This is just a little review from a long-time fan from which it all began with Baldurs Gate. I have almost to the end of the story however I want to let the team my impressions.

My first impression, was unfortunately, very negative. I found myself thrown into the world of DA:I without much indication of where I am, so no sense of direction despite being a DA fanatic. I guess I shouldn't have expected something like DA:O with extensive backstories to your character. Not only that but it took me 3 downloads and constant trial and error on the graphics settings to make it work on my AMD Radeon HD 6870. Still, the game crashes at the worst times; during character creation, during loading, during saving! Not only that, but you have such a beautiful world but you CAN'T WALK?! Seriously, there needs to be a walk key, it breaks the immersion to have to run to take a step forward.

If I was to go on metacritic for the first few hours of the game; I would have voted negatively. But I persisted.

Then the hinterlands, I actually found it quite expansive, but despite finding it entertaining all the side quests fails to grip me and being a completionist I felt I should finish the map before moving to the next one. Bad idea. I found myself lost in what I'm suppose to do. Then I encountered my real major gripe with DA:I - the minimalistic tactics screen! It's what I enjoyed most in DAO, was disappointed with in DA2, and only to see it even more downplayed in DA:I irritated me. For me, this game should be about tactics and teamwork, however it's now a micromanaging nightmare, especially for a strategy fan like myself.

So if I was to go on metacritic now for the first 8 hours of the game; I would have voted negatively. But I persisted.

Then I got bored, and decided to focus on the story, and hell does it build up, with an amazing scene that finally gives you purpose and direction to play the game. Not only that, but the crafting options open up and it's the best crafting in the series. The inventory management could use some work however (look to Skyrim mods for a look at a functional and easy to use UI). The characters, the story, all starts building up, and that's when I finally feel like "ok, it is still a Bioware game". I especially enjoyed the (SPOILER) scene where you get a glimpse of the world without your intervention, it's truly dark and started an internal debate of "Is there truly a maker? For one year I was gone and nothing was done to invert such evil, or was it part of his plan for me to see and thus inspire me to take action"(END SPOILER) - that was very well done and truly worthy of a dark fantasy title.

So all in all I now would rate the game an 8/10 - so far, as I have not yet finished (almost there judging by the quest list), not nearly the masterpiece that DAO was, but still impressive. Just know that the game makes a horrible first impression (I started with 6, when down to 5, then up to 8/10 within the first 10 hours), and I hope you guys acknowledge the weaknesses of this game and work to improve it. The user metacritic scores in my opinion are also further prove of the horrible first impression as most players seem to have lost interest within the 10 hour window - not all are as persistent as me to carry on despite bad impressions)

I think this is another example of how BioWare is a "has been" company.

They have grand writers, but beyond that - they're so far behind the curve technically, they probably think they're ahead.

As a long time fan of Bioware, I feel like things have been going down hill. DA2 was a terrible sequel, but I felt it was a decent game otherwise. But being a fan of elves, specially the elves of DA's universe, I've slowly watched them get butchered with each game. More and more.........and more....and more.

8/10?  All I've seen and read doesn't match up to that.  I'm happy for you that you like it that much.  I however won't buy something that has been released in such a technically poor state and so poorly thought out for my platform.

You voiced a lot of my issues with it. I feel very conflicted about the game overall. There is a lot of good there, but there are some technical problems (cutscene frame rates for example) and a few very questionable design decisions (lack of tactics, PC controls) that really detract from the experience. If I could sum up DAI in two words it would be - unrealised potential. I'd give it about 7/10.

Aye, I'm being as objective as I can with my review, to review the whole game and I found 8/10 to be the most balanced, as the crafting system I absolutely enjoyed and the story post act I. My first impression was horrible as I mentioned my first character was a Qunari warrior who I found sounded like a sissy, so I switched to a Dalish elf but was also annoyed that her face switched to "begging for dear life" in the beginning when I pre-envisioned her to be like my psycho city elf assassin in DA:O, and even then the Inquisitor seems to be rather one-dimensional in her dealings, at least compared to the variations of character from DA:O.

