If anyone is still interested: I've found the Dwarven Longsword schematic in the Storm Coast cave that's unlocked during the
I'm pretty sure it's random but with a bit of reloading you might get lucky.

I have the exact same problem. Good longswords are unheard of in Thedas, apparently.
Now, the Dwarven Longsword is what I want, definitely. Can we have more information on where to find that schematic?
Is the hissing waste the best place for it, save scumming the chests?

"With a bit of reloading, you might get lucky" <--- this games schematics shouldn't be random drops. It's just wild BS that line of thinking even has to exist. I really hope they add in some merchant that just SELLS schematics. I just kept expecting something to happen that would get you access to more stuff, but instead we get this barely anything to buy, and what you can buy is the middle of high end.
Outside of bugs, this is my biggest gripe (only real major one, really). Hell if nothing else the War/Rogue/Mage equipment perk in inquisition should unlock the high end schematics of all that stuff you know? Make that damn thing 'worth' something. Also kinda wish there wasn't such a shift in dmg/armor with schematic and it was just materials used but that's something else all together different.
As for OP, that's basically the answer - it's random. There is no merchant I know of that sells exactly what you want, or what I want for that matter. You can get something that, mechanically fits your role, such as a 1H axe but if you want to stick to a specific type of weapon cause 'reasons' the game isn't really helping with that.

I don't think that RNG drops are a problem, they're actually a big plus in wide and open RPGs since you have the chance of getting different stuff in each new playthrough.
What poses a problem though, and on that I agree, is that there aren't more merchants selling good schematics.
The game severely lacks weapon and armor variations anyway and I do hope that something like a minor mod will build upon that flaw.

What exactly does that Warrior/Mage/Rogue equipment perk actually do? I know what it says it does but I've yet to see any difference in what Skyhold's merchants are selling.

Vary dissappointed that every weapon is so easily obtainable but the longswords. I've never stopped using the longswords of the Dragon where are all the swords at. And why does this game want me to use a 1h axe so much

UPDATE
So to anyone who wants a Tier 3 Longsword schematic, last night I made it to the Hissing Wastes and found a chest I could appropriately save scum (it was on the way to the nearest camp placement from the starting position, but I imagine any loot chest will do).
I proceeded to save scum for about an hour, and finally obtained the Dwarven Longsword Schematic. So it works. ![]()
During that hour, however, I saw a MASSIVE amount of Tier 3 schematics for just about everything, including several types of shields (formation, mirrored, and noble or some such), AS WELL as a number of pretty sweet longswords (including on-level blues and greys, and the Champion's Sword, which I think was a purple and is basically the Hawke Key longsword from the DA2 Legacy DLC).
So if you want tier 3 longswords, go to the hissing wastes. You probably won't need to save scum like I did (and there's probably better spots than the one I found), but I didn't want to risk doing the area normally and not finding one.
And incidentally, if you want to save scum your way to loot, don't save when too close to the chest(s). It seems things get rolled as you approach the chest, not as you open them.
The one thing I find weird is that the Tier 3 longsword has the same weapon damage as the Tier 3 maces, but maces have much higher DPS due to faster animation. This begs the question: how are longswords balanced? Do they have longer range to compensate for lower swing speed?

What level do Tier 3 schematics start to show?
#36
Inviato il 02 dicembre 2014 - 04:39
I think they're not tied to level... but to areas. Basically areas or chests or some such are tied to a level range of items.
So for example, if you're level 20 in the hinterlands you're still getting level 8-ish loot, whereas if you were level 8 in the Hissing Wastes you'd still get level 16 gear.
I _THINK_.
Either way, the Hissing Waste is the first time I find reliable Tier 3 gear popping in chests. It was really a night and day difference when compared to the Western Approach.

I wasn't paying much attention when I crafted higher tier weapons and I'm a fairly high level but is the level you can use it tied to the materials it's crafted with or the schematic tier, or is it just automatically useable by your character regardless of level?

There are no level restrictions to crafted items. The only real restriction is you need to get the schematics and mats, which themselves are tied to areas of different levels.

I've been save scumming for close to two hours in Sulevin's Cradle (guaranteed T3 schematics) and have yet to find the Dwarven Longsword.
It's absolutely ridiculous that there's only one ****** T3 longsword in the entire game, that the only way to get it is through RNGesus, and on top of this axes and maces have better DPS for no good reason. Bioware done goofed.

Finally save-scumed to the dwarven longsword. It looks great (one of the better weapon designs in the game; quite sleek), but dps is terribad. It can't even match up to the Caliban with Dragonbone(unless you use critical crafting i guess, but there are better options for the masterwork slot), and Caliban's dps isn't that great to begin with. Why are there so many axes and maces?!
What really bugs me is the Inquisition Longsword, aka Cassandra's starting weapon. Looks great, gets outclassed after an hour or so, and you NEVER EVER find another weapon that shares the design, or even a gorram schematic. WTF. To think I was planning to craft a high level version of the sword, put a demon-slaying rune on it, name it "Holy Avenger" and give it to Cass.
Quite salty about the Sulevin Blade too. Ancient elven weapon of super power mysteriousness...of course its a two-hander. ![]()

I heard that swords have a better attack number and are useful for skills since they use that attack number for things like '%300 weapon damage.'

We don't really know how - if at all - longswords are balanced vs higher DPS weapons.
To be clear: same tier Longswords and Maces/Axes (that use the same number of mats) have the same damage number, but Maces/Axes swing significantly faster and end up having a higher DPS.
That this means, at first glance, is that Maces/Axes are better for auto-attacks, while being just as good for abilities (which depend on the base damage number).
That's not to say that Longswords aren't balanced in some other way we can't readily see... but if they are it's pretty subtle (range? armor pen?). I'd be nice to have some dev info on the topic.

Okay, I also finally got the dwarven longsword... aaand it's a huge disappointment.
Let's get real here: you can get a T3 1H axe that does the same damage (about 175) per swing as the longsword, but has a much higher DPS (250 vs 180-something). On top of this, the longsword has two utility slots whereas the axe has three offense slots, so you can't even craft it for more damage. What's the point of the sword then?

For looking pretty, i guess? Throw a Tevinter grip (aka the grip from the iconic grey warden sword) on it and its a very nice looking sword. Blows hard otherwise.
I think I'll just stick Cassandra with Caliban. Craft a better grip, and the sword is pretty good.

I don't suppose we could get some official clarification on this issue, could we? For all the world it looks like Swords are massively unbalanced against other one-handed weapons. Not that it mattes because finding them is rarer than rocking horse dung. ![]()

correct you are...yeah they need to re-balance man because none of the purple swords even come close to being awesome compared to the purple daggers or bows...i just don't get it...so where can you get the master work 1H sword enhancements? IE Tevinter grip?
