So I guess it's safe to say Mike Laidlaw wasn't being honest with us on the game's length.

(Do not mistake me, I love DA:I. But I wanted to address this.)

Bioware was right about the game being huge, and that doing everything could take a very long. But Mike Laidlaw was completely full of it when he said the game would take 50 hours if we ignored every sidequest. Remember this?

http://www.pcgamer.c...arc-at-e3-2014/

I know most of us thought he was exaggerating. But this isn't exaggerating. Exaggerating would be if he inflated the real truth by about 10-15 hours. But he's off by at least 30 hours. That's just flat out misinformation, to put it kindly.

I appreciate the great game that Mike and his team brought us. But come on now.

yeah, he basically outright lied about it. The main plot can be completed in 10-15 hours

Depends on whether you consider the companion quests to be "Story" or "Side".    Also, kind of a meaningless statement because you can't ignore the side quests entirely.  You need a hundred something power from somewhere.  Not to mention the xp and crafting stuff to make good gear.

Must say there's no denying it, based off of that info on my first play through I thought something was up when i completed my first play through in 51 hours and had done a lot of extra stuff :S still an awesome game though, they probably felt they had to butter people up after DA2 widespread unhappiness when really they could've safely relied on the merits of inquisition.

It's sort of like how long a hypothetical phone's battery life lasts, isn't it? How often did you use it, what did you do, etc.

Videogame length and world scope tends to be empty marketing guff that pleases people, even though it *is* more or less meaningless. The Witcher 3 is going to be 20% bigger than Skyrim, whatever that ultimately means to you.

This game is enormous however, and its ambitious.

Well, the thing is you can't skip all the side quests due to power requirements. I did just about the bare minimum to advance the story (10 excess power at the end), did about half the companion/advisor content and didn't skip any dialogue. Ended up at about 45 hours, so part of it is what you "count" I guess.

DAO can be completed in 35 minutes by speedrunners and I have never seen anyone complain that the dev lied about how long it takes to finish it...

I challenge anyone to complete the game in 10-15h.

If you say the story missions take about 10-15h, i guess that could be true. Complete the game in that few hours is possible as proven already by some reviewers, but only if you skip the companions quest (which to me counts as main story aswell cause it all fits into the story you are playing) and cut throught the dialogues. To me thats not completion, thats not even gaming, thats just rushing thru to see a 10h movie. If thats what you're looking for then go watch all 3 movies of Lord of the Rings in a row. Gaming is not for you I guess... Or Roleplaying gaming for that matter.

I dont get it. Why call someone a liar with arguments like what you've given. It just helps destroy your own coherence, not the person your accusing....

Agree with OP. I skipped whole zones because I had more then enough power to continue the story. I finished level 17, and it was an easy end game too. I expected Cory to at least put a fight as good as he did in DA2.

Now I also know, by skipping zones I skipped a lot of good stuff. I'll be running through it again. This I won't bother much with the main story line until I have too. Most of the really good stuff is in the side stories. Plus I only killed one dragon. There are 12 or so?

Honestly, I do not care. Developers and publishers lie all the time, its just business, people who buy games are just lifeless robots with money to be taken to game devs, whether they be bioware, cdprojekt red, or even an indie dev. At least bioware actually made a good game, yeah he was lying, but at the end of the day, why care? There is enough sidequests and companion quests to keep you entertained, the length of just main story does not matter, because if you only play the main story and nothing else, then why the hell would you play an rpg?

Couldn't care less what the 'main' quests take.   A playthrough for me is a COMPLETE play through.    There is no skipping of quests, or even conversations.   For the look of it a playthrough is going to take me 150 hours.

This game would be not very fun to do in 15 hours. Skipping out on all other things

Pfft. People making speedruns just to be able to post comments like this. I think if you play at a reasonable pace, the statement might be more or less correct. Also, such statements assume an average pace. Of course as an experienced gamer, you'll be able to finish it faster, but where's the fun in that?

So what is the main plot to you?

And what is the main plot to Mike Laidlaw?

Or me?

I think the issue stems moreso from again, what actually is considered the main plotline. That is again a very determinist attitude.

nowhere near close to 50 hours even doing the required side quests to get the minimum amount of power necessary to complete the game

Was a real shame for me that the main storyline was so short, but still am getting alot of time out of the side quests and exploration so thankfully that saved Inquisition for me

I bet if you put the game on casual or normal you could do it in ~7-8. The story is incredibly short

It would be true if they'd doubled the power cost of everything.

I get the feeling that they might have massively reduced power costs at the last minute. Even casualish players are ending with 100+ spare power, which is just daft for what's supposed to be a hard-won resource.

I think it's more about what he meant there.

In the Prima book foreward, Laidlaw says he was tasked with creating a game that could scale from 10-100 hours, that molded to the player experience more then ever before, and I think he accomplished it. I would be surprised if the average playthrough of the "story" (not chasing every little sidequest) was less than 50 hours.

At any point, did he say there were more than 50 hours of main story missions - this, to me, is different than saying it has basically a 50 hour story, but scales up to 200. 200 sounds a bit much, but maybe on Nightmare.

On Nightmare using the awful PC tactical cam you could probably hit 400 hours...  ;)

It took me 47 hours and 58 minutes to complete the main quest. (counting companion quest and side quests to get power). There's still plenty for me to do after the game so I'm happy with the length.

I didn't speedrun, and it took me 83 hours to complete main storyline plus many many side quests. I needed those to level up, and just got plain distracted.

I just want to repeat that Laidlaw specifically said if you skip "all" the side content. I'm betting

Of course he was lying. They're all liars.

You can generally cut the estimated time to complete by nearly half and be right. I'm at about 17 hours and my next quest is the 40 power one (Elvin ruin), which I'm pretty sure is close to the end.

I wouldn't call him a liar. This game isn't meant to be completed in under 20 hours.
