Wait, WERE there any dark skinned people in 1 or 2? I cant really think of any unless you made the MC dark toned.
Although, those two only took place in Fereldan and Kirkwall.

I'm pretty sure the OP is wrong about this. Aside from my main characters being black (which meant the Amell family in Kirkwall was black or mixed), in DAO I at least remember Duncan and the first templar in Lothering having a darker complexion. In DA2, obviously there was Isabella.

They aren't "trying hard to be politically correct" they are just being... correct. Sorry I know it must suck when another demographic even gets a little bit of representation. I'm not even a SJW, but Bioware is like the only company that doesn't pretend gay people don't exist. Witcher, Mars: War Logs, etc all make you be a heterosexual man. Since the OPTION of being gay offends you, then maybe consider those games.

Also Mass Effect 3  has the same amount of gay companions as this.

I'm sorry but I feel that you're trying to twist my words around with your hostility and sarcasm, I tried numerous times stating that there's nothing wrong with what they're doing, I'm not offended, I just find it more emphasized with this game. Again, there seriously is nothing wrong with it, it's new, not really used to it tbh. No need to be so defensive here.

No no, see.  Fantasy worlds are allowed to be different in all sorts of ways, except they can't be progressive in matters of gender or sexuality or race.  That's just too unbelievable and it feels like Bioware's trying to shove their large agendas down our throats!  It has absolutely nothing to do with my personal issue of being uncomfortable around this content!

What an OP and especially that bonus bit. Let's hope no one ever makes a fantasy story/game about the ancient Greeks or Romans. I think he would go into meltdown.

''It wasn't like that in Europe'' is a really weak argument, given that (surprise!) Thedas isn't Europe. It's obviously inspired by it, but it's not the same thing at all.

Plus, if you want fantasy settings with rampant sexism and homophobia, there's more where that came from. Dragon Age shakes things up a bit, exactly what is so bad about this? How it is unbelievable to have a bit more LGBT people in a fictional setting than in reality, but physics-defying absurdities like dragons or, you know, magic is OK?

And how in the blazes is putting people other than straigth white folks in video games ''pushing an agenda'' anyway? Cultural and ethnic diversity are a thing in real life, and there were periods and societies where homosexuality was way more accepted than in the middle ages, hell in some cases even today. Just ask the Ancient Greeks.

1) Now, I don't have a problem with the MMORPG style quests or the big open maps. What I dislike though are the freaking obstacels. You can't go from A-B because there are some rocks in the way. you have to go to A->C->D>B.

2)Although I had no problems with the hitboxes in SP, it can be a pain in the ass in MP.

3) Don't know about you, but I'd simply take the standart atrributes for the class i'm playing anyways.

4) ps4 here, can't comment on that.

5) I adore the combat animations, but yes, sometimes facial animations are ... Off.

6) What start? Are we talking about the temple of Sacred Ashes or the Hinterlands? Because I can see why people wouldn't want to be in the Hinterlands for hours.

7) So, I guess you romanced Josie? Because I remember seeing Cassandras breasts during the romance scene.

I don't really care about 8)/10)

9) All I'd wish is that there is a direct choice for Vivienne/Cassandra/Leliana as Divine.

Bonus) Oh nononono. not going there on the BSN, I am not suicidal

As for the complaint about the side quests, I liked them. They didn't feel like fetch quests, so much as, lets explore this way. Here's a ton of stuff you can do on the road. Also, there IS fast travel, horses, and the option to not do them.

Yes, I also found the side quests are decent as side quests go, my only gripe with it is that the game gave me the impression that this was the core gameplay, until I left the hinterlands.

the difference is Dwarves, dragons, elves and Qunari didnt exist in history, all the rest did and were treated far differently.

if you're gonna base your game off some history dont just cherry pick the nice stuff and leave out the nasty and add some fantasy on-top of that.

im sure if Dragons really existed in history and Bioware chose to depict them as small chickens a lot of people would also be annoyed.

Bonus)

Credibility... I hate to be that guy to point it out, and let me say first: I have no problem whatsoever with homosexuality, race etc. in real life, but... since we are talking about frikkin Medieval High Fantasy setting, there are a few things that need mentioning:

a) I'm a hetero as the overwhelming majority of the population in any given nation and most likely also the number of DA:I players. So how come I have equally little romance options available as a male hetero guy than if I were a homosexual guy or girl??

