tactical camera is TOO LOW and AI keeps forgetting. Needs to at least let us stack commands. Preferably bring the origins combat back... Was much easier to use.

This x1000. The normal view is too close, the tactical view is even worse. :/

Badly implemented tactical cam, retard companion ai, no tactics menu. They could as well make it a single character game. Why have a party if you can't make it work?

Oh yeah, I seem to remember an ESSENTIAL combat setting... Combat distance... Did you want the character to be ranged or close in. Where the hell did that go? I keep finding mages actually hitting dragons with what is actually A BLOODY WOODEN POLE.

PLEASE fix the combat system Bioware. I love the game but hate the damn AI.

This !! I really need the tactics back. I have had enough seen Solas fight close range with enemy warrior and squashed him with his shield.

But the console players won't like actually having to spend time developing their tactics. DA: I has most certainly been simplified to appeal to console gamers, and stuff like tactics is a prime example.

I agree with absolutley everything here.

However, I find that I'm not having a terrible time without them. Sure I feel like I have much less control over my party, but it seems the game is playable without the old form of Tactics. My suggestion is play around with the current "tactics". I was able to find a nice balance that lets me play the game mostly unhindered.

Disclaimer: I would LOVE the old tactics back, but it would almost feel closer to auto pilot instead of what it is now where I actually have to do slight work.

It has nothing to do with consoles, but frostbite or maybe a strange gameplay decision.

I am a console player to the bone, and I am hugely disapointed at the lack of old if-then tactics and GTFO-melee behaviours

I'll throw my support behind regaining the old Tactics system, I really loved the synergy you could get with it in the past 2 games.  The more I play DAI the more I'm getting used to the new system but I'm still doing much more babysitting than I'd like.  The beauty of the old way was that it truly allowed you to experience a game as the class that you selected at the beginning instead of having to essentially be everyone as soon as combat begins.

Yes, I'd love to see proper control over tactics given back to the player.

As it is, I've found that I can make my team perform...adequately, on normal, if I make my tank follow me, and everybody else follow my tank, with a mage set to protect the tank.

Given that I'm an archer, the tank following my targeting isn't always optimal, as I have to be careful as to what I target - if I want to pick off someone across the battle field from where my tank is, I can do it if I can take them down quickly, without causing my tank to start running to the other side of the battle field.

I tried to make my tank follow herself, which is essentially "target nearest", but I found that that didn't work as well as having her follow me.

Were I playing on the harder difficulties, I'd be missing the proper tactics options even more.

And if we don't get back the origins and DA2 style tactics customization, then AT LEAST give us the option to set whether we want a character to act as a "ranged" or "melee" character. Mages, under the control of the AI, simply don't know to keep out of harms way.

The biggest problem I've had was warriors frequently refusing to attack even though an enemy is a few feet away shooting arrows at us... if they get too far away they tend to turn around and stand there facing me with their backs to the enemy.  It's really odd...

Anyway, I agree.  The new, simplified system is pretty clunky at times, especially compared to how well the old one worked.  The computer just doesn't make good decisions most of the time, so it's best to go into tactical mode and walk the party though the more challenging fights.

I've found that it helps to set them to "prefer" using 1-2 abilities, with the rest either enabled or disabled depending on what you want them to do... that way the AI will at least tend to follow some rules with how it behaves, and won't get confused with having too many abilities to choose between.

I hate fighting dragons... Every time I find my stupid archer UNDERNEATH THE DAMN THING when I clearly told them to stay at range. Yeah, the wing move draws them in but when its over they should move to their holding position again. . and they FRACKIN DON'T!!!!!

Tactics from a commanders point of view is give the troops commands and then let them do it while you help. This has all the hallmarks of micro management at its worst. And then to limit the so called "overhead tactical view" to the height of your character is total bollocks.

I have almost thrown my controller through my TV so many times because I couldn't aim at what I wanted due to the tactical view getting stuck on invisible walls.

1. Raise the limit of the tactical view height to at least 2x current so that we can get a proper tactical overhead. Give us the option to manually raise the camera.

2. Just give us the old tactics system back. Change does not always equal improvement!

Varric has always been the one to act like an idiot during combat, even in Origins.

What he said.

Tactics intentionally dumbed down to appeal to the average console gamer.

Same reason all non-combat skills and stat point allocation were removed.

Y'all do realize that the combat system blows just as many chunks in the console version(s) as it does in the PC version, right?

Of course you do.

I've never understood this argument.

Playing on PS4. Would like the tactics back as much as anyone else.

The game being on a console has nothing to do with a bad design decision.

The exploration part of the game is great... Its a shame there are no climbing ropes like the included in Far Cry 4 and the combat is fine for the lower level enemies. But when you go up against tougher enemies you have to play nanny to all the characters and then you have to fight the best interface as much as the enemy.

Greyed out health potions because the character doing something else and you can't interrupt, idiots trying to kill the dragon by shoving their head down the dragon's throat, glitching invisible walls stopping you targeting, etc, etc. Why do the QA peeps miss things like this???
