I see the game on STEAM now but am concerned if this old game will run on a modern Windows 8 machine. I see that some people are having issues with wide screen monitors and other say they can't play any of the vids while others say it just crashes after the loading screen.

Are there really problems like this or are those really rare cases?

I play the gog and disc version on my windows 8 Asus laptop just fine. The game uses an old dirrectX that moden machines sometimes don't want to render... if you have an intel card it should work right out of the box but some ati cards have a minor issue.

 

p.s. most the people on the steam/ gog forums are just not that computer saviy... most (90%) issues are just update the graptics driver and the others tend to be turn off torrents or change monitor to 800X600.

Ok.  well it is on sale so I guess I'll give it a shot.  My brother wants to get it also but he's like me about his concerns.  I guess if I can get it to work he'll get it also.  I'll let you know how it goes.
