If you played Mass Effect and paid some attention to the universe and races you know that Volus aren't the fighting type, and they rely on the big bad turians to watch their chubby little (or rather BIG) backs. Hell, it's because they don't have a sizeble army that is pretty much the sole reason their not in the council.
BUT if you payed allot of attention to the universe and races you know that Volus DO have some soldiers and do provide their own troops to the citadel.
My question is what are Volus soldiers like, besides cute and cuddely?
Supposedly a small number fight in the turian army. The turians light then on fire and roll their rollie-pollie butts down hills toward the enemy. After a while fire burns through the suit and they explode in a cloud of toxix gas.

Then they start rolling down on their enemies.
Not the most efficient battleplan!

The Volus are a commerce based species and they are reliant on the Turians for protection so they are great if you want a tax audit but if you want a soldier better see if the hanar are still renting blasto.

volus...soldier....had no idea the two words even connected in a sentence. Volus are not really soldier material, they are stuck in those pressure suits and one bullet hole and boom!! thats one dead volus.
Not every soldier in an army is an infantryman. In fact support personnel vastly outnumber the infantry.
It's likely that the Volus auxiliary units generally perform support roles for the Turian army. While their pressure suits would make them ill-suited to be infantrymen on most worlds, it wouldn't prevent them from being tank crewmen or artillerymen, or filling out a number of other support roles like supply, or mechanics, or medical personnel.
Their pressure suits wouldn't be any issue aboard ship either, so there are probably Volus ships serving in the Turian Fleet.

Really short. Are there actually even any Volus soldiers at all? I thought they left the military stuff to the turians.
Yes.
One of the codex entries says that the Volus can earn Turian citizenship by serving as auxiliaries in the Turian military. It doesn't really go into detail on what roles those auxiliaries fill however.

Volus = Banelings. Fill up their suits with toxic (to other races) materials and gases, then roll them into the midst of enemies and BOOM! XD

Interesting, must have missed that one. I really can't see a Volus on the frontlines however...maybe they have them do paperwork or bookkeeping?

They aren't particularly suited to combat- just like the Quarians. But instead of weak immune systems they have sensitive skin that tears against the more commonly accepted atmospheres. However Tali saw some fire fights so i'm kinda shocked we haven't seen any yet. Maybe in ME3. At least we can assume they are better fighters than Hanar (excluding blasto of course).
Except Quarians can survive with punctures in their suits due to the fact their suits are designed to wistand them. At least for a time. Kal-Reeger explains that he was "swimming in anti-biotics". Meaning that Quarians could potentially survive on the battlefield if shot.
However Volus are so sensative to the normal gravity/atmosphere that if one got a pucture they would pretty much either explode or implode. Give or take. Even Tali could take off her mask to splurge on Shepard, of course she got a cold afterward but it was "totally worth it"
I'd say it's POSSIBLE for a Volus soldier party member, but not as likely as a Quarian. However I still find a Hanar Spectre more ridiculous as their only defence mechanisms are in water, or with their tentacles and even that's just close range

Them controllin' Mechs would be viable, but themselves on the battlefield would not be likely, since they lack speed, athleticism, stealth etc
Maybe proficient at sniping, if they could stop wheezing

Did someone beat me to it?]
Edit: yeah, someone beat me to it. So now I have to be original.
Volus soldiers are volus walking around with the Turian Hierarchy on speed dial.
