How do I switch to using a controller on the PC, from keyboard and mouse? I saw an option under controls in Options, but it is locked. It says that I have to be using a gamepad.

Is your gamepad connected to the PC? If not, go ahead and plug it in.

You need a game controller (with its software installed) plugged into your computer BEFORE you launch the game.
That option should no longer be grayed out at that point

You also have to do it from the main menu for some reason. So...have fun with that.

I don't understand. I did plug in the controller before starting the game, using a USB slot. It shows up in my printers and devices window working just fine. The game should be detecting it and working.

you can only switch while in the main menu. Once you load your save game, its locked out, you cant switch on the fly.. I hope they will release a fix so you can switch on the fly whenever you want.

Anyone tried both?

Is the controller preferable? I'm curious because I find the mouse and keyboard somewhat cumbersome this time around. And I have a controller ready to go on my desk I use for other games.
Anyone tried both?
I've switched from K+M to a controller and found the controller much, much better. I couldn't stand playing with K+M--the controls were way too clunky for me.
The main issues for K+M is that you have to hold down either the mouse button or F (or whatever you mapped the key to) to keep attacking, whereas it feels a lot more natural on the controller to hold the trigger key. Also, K+M doesn't allow you to loot something by clicking on an object from far away, so running up to an object felt a lot nicer with the controller. Plus the entire UI is made for the controller (e.g 8 usable talents at a time, rotating wheel for selections).

Sold! Even though it feels almost sacrilegious to plug a controller into a Dragon Age game on the PC....

This is why you have to switch on the main menu. Switching input devices basically gives you a different version of the game.

I honestly cant tell of you are serious or mocking us pc gamers, like a sort of pc gaming Colbert.Need to use a xBox 360 for PC controller, once you install the controller DAI becomes a far superior game PC game than the dirt console version.
Either way, please stop.

I did get it work, thanks for your help. I tried the controller for awhile, and I didn't like it. One problem is that I didn't see any way to take the healing potion, nor whatever other potion that you have extra. I am sure there is a way, I just couldn't find it. More importantly, my thumbs felt they were getting overworked. I think if I kept it up, my thumb muscles would have gotten really tired. Also, it felt really awkward to me, probably because I am so unfamiliar with the controller.
So I ended up going back to KB&M. From another thread, I found out how to do an entire fight in Tac mode, and I am starting to like it. It seems to be working out great, so far. I am taking less damage. I wish the KB&M controls were far better, but from my POV, it is still better than the controller.

There's things about each interface I like and dislike.

I switched to controller. I prefer it for right now. A few patch tweaks, and we'll try k&m again, but for now, this works.

Agree but, trust me, you get over it pretty quickly. Controller is clearly the native control input for this game. As it is I can't see any advantage to kbm other than clicking on bads in tac cam.Sold! Even though it feels almost sacrilegious to plug a controller into a Dragon Age game on the PC....
Funny thing, after I played on controller and got used to the new combat mechanics etc, I went back to KBM and found it wasn't so bad. Learning new mechancs with a UI that actively conflicts with muscle memory probably exacerbated some folks issues with the game.

Tried the controller last night. It could be that my muscle memory isn't there yet, but man it made my hands tired. There's so many weird things and it almost feels like too much to do during combat.
- Hold R2 to auto attack
- Press left bumper to bring up Radial menu for potions and attack orders
- Hold L2 to switch spell sets
- Right bumper and face buttons are all the skills
- Lock on with right stick click?
I dunno. ****. I felt totally overwhelmed and tired after a fight with a few wyverns. I'm 50/50. I did like how movement felt, and looting, and god damn does the tac cam work a lot easier with the controller.
Also, why is fast forward time only available on the controller? That'd be amazing with KBM.

I love being able to kick back and play DAI with a controller on my PC.

The KBM Tac Cam works really well once you get used to the camera controls.I did get it work, thanks for your help. I tried the controller for awhile, and I didn't like it. But I don't like reclining. I want to sit upright.
So I use a desk amd KBM.
I watch TV and movies the same way - sitting at my desk watching on my computer.
I'll happily sleep on a couch, but I never want to sit on one.

Two byproducts I'm on the fence about: (1) now I'm running very, very quickly like an irresponsible adventurer and (2) the feedback is seems incongruous. Why vibrate sometimes? Is it a critical hit notification?