Let me be frank, aesthetically as well as in terms of personality, I was really not impressed with the selection presented to me. No one came close to Leliana, Isabella, let alone Morrigan.

So obviously, the available resources were used to please every sexual minority and give them "equal rights" (meaning an equal number of romance options) instead of focusing on the desires of the overwhelming majority. Again, less quality, more quantity.

Isn't one openly homosexual character enough (including a short stereotypical coming-out story arc), if the majority can then have more options to choose from, like it was the case in Mass Effect 2 for instance?

b ) the agenda of pleasing literally everyone became so blatantly obvious when they revealed one sidekick character to be transsexual. I was literally laughing at my TV... Bioware, this is the frikkin Middle Ages and High Fantasy. Not 2014 Western civilization, okay?? I mean, I'm pretty well-read when it comes to High Fantasy novels and movies, and let me tell you: What you are doing is ridiculous.

c) How come there are blacks in Ferelden and Orlais? I'm really, really sure that there were no blacks in DA:O or DA2. So why are there now? Has there been a huge immigration wave in the past 10 years (DA:I is set 10 years after the end of the Blight IIRC) from some distant land, or what? Again, it is the frikkin Middle Ages. People stayed where they were born 99% of the times. Or do you recall any blacks living in main lands of the Game of Thrones setting (Westeros) for instance? Sure, there were those darker complexions closer to the south or on that other continent, which is equally true for Tevinter and Antiva. And it makes perfect sense.

But where are blacks coming from all of a sudden? In-universe, there is simply no logical explanation.

Consequentially, immersion suffers quite a bit thanks to Bioware's/EA's agenda to please everyone and get as many positive press as possible.

Other than all those points, it was a quite enjoyable (but way too long) ride.

Y'know, I was willing to give you some points and say you were right about some things. And then I got to this. Not even gonna bother arguing all of this mess.

So after 72 hours of gaming, I've probably done around 80 to 85% of what can be done in this game and all in all, I enjoyed DA:I much more than I thought I would, given all the things I read before the game was released.

I won't bother anyone with the stuff I liked and rather share the things I explicitly disliked about DA:I:

I differentiated between "darker complexion" and "black". Duncan was obviously not of black ethnicity. But anyways, the matter has been already resolved by the quoted interview with Mr. Gaider.

btw, thanks to the few posters who actually bothered to give a considered and serious feedback to the original posting in this thread.

And just FYI, I found Dorian to be one of the more interesting characters tbh (except for his stereotypical coming-out conflict) and in real life, one of my best friends is black (I actually live in central Europe, so it is probably not too common). But yeah, I'm surely that homophobic racist arsehole some of you immediately made me out to be.

I won't bother anyone with the stuff I liked and rather share the things I explicitly disliked about your review :

7) Depiction of romance... Bioware, how old do you think we are? 10? 12? DA:O was MUCH better in that regard. Compared to the Witcher series, romance and sexuality are an outright bad joke in DA:I. The climax of my romance is a kiss in front of a fireplace? For real?

In the Witcher, you could have sex with a dozen of sexy women, giving you an impressive card collection without any impacts on the storyline. I remember that time I said two lines to a peasant girl and got sexy time without even realizing. How mature. So yes, If you truly think that boning is the culmination of a romance, you're bound to be disappointed with whoever you romanced ; the thing is, you can try others. Maybe Cass ? You can see her ******. The joy of having many choices.

Bonus) Credibility... I hate to be that guy to point it out, and let me say first: I have no problem whatsoever with homosexuality, race etc. in real life, but... since we are talking about frikkin Medieval High Fantasy setting, there are a few things that need mentioning:

"I have no problem with X, but..."

a) I'm a hetero as the overwhelming majority of the population in any given nation and most likely also the number of DA:I players. So how come I have equally little romance options available as a male hetero guy than if I were a homosexual guy or girl??Let me be frank, aesthetically as well as in terms of personality, I was really not impressed with the selection presented to me. Isn't one openly homosexual character enough (including a short stereotypical coming-out story arc), if the majority can then have more options to choose from, like it was the case in Mass Effect 2 for instance ?

The idea that we should cater to the needs and want of a majority of people as well as the idea of a norm in sexuality and gender, is something I wish would'nt be OK in 2014. Let's let it slide, since it's a much deeper problem than a Dragon Age game.

