I was taken aback once I found out that he wasn't even a Grey Warden, let alone who he claimed to be.

Yeah, what he did was quite serious, but I feel as though he had been trying to redeem himself. I kept him with me in order for him to continue to do so. He could have continued to hide what he'd done, but he didn't want to let one of his guys take the fall. I still like him, and regardless of what he did in the past, his heart is in the right place now. My Inquisitor relies on him so much out on the field, and Blackwall always has his back.

Nobody is who they claim to be.... i mean really, do you think im really a 4000 year old dog pirate with a hook for a paw and a ship made from living cats i sewed together?  Not that shocking in the slightest to me, like the others said, there were many subtle hints that he wasnt a grey warden.  As for his crime... meh so what, he murdered someone's family who were technically innocent for personal gain.... sounds like a friday night to me....

It also makes no sense that other wardens didn't detect him. The taint is a big "HI I'M A WARDEN." sign. They should've realized he wasn't tainted.

Granted I guess you can excuse it as them being under stress and not bothering to look past the armor. But still...

Somewhere it's said that the false calling is messing with the wardens ability to sense darkspawn.  I suspect that the ability to sense the taint in other wardens is somewhat limited because of it, no matter the distance from Adamant.

is there a plot hole for him?

i brought him along for the Here lies the Assby quest and u get an option to ask him to speak to the wardens. Then he will said he has trained some of them himself and apprently, the wardens listened to him.

so if he is fake, shouldn't the wardens know that this guy looks so different from the real Blackwall who indeed trained them years ago?

The act works because when Blackwall says "I trained some of you myself" every one of the people he is speaking to thinks he is referring to the other guys. The Wardens are an international military organization that recruits all over Thedas, so some of those Wardens probably aren't even from Orlais. As an example, one of the Wardens Alistair mentions that died at Ostagar (Grigor or Gregor) was from the Anderfels originally.

I don't think that is necessarily a plot hole as Blackwall looked and acted the part well. He was convincing and spoke with confidence and authority. That is probably going to be enough to get most people to listen in a crisis.

Yeah I guess that could excuse Alistair/Stroud but meh. He really should've been exposed earlier if you took him on those quests.

The Wardens are Adamant, yes. However Alistair/Logain/Stroud can meet him in a cave in Crestwood and yet don't detect that he isn't one.

To be fair they have bigger matters on their mind. But it's odd they don't mention it especially seeing as fake Blackwall could easily be a Cory plant.

Maybe Gray Wardens have to specifically look for the taint? Or maybe they don't sense it in other Wardens? Your characters in Origins never said they sensed Riordan and in Awakening you could ask multiple times 'where are the other Wardens?' which would make little sense id they could just sense them like they do the Darkspawn.

Remember that the taint is diluted to the point that it takes 30 years on average to kill a Warden rather than the darkspawn who are baking with the stuff. Hell the mine mission in Awakening is a good example: You could miss the dying Warden and none of the others ever mention sensing him.

Of course you aren't, you are 5963, stop lying about your age and just accept that you are nearly 6k already. You aren't fooling anyone.

The build up to the reveal was good.

I don't know if anyone's mentioned how he behaves if you bring him on the quest to meet

Spoiler

My antennae went up at that. I wanted to press the matter, push to know how much of a problem it had been for him. Then there's that guilt ridden conversation he can have with you right before the reveal. There are hints, and they're very well placed.

My first play through I decided to 'play dumb'.

As the controller of the Character, of course when Blackwall started his vague responses to Grey Warden questions, and his not being affected by Corphy's calling, I *knew* something was up.....but I decided to ignore that and answer/respond/think as my character would....someone who knows nothing about the grey wardens. After all, they are a very secretive group.

It made the Blackwall reveal that much better.

Most of the grey wardens are.  They recruit from jails even.

Thieves, murderers, those committing high treason, bastards and second sons as well the honest fool or token someone in danger of dying from the taint (like some of the orgin wardens in DA:O).  As someone alluded to earlier, it's a bit like the Nightswatch in GOT. It too has absolution for past crimes and immunity from further punishment.

He was constantly idolizing the Wardens... So I made him a Warden Recruit. Whether or not he survives the joining...? Well, at least then he can die knowing he turned his lie into reality.

The demon Nightmare also has a taunt that hints at Blackwall's secret.

If you play the game a second time, try pairing Solas with Blackwall. Although I didn't realize it at the time, some of their banter seems to suggest that Solas knows who/what Blackwall really is.

Not that surprised if Solas knew. Cole also knew it right from the start.

These are the banters with Solas that I was talking about...

Blackwall: You spoke of seeing death and destruction. Did you fight in a war?
Solas: There are struggles across Thedas at any given time. I doubt you would have heard of it.
Blackwall: An Elven skirmish?
Solas: In a manner of speaking. You?
Blackwall: I was a soldier. And I... Well... You know how it is.
Solas: I do indeed.

Solas: You have seen a great deal of battle.
Blackwall: We all have.
Solas: Not all. Not like you. You live and breathe war. You understand it. It is home to you.
Blackwall: What’s that supposed to mean?
Solas: I intended no offence.
Solas: We have both seen terrible things. We have watched death and destruction render that which we love unrecognizable.
Solas: It is calming to see something familiar in another.

At first sigh I did want to just leave Blackwall in prison or even take him off and I don't know-  kill him myself? punish him for lies?

But then my good side said it would be a waste and compared to all bad things this world have (aka Corypheus and his army) his lies didnt hurt so much  Inqusition after all.

Yes he isn't Warden so what, I banished Wardens- they failed. That he wasn't one of them doesn't mean to me that a lot like to others besides just one Warden woudn't help much anyway. This is war. 100 wardens yes maybe that would help, just one? Don't think so. He did help Inqusition anyway so I could forgive his lies.

He is good man after all what a bad guy would take all fault on his shoulders? Not from  start.. he had to grow to this decision but at end he did that thing that give him a chance to be good once again.

Chaotic "wall of text" I know. I just can't describe my feelings in english that good like in my language. My..chaotic feelings..

Hmm...

I'm sure he sensed something, but there's also this (paraphrased):

Blackwall: We haven't spoken since...

Solas: There is nothing to say. I'd assumed we were alike. That we'd both seen war and it's horrors, and realized it was necessary. There was nothing necessary about what you did.

Blackwall: Don't you think I realize that? That I don't see it every time I look in a mirror? I've spent all the time since trying to atone.

Solas: By stealing another's skin.

I can't remember exactly what else he says, but Solas adds something about that being running away, and not atoning at all. He's clearly ticked off.

Anyone remember what the Nightmare demon writes on that Blackwall tombstone in the fade? I can't quite recall.

Because he is not. The part about him being a Marcher is true.

Appropriately, his greatest fear is "Himself".

Left him to rot (and possibly get executed?). I'm bitter like that. I was super mad too, cause he was wearing some of my best gear at the time, so I basically threw that out the window. They really should put these things into the "special delivery" chest. Those things belonged to the Inquisition!

I was just disappointed that he went silent for the rest of the game. I saved him from prison and let him work freely with the inquisition and the only follow-up was 'what should I call you?". I don't think he had a conversation from then until the party at the end...

I found he had one event where he finishes the rocker between those events, but it had a very narrow window for triggering (as in between getting your dragon and fighting Cory).

Yeah I'm sure the war banter was actually referring to being a warden cause they are in a constant war that they really barely win and wears them down constantly.
