I've noticed that Cass has guard a lot of the time, and I assume it comes from Shield Wall.  Does anyone have any good strategies for using enemy numbers to create a ton of guard?

My warrior is Iron Bull but Cassandra should probably have Guard on all the time. As you noted, bunch them together  .. War Cry. With passives giving bonus to Guard its set. If not possible or boss .. Shield Wall. Cover her back. In tactical, however, execution varies by encounter, enemies and environment. I used to send her ahead alone, alternatively kite with her in order to bunch up.

Shield Wall, honestly. AI uses it expertly. Fiddle around with Tactics to make sure your melee uses primarily that.

I'll do that.  I'll make it her preferred, and then leave the others as regular.  Do you find that the warrior is one that you can pretty much leave alone to take care of herself/himself?  I was thinking of setting Solas to always "defend" the warrior in hopes that he would also keep a barrier on her.

Sadly Defend wont ensure Solas always keeps barriers on the tank. They'll do it more often then not just due to the warrior taking dmg more often but the AI can be extremely stupid in that regard. Also, other skills will sometimes get used, consuming there stamina to much for Shield Wall. Ultimately I tend to make sure Cass just uses Shield Wall and almost nothing else. For instance, Lung skill works fine since she only uses it to close distance. But Pay Back? She'll use that anytime shes taken dmg, which... is... like all the goddamn time. And if you heavily limit stamina reserve she wont shield wall often enough.

I really hope they update to allow 'target' to not just involve party members. And hopefully add more to the Follow/Defend. Also, wtf is the difference of follow and defend? It's not explained anywhere and I haven't seen a difference in basic testing. I would love a basic support one where they'll prioritize Barrier on the 'target' more often then anything else.

Crafting better armor will do far more for your survivability than messing around with Guard. Just make sure to pick up the +20% armor when you have guard on.

I may try turning everything off but Shield wall and maybe War Cry, so that she'll spam both.  I find that when things go bad, it's mostly because the tank is in trouble.  If I can keep Cass or Blackwall buffed with guard, the rogues and mages have more time to operate with all that heavy damage.

Yeah Black Lot Basher, a lot of that is positioning too. AI will often get surrounded, even when theres only 2 enemies, if you wait around and watch they often end up with 1 of them almost completely behind them due to the whole positioning thing. Enemies shuffle A LOT compared to past games, it's kinda crazy. Rolls useful if your the tank just so you can keep repositioning, but yeah the AI is gonna get surrounded.

I have all skills except Shield Wall disabled on my tank, so AI is never caught with its pants down and reliably catches almost every hit. I don't really use it for damage, just quick swap and manual taunt/stun when necessary.

Shield Wall and war cry. also there's this ability upgrade to walking fortress (champion specialization) that generates guard as you are hit.
