So, I've probably just shot myself in the foot with this, and if so, fine. But here's my problem. On the two branching questlines, i did the requirements for each of the first, without turning either in. However, now my problem is that neither npc will let me advance. Both think I'm working for the other guy, and if i even if i convince one that I'm siding with them, i still cannot advance in the story with the other. Now this wouldn't be a huge problem if i had another save game close to this point. I have another save file, but it's 12 hours earlier in the game. Is there anyway around this that people have found? or do i have to go back to the other save file? Also, this may belong in the pc technical issues. I just wasn't sure so i put it here since it's involving quests.

Others have reached the same impasse, and afaik you're stuck and while have to reload. This is why you should always make multiple frequent saves in new slots. So that when (not if) things go wrong, you can just reload a recent save.

Sorry.

f5 won't help in such a situation - because you only have one of them, each new one overwrites the old one. It's been said a lot, make frequent saves, make each one in a new slot, and don't delete them. I don't delete any saves on a character until I've finished the entire game. Then I delete most (not all) of them. I still leave the ones from just before Landsmeet on. And I make a hard save at least once in every new area - sometimes more than one in bigger areas.

If you choose not to do that, for whatever reason, that's your prerogative. But it's also your risk.

I'm sorry if I sound heartless. I'm really not, and I do feel your pain. I learned this the hard way myself. Lost half a day of playing (around 4 hours).

I gather you are supposed to be able to do both until a certain point - but that sometimes it bugs out. Or perhaps you can only do both if you make the exact dialogue choices. I know you can pretend to side with one and then betray them at the last minute. But it seems risky - and it has proven risky - because players don't know how to weave safely through the choices.

Good luck to the OP, in any case.

The problem is that neither side trusts you anymore. You will not be able to advance. If you are going to play the double agent it takes careful weaving through the dialogue choices and a high persuasion. You have to be a silver tongued master to pull it off. Far better to pick a side.

As SusanStoHelit said, Save often, Save in different slots. Do not rely on Quicksave, you will make the mistake of quicksaving over a quicksave you wanted to keep. Save regularly and in different slots. It will save you a world of grief and time.

OP you will have to go back to a previous save.
