I see 8 ability slots for casting and use. However,:

1. Can I get more than 8?
2. If yes, can I use more than 8? 
3. If answer to question 1 is yes, can I either swap out abilities or have room for more than 8?

You can use only 8 abilities in combat, and You can't swap them in combat. Bit if You have more then eight You can decide the ones to put in the slots.

The eight ability limitation is somewhat mitigated by the large number of passives.
