Well that's not going to happen, but I'd like that. Even though is sucked in 2, I do miss Cone of Cold. It was one of the best spells in Origins.

I completely agree OP! Cone of Cold was a BOSS spell in both previous DA games, why throw away bottled lightning?!?! Cone of Cold, visually and spell effect wise was my absolute favorite from DA:2. I always wished that there were more spells with interesting/unique effects like it. Boo Ice Wall, yay Cone of Cold!

Meanwhile Wall of Ice could be made far more useful with a mana cost reduction. 50 mana is a lot to ask for. Why not 35, like Wall of Fire?

I have a feeling you just stick the wall out in the middle of a field and let mobs walk around it.
I use it to shield my squishys/reroute mobs into a bottle neck, right into a fire/ice glyph trap.
It really is one of the better spells.

It's too expensive, otherwise it can be used quite interestingly against ranged enemies.

For me, Cone of Cold was one of the most iconic spells in DAO and DA2. Oh how I remember moving my mouse inch by inch (or rather centimeter by centimeter) to just get that perfect angle of hitting everyone but my party. As for it replacing Ice Wall, I don't know. While I already spec'd out of Ice Wall (not enough points to spare), I did find some interesting uses for it.
The obvious is blocking an enemy's path. This works extra well in stairs and corridors since enemies are unable to walk around it. The downside, it blocks your projectiles, such as the basic staff attack. On the plus side, you can still hit them with spells like Winter's Grasp or Chain Lightning.
Speaking of blocking projectiles . . . Ice Wall, even on an open field, in front of enemy archers. Enemy ranged AI is too dumb to walk around it and will continue shooting into the Ice Wall.

I think that's the problem. Ice wall does have some interesting uses but when you only have 8 slots to play with, it's hard to justify burning a slot on a situational spell high up a tree.

the lower half of Winter tree is just not good, while the top is superb. I cant see anyone taking it past winter stillness, unless for RP reason

Cone of cold definately felt like an iconic spell. I'm surprised it didn't make the cut, quite honestly.

I would like to see Ice wall buffed by lowering the mana cost, chilling/damaging (with chance to freeze after a few sec?) mobs that stand next to it, making it reflect missiles back at attackers or some combination of the above. It has interesting tactical potential but right now it just can't compete with the alternatives considering the 8 ability limitation.

I for one love Ice Wall!!! I played a Cryomancer for my first PT and yes, for tactics, I loved it! Enemies would try to get at me by going around my tank and I throw up Ice Wall, then Fade Step around, blast with Fire Wall and then move back behind the Ice Wall.

They just need to remove the 20 seconds it stays around and make it permanent until it's destroyed/recast.
This might also work. The main issue with it is that a spell like Wall of Ice should cater to and reward smart gameplay. With a hefty mana cost for a temporary wall, most often I'd rather just CC or damage the enemies directly.

I've essentially spec'd my mage to concentrate on DPS in the early stages, with boosts to mana regeneration & cool down through Solas , Winter Stillness, & Clean Burn. I included the passive spirit talent from the spirit tree along with barrier and capped it off with ice armor, which I then enhanced by combining it with a conveniently placed ice mine a few feet in front of me before the action starts.
However, I was completely torn up over whether to do the ice mine or the wall in order to keep the ice armor bonus (nice touch btw to make the armor contingent upon actual cold spells). The wall, while aesthetically pleasing, seemed too nuanced for my tastes whereas I could easily use the mine and stand in it. Problem is standing in the line is a two pronged problem; first there's a flit h that will drop the armor and uou have to exit and come back in the field to reactivate the armor again, and then melee dmgrs who run into you field are immediately frozen, but you loose you armor while being indirect line of damage.
I NEVER CONSIDERED USING THE WALL AS PURELY A RANGED DEFENSIVE TOOL.
You guys are alright.

I would replace the super lame ice mine with Cone of Cold, and make it function exactly like it did in previous games.
Fire mine replaced with Firestorm.
Blizzard replaced with DA:O Blizzard.
Significantly up the damage of all the spells, reduce cooldowns. increase mana regen, make all spells effect bosses. Basically redesign the entire class.
Spirit blade and Barrier can stay, but that's about the only thing that felt right about the class to me. However I wouldn't have just barrier and no healing. But have Barrier added on top of healing.

Sorry, can't agree with the bolded part. The mage is already strong enough, to do these thing would break the game

Icewall blocks dragonfire shots. It's easier than dodging.
