I a on my first play through, and I just made level 8 while at Val Royeaux.  I discovered some shops, one of which sells schematics.  I have approximately 5700 gold at the moment.  I have spent all my time in Haven and the Hinterlands and no where else.

 

Is there something I should be saving for in my future, or would it be wiser to spend on these schematics now?  I just don't want to end up in a holding pattern grinding for money.

There's nothing worth buying in the game except schematics (or herbs if you want ot avoid picking elfroot and blood lotus all the time).  Whether those specific schematics are worth buying is hard to say.  Depends on your level and gear situation.  If its a big improvement, go for it.
