I'm thinking that maybe the Darkspawn taint was originally created by the Elven Pantheon as a viral weapon against the Old Gods but it ended up infecting them first (save for Mythal and Fen'Harel) in order to prevent the Taint from spreading in the Fade, Mythal or Fen'Harel locked up the rest of the Elven gods in the Golden City, the city being a sort of quarantine prison, eventually turning the city into Black. Dumat and the rest of the Old Gods didn't know what's up, so Dumat seduced Corypheus and co. to try and enter the City in order to find out what the Elven Pantheon was up to, only to infect the Mages which accidentally lead to the coming of the Darkspawn Taint into the physical world, which also lead to Dumat and the Old Gods tainting with the virus.
