Well, I would say its challenging on Hard or Nightmare for the first 5 or 6 levels, then it starts to get rather easy.    I actually had a decent mage going on Hard until I hit about level 10, then all of a sudden things started getting easier and easier, now at 15 I am still fighting mostly level 11 stuff and its starting to wear on me.

Going to restart a rogue I think on Nightmare this time.    I think part of the problem is the no level scaling of areas.   For completionists like me, we are going to out-level areas in this game, which is kind of sad to me.    At least on my mage playthrough, I got to write down the relative levels of the areas, so hopefully this time through I can plan my playthrough better so I am actually still fighting things in my level range.

Played on Normal so far and it has been reasonably challenging.

Not enough to get my bloodrage flowing, but enough that I do not feel that I am simply walking through the game.

Yeah Facing equal level enemies on hard is a good workout.

Thing is there's no level scaling so.

But there is soft level scaling...afaik zones have a level cap and until you reach that level, enemies that would be lower than you are levelled up. You can still face enemies higher level though so things aren't scaled down...

Or maybe its just a feature of nightmare. Not tried any other difficulties.

Some of the missions in the main storyline are brutal on nightmare I've just found out. I went in at the recommended max level and almost couldn't handle it with 3 mages spamming barriers. Should have grinded an extra level above recommended first, but I got bored of that.

Nightmare can be brutal, especially when it comes to major encounters and bosses.

Once you have some Masterwork gear and more abilities it gets easier, but it'll still be challanging (it's harder than DA:O was in general, possibly harder, but more fair, than DA2).

Oh c'mon... DA:O is a cakewalk compared to DA:I. There is barely any really difficult battle - everything goes down accoriding to the same scheme - Tank in - Taunt - Force Field - attack/AOE spam.

DA2 is actually difficult, but 95% of the difficulty comes from sheer number of enemies and mid-combat spawning (as well as completely broken FF).

You didn't have problems with major fights in Inquisition?

The only fight I've had trouble with so far in Inquisition is the first boss, and only because the AI kept running my team into places they shouldn't be and they died to the lighting attacks.

If I had Origin's controls, DAI would be even easier.

Some of the enemies scale and others don`t. This game is going to be hard for compulsive completionist types, because you kind of make exploring partially pointless by getting more levels than needed. Any special loot you find is going to be obsolete, and certain encounters can be super low level if you do things in "wrong order". I think I`ve met level 7 enemies with level 14 characters at one point. Crafting is also weird, you are better off just going straight to high level area and getting tier 3 materials there.

As for the difficulty, this is a pretty easy game. Even with AI and control problems that both make things harder than they should be. Sword and Board warriors like Blackwall seem to be almost invincible for most part. Barrier is ridiculously good skill as well and game seems to assume that every mage takes it. Rogues are ultra-squishy and for some reason AI just keeps getting killed (AI not clearing their aggro or something probably). Good thing is that you don`t need to use rogues for anything but door opening. Well, maybe that is not such a good thing after all. :P
