So, I was wondering if you guys tended to have a theme behind the names of your characters?  For instance, all of my dwarven characters tend to be named after various stones and gems; my current character is named Garnet.   All of my elven characters tend to have the same name as trees.  I have one I've rolled and saving for later named Aspen.

My humans tend to have variations of names meaning "hope" or "faith."  My Qunari thus far has tended towards Middle-Eastern and Egyptian names.  For my Qunari mage, her name is Seshafi, which is Egyptian for "angry woman."  :P

What about you guys?  What are the name themes you prefer for your Inquisitors?

I just find racial themes, I guess. For the human, it's Celt/Welsh (and for Ferelden characters, I do the same). My character is Owyn. I just thought it was a better fit than Maxwell. It means young fighter or young warrior. Not much to it.

Funnily, I've grown to liking the default. Maxwell. It's kind of fancy, a bit poncy, and masculine at the same time.

I went with something Welsh for my human characters(in all three games).  Tristan is the name of my Herald.

I usually name my human males after great Kings and Emperors in history. Like my Mage Warden I named him after Cyrus the Great, the founder of the Achaemenid Empire.

For DA:I, I named my Human Mage after Alexander the Great

I've been using the name Aargon Stormbringer for my "main" since the days of "The Bard's Tale II" on C64. In this game, I actually made him twice, as an Elf 2h Warrior and as a Human Mage.

I tend to recycle a lot of names which comes in handy being an altoholic, as these names are tied to certain archetypes, or personalities.

i.e.: Human Female paladin lawful good: Ariel, Arkel, Angela.

Human female hard-ass dual wielding warrior or rogue: Seskia, Lizbeth.

Evil aligned female mage: Lillova.

Exotic (Orc/Troll etc) shaman: Rhu, Mexxel.

Male two handed racist warrior: Micail.

Dwarven preist: Swentibold.

Evil aligned male mage: Darheel.

etc, etc, etc.

Not so much a theme, but every name has to be tied to their personality or looks in some way.

Eavan means fair of face, which I chose because she's a temptress rogue.

Acantha means thorny because she's my qunari with a bit of a brusque personality.

I briefly tried male Qunari but the only name that came to mind for him was "Meat Truck". -.-

From a lore perspective Dragon Age does a solid job of providing background guidance for naming as the different cultures tend to be inspired by a real world analog. But DA2 and DA:I both clamp the lore claws on you as by assigning you a family name for most races. So keep in mind any name you come up with has to fit with that. Otherwise you'll be in for a surprise later when you realize everyone thinks your name is Jim Bob Trevelyan.

If I cannot think of anything good, I just use the default names.

I really don't have a theme for player names but when I create a character and pick a name it is like etched in stone. When I play one like this I am usually always human and the name kind of comes to me from nowhere. My DAO name was Ella Cousland and DAII was Aurora Hawke. For this one I picked a name when I first heard the game was in development. Josepha was the name, but when I found out about Josephine I wanted something different. Also early on I had heard it would take place in Orlais and I had figured the player would be Orlesian so I chose Nicolette. With release and finding out the character is a free marcher I chose a name I actually had never heard of (didn't make it up but no idea where I got it). Alethaea Trevelyan.

Never cared so much about names that will fit the DA lore in past games. My Warden was Katherine Cousland and Hawke was named Liara.

I did not get past the the prologue yet and will wait for the patch since I've got some mute npc glitches and crashes already, but I've created some characters for a first and second playtrough. Probably will keep them or at least reroll for a better appearance but keep the names and themes.

Since Cassandra's surname is Penthagast which made me remember the Pendragon of the Arthurian legend, I've named a human male warrior Arthurius (IIRC that's how they called Arthur in the 2004 movie). I'll probably play him as a lawful good noble character. Maybe with a Ned Stark sense of honor. Also, I thought the name would fit an older character since I'm thinkin to play with a 40 or 50y old hero Inquisitor.

There is Hera, a female human rogue who resembles a lady Witcher, white hair and yellow eyes included. Thought the name would fit an borderline chaotic neutral/evil character who would buy the Chosen One myth they'll give her.

Also, I'm thinking about creating a female elf or human mage named Morgana (also from the Arthurian legend).

Love Morgana (a name from one of my favorite books)- actually was considering this for one of my play throughs but it didn't fit Trevelyan enough for me.

Gwendolyn Cousland
Keira Hawke
Tristan Hawke (male)
Eden Trevelyan - not really my favorite but I didn't like the way anything sounded with Trevelyan and ended up settling on something that was "good enough". (I like the last name Trevelyan though oddly enough).

I also had other miscellaneous characters whose names I can't remember- I usually go with something Celtic/medieval sounding.
