I've tired to play mages in both DA:O and DA II but gave up both times as I just get my butt kicked from here to the fade!  I have no problems playing tanks, two handed and with daggers (never tried an archer) but I would like to play a mage at least once.  So any advice how I can do this reasonably well in DA:I?  Thanks for any advice you might have.

Can you offer a bit more information please?

You say you get your butt kicked, how, when, etc?

Who do you have in your party

What level are you, what level are you fighting and what type of mob

The more detail you can offer the easier it is to understand where you are going wrong.

Well I haven't tried yet in DA:I yet just the other two games and never could finish either one with a mage. So I guess what I need to know is if I wanted to play one in DA:I what advice could people give me ie. Build, best party members etc. Especially what is the best strategy to play them. Dose that help any?

On which difficulty did you play a mage on the previous two games?

Did everything in DA:O and DA:II with a mage and when you have the right squad (one tank, one healer and one rogue with daggers and you with a lot of AE attacks and optional some healing) you're golden. Too pity this doesn't work very well in DA:I due to the poor AI, the lack of tactics to set, the absence of healing spells and the common pool used for healing potions.

Best advice I can offer is planning.

Make sure you know what type of mage you want to be so you can spec to it and choose complimentary companions for it..

On a more general basis

  • Make sure you stay at range
  • Check for immunity messages and have a couple of staves for different damage types (most of your skills will adapt)
  • Spec into Barrier for those "oh ****" moments
  • Learn what your skills do and experiment to apply them correctly

Mages in DAO is ridiculously OP

Mages in DA 2 is bit more balanced, but still very strong

in DAI you need to pick a role for your mages

1. DPS : Roll with fire and Lighting, use direct damage spells and DOT's, pick Necromancer or Rift mage as spec

2. CC : pick Lightning and Ice

3. Support : choose Spirit tree, max barrier

4. Melee/tank : choose Knight enchanter spec, you can solo the game with it

5. Fast CD/fast regen : Rift mage/Fire

Is anyone role better than another for a mage beginner?

Knight enchanter as a Melee

It's pretty much fool proof you can quite literally spam spirit blade and effectively solo the game (dragons included).

It can be rather... boring. Personally I like playing a fire/necro build, the damage is just completely ridiculous and doesn't require you to abuse just 1 ability.

How ridiculous is the necro/fire mage? Fire KE is just crazy, I can clear out mobs by just 1 combo of Fire mine, fade cloak and arcane blade.

Well KE sounds like it might be a good place to start and see if I can make it through one game as a mage. At what point do you get these specialties? I'm only about 15 hours into my first game and only level 7 or 8.

mage is pretty versatile;

Knight Enchanter+spirit makes you tanky and when combined with fire gives you insane damage dealing capacity.

its the "dragon soloing build" and also gives you decent melee combat options.

Rift mage gives you powerful extra control and debuffs but offers nothing for survivability (but the CC spells themselves help you temporary hold off attackers) but has great synergy with all trees really, it is also ideal for managing FF if you have it on.

Necro I havnt tested much myself, but tbh it seems it doesnt offer much more than raw dot based dmg and combo setups.

as to what to combo things with, frost gives you the best control of battle and with it best survivability, fire is the best damage A full barrier fire mine does the highest dmg numbers I seen to far in the game (6k+ crits with combos/debuffs), lightning offers lower but steadier dps with passive build in CC (stuns/paralyzes) and debuf (magic vulnerability), spirit is pretty much them ust have support tree, and the base for the mage bread and butter barriers.

Really with the mage the goal is to not get hit - sorta a big no duh moment obviously. I've gotten to the point where I don't even barrier myself. The key to the mages isn't the mage but your warrior(s) and getting them to suck up all the aggro and keep your free to flit about and cast spells. I usually use 2 warriors and they are more than good enough to keep the attention of everyone drawn to them by prioritizing War Cry and Challenge and I just sit and snipe away with any spells. Really the KE is being recommended but the mage will play wholly different pre- and post- specialization whereas a Rift/Necro will give you a more consistent playthrough.

Best method is armor and weapon mods to boost magic and will power then select a skill to optimize.

The strongest core spells imo excluding specs:

Static cage /w upgrade + energy barrage and get flash-point passive from the fire tree for static->double barrage combo.
Fade step.

Fire wall /w upgrade

OR
Fire mine /w upgrade
