Hi!

My Inquisitor is a mage and I really can't decide between rift mage and knight enchanter. I like Solas in my party (sometimes change to Dorian, just for the versality), so I just wonder which combination could be better and more fun. I play with friendly fire on if this matters.

Personally, I'm trying:

Inquisitor: Lightning Knight-Enchanter

Solas: Ice/Spirit and Rift Mage

Cassandra: All tank musts and full Templar for the passives

Sera: respeced to dual-wield and items focused more towards tankiness than pure dps

Templar seriously beefs up the party with it's passives, also got the +defenses perk in Forces asap. I use Solas to get the +regen passive in the Spirit tree so rest of party doesn't have mana problems (rift mage doesn't have mana problems already).

With friendly fire on, that changes things since the dual mage party is primarily for the AoE. How does lightning work with friendly fire? None of the spells are true AoE, but does chain lightning hit friendlies?

Yes, chain lightning hit friendlies... a lot. :D

Having 2 Rift Mages in a party makes any sense? Can KE and RM cooperate each other?

I use a four mage party with two Rift Mages and one KE. There's synergy with two Rift Mages in that it's easy for them to keep enemies weakened. Getting mana from dealing damage to weakened enemies is what lets Rift Mages spam spells like no other (need fire and/or lightning tree to reduce cooldowns). The KE has no synergy with Rift Mages per se but since they are both individually strong they can work well together with for instance the KE tanking for the Rift Mages.

I have friendly fire on and strangely enough nothing in the KE tree deals friendly damage (despite 2 AoE abilities). In the RM tree Stonefist and Veilstrike are also safe despite being AoE so you only need to carefully aim Pull of the Abyss.

The difference between KE and RM is more defense vs. more offense if you play with friendly fire. The non-spec mage trees lack on damaging abilties without friendly fire, so 2 RM can be an good choice. I play without FF because of its bad implementation.

The difference between KE+RM, 2 x KE and 2 x RM is miniscule without friendly fire. KE is more an utility spec with damaging abilities from the non-spec trees and spirit blade if everything is on CD. RM has some nice active abilties and Stonefist has only 8s CD.
