What exactly does disrupting a Rift do in the middle of combat? I've noticed weaker enemies dying upon finishing one of the green blasts, but they don't seem to give exp. Bosses and such are stunned, which is nice, but not for nearly as long as you spend standing around letting them beat on your companions to achieve that effect.

Can someone explain the idea behind all this?

Nothing more than what you've seen. Weaker enemies dies, stronger enemies gets stunned. Useful when playing on higher difficulties =)

I made a post about this earlier, and basically, the surge from the blast seems to do a bunch of damage and stuns.  But you have to hold it while you get the audible buildup, hoping your party can keep the trash mobs off you.  I saw a rage demon take 500+ damage in one blast.  I'll take all I can get.  And the poster above is right...playing on Nightmare, you need every mathematical edge you can find, so if you're surrounded, getting one of these surges can be enough to put you over the top.