I also didn't like how I couldn't import the appearance or savegames of my previous dragon ages and that ruins it for me too, combined with technical issues, no walk key (I was actually considering shelfing the game until a patch for this sole reason alone), shameful tactics system, and the fact that everytime I crash the game seems to forget that I've already activated! Crashed while trying to recreate my Hawke too (double remember of the instability of the game + inability to import savegames + DRM welcoming me back into the game that just wasted a hour of my time recreating my Hawke) - Not very nice to crash a game and then try to reload it only to have to welcomed back with DRM!

I play Bioware games to remember the days of greatness, grasping at the remnants before I see it sink into the mass of generic games developed by publishers. In my opinion though, Bioware hasn't quite reached that point yet, getting there though. Still, 8/10 is how it is for me, once I finish the game the rating my change (I hope not, cause this is as high as it's going to get)

7/10 is also a score I can agree with as well

Well, if we're going with score? I'd give it an 7/10.

I'm having a blast with the game so far. Its enjoyable enough and I like the characters. My major complaints lie in the design of the elf pc (specially the male), no healers (one pool of healing potions for the entire party is NOT my cup of tea), issues with lag(really, I would take loading screens when entering a town over the lag), a lack of variety in character customization, and above all else..........no modding support.

I can give a 7/10 also the game has interesting characters and the game play is decent, but it has a retarded amount of glitches, there are no side quests of any substance, and I found the main quest line to be good but the ending was really anti climactic, and all the people who claim this game is 90 to 150 hours long are crazy I did literally everything in 70 playing on hard, then last but not least the choices, in DAO and DA2 I was faced with multiple situations where I would have to make some kind of heart wrenching choice where there was no right answer, and I loved that about both of them in DAI I played for 70 hours which was longer than both the last two games and there were only two times I had to make a hard choice (iron bull personal quest, the end of the grey warden mission) really and truly the only reason this game rates a 7/10 is that it has a skyrim like need to explore that keeps me playing

p.s. why does everybody hate on DA2 I thought it was awesome the only game they ever made where the protagonist has a personality

So far I'm close to about 35 hours in the game and I haven't yet started the In Your Heart Shall Burn quest. So its more a matter of a personal pacing and if you rush, or enjoy exploring...yadda yadda...

I don't think DA2 was a bad game. It was a good game...just a terrible sequel. it was not what fans wanted after such an amazing game like DAO. Plus, they took away race selection and used the same 3 or 4 dungeons for every dungeon layout in the game. So new areas got repetitive. Plus, by the time I finished that game, I was convinced that my Hawke was the only sane mage in all of Kirkwall.

So yes, it was a good game if you go by story standards. But what hurt it was the DA title, the expectations of fans, and the corners that were cut during production.

I agree with the recycled dungeons and I can see one backstory being a problem for some people but I thought Hawke having a consistant backstory allow him to develop much better than most Bioware characters I was in no way disappointed

Thank you for your opinions op.

I will not put a number for now as i want to wait for a few patches and give Bioware time to improve the game.

This is a pretty fair evaluation. I had some slightly different experiences (on my PC, DAI runs fine and doesn't have any technical issues), but mostly, I understand where the OP is coming from. 8/10 is a fair call. Admittedly, it's a game where I feel like it could have gotten 10/10 with a little more effort.

For those of you who get bored in the first area and think DAI is only about gathering quests:

Get out of the Hinterlands!

Seriously!

http://www.reddit.co...ng_hinterlands/

Being a completionist will give you a bad game experience!

It's also a fault of BioWare to not tell people more pointedly exactly this!

It shouldn't be difficult to say in game "Look, there's a really cool story going on in this game over the corner, but you are still here fighting way too hard battles and collecting stupid shards! Come back later, if you want to!"

Aye they need to install some sense of urgency in the hinterlands. Too late now though, seems alot of players have given up based on the metacritic scores, my mate also told me that if it wasn't for me (who actually left the hinterlands) he would have given up on the game as well.

I lost interest and even despite knowing that it might get better, I still have no inclination to play. That's how negative and put off I was. What a waste of a $60 on a bad console port. The lack of click to move, click to loot, auto-attacks, decent tactical camera, and a loot scanning toggle really ruined the game for me.

I played DA2 again recently, in preparation for DA: I, and I actually enjoyed it so much more this time around. It was definitely a good game, even though my review on gamefaqs tore it to shreds. I still agree with a lot of my negative points in my review, but they don't bother me as much. I think the worst thing is the lack of a tactical camera and reused dungeons. That's really the only major problems with the game that really could have made the game's vision come out better.
