I am wondering if i've done something completely wrong with the way I've skilled Iron Bull. I quite like the character, and have been wanting to use him more in my party but every time I take him he just guzzles all the potions, dies and does barely any damage due to him being flat on the ground.

I've focused him as a Two-Hander, I tend to keep them what they 'seem' to be upon recruitment. I have mostly Two-Hander spells and some of the Reaver. Yet he doesn't seem to survive more than a hit or two. Even my Rogues seem to survive longer than him!

I thought about getting some of the tanking abilities, but I suspect then he'd just die quicker with the attention of the baddies.

Any manage to make him somewhat useful and can spare your how? :D

Same thing happens to me. I guess its because two handed abilities don't generate guard as much as a sword and shield type. This is entirely supposition on my part. As a result, he stays in the bar while Cassandra and Blackwall do all the heavy lifting. ;)

It's hard to tank with a two-hander, and especially hard if you let the computer control him. Against many enemies you can't use Block & Slash to defend yourself, and so you have to rely on rolling around all over the place to avoid attacks.

Add to this that you don't have a shield that adds extra armor and +30% defense in front. Furthermore, the Sword and Shield tree has some really good tanking passives such as being immune to flanking, 50% reduction from ranged attacks and +20% defense to all frontal attacks. If you get all those and use Shield Wall on top you are pretty much invulnerable.

Pick up unbowed from the Vanguard tree, Unbowed + the passives you get along the way is more then enough to keep him alive. Just disable the taunt you get along the way so that he doesn't use it. Set unbowed to prefered and he will keep armor up for the most part, you might have to manually use it on Dragons since he doesn't seem to want to spam it as much as he should vs single targets. In a pinch you can manually use War Cry as well, in situations when he is going to be attacked anyway and you could use the armor, if you have a slot for it that is.

Thing is, the problem is that Bull loves fighting, not blocking. Same with some of the warriors. Blackwall seems to be the best for true tanking. Cassandra seems to have a hard time keeping her guard up most of the time. Block and slash is more of a player-as-warrior skill if you ask me.

I'd say, make Bull a DPS with some guard generator skills and build yourself as a "tank" to handle the big guys.

I hope I get proved wrong, but 2H seems a particular weak character option. So if you want to use Bull a lot just build him as another tank, and dont use the bottom of the reaver tree.

Althernatly build him as the 2H berserker and treat keeping him alive as a challange.

I tried using him in a party with Cassandra as tank on hard difficulty, but I gave up quickly. He was wearing purple gear on par with the enemy level, but he was only good for dying and chugging down all my health potions.

All thanks to the marvelous AI, that makes Sera run into aoe damage and shoot arrows at point blank range, while Cassandra decides to stand still and turn her back to an archer who is shooting arrows in her butt.

2H/Warrior is the hardest class to play in DA:I, There guard generation is crap and can go from full guard to zero in one hit. it also doesnt help that almost every fight in game consists of 4 or more ranged classes with 2 melee types. add to all this the fact that there are no true healers(Herp-a-Durp) and pots are limited(HUEHUEHUE)

2H Warriors go from holding there own and bringing the pain(DA:O,DA2) to being barely able and feeling the pain.(DA:I)

Whirlwind and items that give Guard on hit makes for a very durable Iron Bull.

If you're looking for him to tank, try the following.

Two Handed: Block and Slash, Flawless Defense, Mighty Blows, Shield Breaker, Whirlwind, Raising Winds, Clear a Path.

Vanguard: Warcry, Untouchable Defense, It'll Cost You, Unbowed, Charging Bull.

That's 12 points and gives a lot of durability, especially if you have an item that generates guard on hit. Use Charging Bull to get into the thick of things, War Cry to get a big guard boost and get enemies to surround you, then start Whirlwind. Works better if you have a mage that can drop a barrier on him from time to time. Supplement it with Reaver passives to increase your damage should things start turning against you. Against single targets that aren't dragons he makes pretty good use of Block and Slash.

I'm using Bull as an attention draw as much as my tank, and he was a bit glassy to start, but even using medicore tier 3 armor and a monster double bladed axe, specced with Reaver (do NOT get dragon if using AI) and I believe some from the Vanguard line for guard, he has about a 29% crit rate, and I let him pommel then swing blade it for AOE and he rarely takes much damage.  However on those occasional long battles when his health is down and Reaver kicks in, his output is pretty substantial.  Problem is now, I'm hitting for 3500k + per, so by the time my mele characters get to the target, they are often laying there dead already.

Bull just requires some setup, extra health, and a bit of guard and he is pretty tough.

I think you mean 3.5k, not 3500k. 3500k is 3.5 million damage....

Thanks for all the advice and tips! I've managed to make him somewhat usable by giving him some of the guard generating abilities mentioned (Unbowed etc) and have been holding him back until Cass or Blackwall have thrown out a War Cry and taunted most of them.

He does some nice damage nice and his banter is great!

LOL yeah, my bad, 3.5k

Oh man, I LOVE his banter with Blackwall, there was a bit about their weapons preferences and stories of gruesome battles they fought that was priceless.   He has some pretty good banter with Cass about why she should be in charge or morale that was pretty funny as well.

The Reaver line seemed a bit counter intuitive to me for using AI, but without the last ability, his damage goes through the roof as well as his regen ability.  Solas has had to revive him once or twice, but mostly due to my error in playing than anything.