Dude. I wish I could patiently explain to you why what you say is so damn wrong and hurtful, but at best, I'm a SJW, at worst, I'm a raging ovaries. What do we do, dude ? What do we do ? We let you in you sheltered bubble of life, that homosexuality is an error happening once in a million, that black are part of a minority and thus should be sweeped under the rug, because that's what we're doing with people that matter less ? We don't give them exposure, role models, we don't make them think they belong ? Maybe for you, it's nothing to be able to play a white guy in video games. Because that's what 99 percent of games are made of. But be able to immerse in a world that tell you "it's Ok, you exists, you're real" for maybe the first time, where you're not a piece of meat or a trope can be quite life changing.

That's what privilege is about. Not knowing you have it, because you never felt cared less for. Unpleasant, right ?

b ) the agenda of pleasing literally everyone became so blatantly obvious when they revealed one sidekick character to be transsexual.

There is, and always were people that felt estranged to their bodies. Before, they were persecuted for who they were. Now, they are mocked on forum threads. It makes you laugh ? Why ? Why trying to integrate all kind of people is part of an agenda ? It's beyond me.

c) How come there are blacks in Ferelden and Orlais? I'm really, really sure that there were no blacks in DA:O or DA2. So why are there now? I don't even know where to begin with this one. For you to say that you have no idea why black people should exist in Middle Age, you're already far gone, kid...

You think in term of western "white" beliefs, that everything that was taught to you at school is the universal truth and not simply the History of your own people, aka white history, told by white people, for white people. Do you think Africa was populated by savages tribes from the beginning of time to the moment glorious colons came and gave them light ? They had empires as well, kiddo. Explorers existed well before Spanish went at it. Hell, Spain, was conquered by Sarrazins as far as the French border during that time. So yes, they were black during Middle Age, as Middle Age is a period that didn't cease to exist at borders. And, no, people didn't just "stay where they were" ; Icelandic people, Chinese dynasty people travelled well before Columbus. As for Game of Thrones, Dorne people send their regards. As well as Braavos, and Dothraki-- oh, but they are just undevelopped savages, perhaps. Not a culture worth paying attention. For info, the "craddle of civilisation", Mésopotamia, was in minor Asia. What color do you think they were ? Or is it not black enough for you ?

Consequentially, immersion suffers quite a bit thanks to Bioware's/EA's agenda to please everyone and get as many positive press as possible.

Yeah, admitting something else that what you and the "overwhelming majority" want exists is sickening.

TL;DR : these problems you have with the game are not really from the game iteself. It comes from what you believe, what you think is normal and what you think is not. And that's your problem, not BioWare's.

EDIT : just saw your last post :

btw, thanks to the few posters who actually bothered to give a considered and serious feedback to the original posting in this thread.

Well you come to these "minorities" face and tell them that kind of things, what do you expect ? If you believe we/they misjudge you, how do you think you treat them ? Like, "one of my friend is black" is not stereotypical and it's going to get you out of trouble. You're friend we'll love to be treated as a token, for sure...

I'm from France, myself. You still not project a good image to me. Bear in mind I have something against what you said, not yourself. If I came as aggressive, it wasn't my intention. Simply, they are things truly infuriating in your post, and I wish you could see why.

Well, your main argument was "It wasn't like that in Middle Age", so I conceed I may have twisted it a bit after re-lecture. That post was huge and the posting UI is terrible @_@

But since DA is a fantasy universe and not a Middle-Age accuracy, trans, gay and such shouldn't be such a major no-no to you ? How I handled your post, is how I perceived it. Now, maybe you can understand why so much people are pissed off ;)

That's what Dragon Age, as a game based on an original universe is ; an interpretation, a borrowing of settings, but not following the same rules as reality. Hence the fact BioWare can do everything they want ; if the Pope is a chick, deal with it. If black are the majority, trans are ruling the world, and gay are naked in the wilderness, that's their call.

Sometimes, it's not about depicting how it is. It's about depicting how you wish it was.

If you intent to bring up guys like Fairbanks etc., that would hardly be fair as we simply know too little of them/their sexuality was never brought up. Fact is that when it was brought up, we are far away from that 5% vs. 95% notion of yours (which is a fairly high specultive number btw), I think.
