I have yet to figure out what "Focus" is, and more importantly, how it works. Is this something that I should be managing in some way, or is it a passive effect?

It's an additional resource used to cast each specialization's Focus Abilities. The natural maximum is 100 focus, and used to cast tier 1 abilities. There are perks that increase the maximum focus to 200 and 300, allowing you to cast tier 2 and tier 3 abilities, respectively. Focus is gained while dealing damage, and each member of the party has its own focus bar.
Focus/specializations/focus abilities are unlocked after reaching Skyhold so you may not be at that point yet.

Oh, I see. And yes, you're right...I haven't unlocked them. I just kept seeing reference to Focus, including a ring that buffs it. No wonder I couldn't figure out what they were. Thanks. I'm just clearing the Oasis, and then I'll be doing the quest to unlock Skyhold.
