does it matter what chests you open?

So far, I've only noticed that large chest give more cards.

I reckon that they also provide greater chance for a rare item or a character card, or a higher level item.

I'ts a bit less straight forward as opposed to ME3, where I went with recruit packs till I got all common cards, then veteran for silver and spectre for gold.

Or at least I haven't noticed any solid pattern yet.

I don't think there's a difference in quality between the loot chests, large chests are just slightly more efficient when it comes to items per gold.

That said, no one actually knows if there's a difference in loot quality, so it's mostly just conjecture at this point.  Medium chests net you your items slightly sooner, but end up being slightly more expensive.  Buy whichever chest you like more.

What I'm currently doing is running 2x Threatening and grabbing 1x large, 1x medium 1x small after the 2nd operation is finished.

Whereas Large has far more quantity, Medium from my experience seems to have more quality (this is personal experience and shouldn't be taken as gospel)

I've so far pulled most of my better loot out of medium chests, but got far more matts from salvageable stuff from the large chest.

i got a lvl16 rare bow from the small chest when i first started. and thats the only one i have ever had since, but tbh since then i have been buying large chests only. i have had others rares but they are all sub lvl10 items which are worse than all of my common items. no uniques yet for me :(

The chance seems totally random, though I think I've had more unique items (Purples) from the small chest

The cost of the items/potions for the chests is

Large Chest: 1 Item + 1 Potion = 240 Gold(x5 = 1200 Gold)

Medium Chest: 1 Item + 1 Potion = 241* Gold(x3 = 725 Gold)

Small Chest: 1 Item + 2 Potions = 270 Gold(x1 = 270 Gold)

Healing Potion Crate: 1 Healing potion = 50 Gold (x5 = 250 Gold)

Mixed Potion Crate: 5 Random Potions = 50 Gold (x5 = 250 Gold)

If you're short on potions and you don't want to spend gold on the potion crates, buy the small chests for a bit, you get an additional potion for only 30 gold each

(Large = 5 Items, 5 Pots @1200g +5 Potions from crate @ 250g = 1450g - Small = 5 Items, 10 Pots @ 1350g - A saving of 100g)

dat RNG.

I've received decent weapons from both medium and large chests.  I recall when I first started the MP, and bought some large chests, but then went to medium.  I got some decent items from them (purple battle axes, 100 dps staff), and seems to be a bit better drop for me in the mediums vs the large.  I have received a purple and some decent blues from large too, but less overall than the mediums.

I would like to point out, large chests have been giving me 4 items instead of 5 on occasion.  I havent seen this occur with med chests though, so with that factored in it might be better just to go with med chests.

I always stick with the large chests since technically they are most cost efficient, by a small margin.  Wonder why they didn't stick with ME3's loot chests.  The more expensive chests were guaranteed to give rares and were the only ones that even had a CHANCE to give uniques like new classes (akin to new armors in this game).  It SIGNIFICANTLY motivated the player to stick it out and earn that money to be able to afford those chests.  Now it doesn't really matter what you get.  Would be nice if there was a chest similar to what I just mentioned, or hell, maybe even just one that doesn't have any potions and had slightly more items.  Maybe something like a "royal" chest that costs 1500 gold and gave 7 or 8 items, 0 potions.  Considering there are potion boxes that ONLY give you potions, there should really be chests that ONLY give you items.  Balance, motivation, intuitive design...all things this games loot system needs more of.

So, if I understand this correctly, 1 potion + 1 item costs roughly the same between a Medium and Large chest?

If so, if you are running threatening is it not more feasible to cash out on med every run to, for lack of a better term, maximize your items per minute?

Yep that's right. Personally I've been doing the small ones so I can get more regen/Healing splash potions etc

Won't that give you something you don't need like Rock Armor potion instead of healing?

It can give healing or any other kind of potion, tonic or grenade :)
