First I started a character on normal difficulty wich was way too easy, I love a challenge so I rerolled a nightmare character and went with a qurani warrior and playing as a tank now. Is this a viable option to play the game this way? I am level 6 now and doing pretty well, however the only problem I have is with rifts. Cannot disturb them when playing as a tank because of getting interrupted.

I like to play as tank, feels like having a lot of control on the battlefield, and letting my ranged dps attacking my target and nuking them down.

Anyone else playing as a tank inquisitor? I like it myself, but I'm just at the start of the game now. I'm kinda worried this might not work well later in the game?

My first character was a tank and it was..... ok.  The biggest problem I had was skills I thought I needed were spread out between three trees and you can only slot 8 abilities. You will need the two taunts and the mandatory inquisitor power. So... right there is three slots taken. You will need a mobility either Bull or the S&S charge. then you are going to have to dig for shield wall, and for some places in the game you will need shield bash ( for guarded mobs and to access certain locations ) depending on your team make up. That is 6 of the 8 leaving you two slots to choose actual skills you might want to use. Ended up being really boring.

I scrapped the character 20 hours in; never finished.

Every time I try to close a rift with my Mage inquisitor before the fight is over, the game doesn't let me anyway. So I don't think you're missing anything.

You always need a tank, so in theory playing a tank should make sense. Two main problems one psychological and one real.

Playing a tank is really quite repetitive and the AI does it quite well. So playing another character type might be more interesting, however that is an illusion as you can just operate one of the companions. So, for example, if your into Rift mages you can operate Solas during combat while having the inquisitor a Cass clone run by the AI.

The only real problem I see is closing rifts. Your damage rift power does not work while taking hits, and the tank should always be the one taking the hits. So you have to close your rifts the hard way.

More viable than not playing a tank, excluding soloable Knight Enchanter.

To be fair, on Nightmare disrupting the Rift is not worth your time. It merely inflicts a very short stun (~1s) on all demons, and deals an extremely insignificant amount of damage.

As already said, biggest problem is going to be the restriction in skill slots. :(

Why would you need both taunts? One is enough, war cry if you're the main tank and challenge if you're a secondary.

Besides, this is a problem all the classes have - they all have skills that are more or less necessary: barrier, dispel, fade step, stealth, etc.

Yes playing a tank Inquisitor isn't an issue at all. You kinda need a tank or semi tank for most boss unless you will spec all your character in subpart damage dealer to gain survivability, And even when i respect my warrior to DPS instead of tank, i still control Cassandra as a tank and let the dps free-roam.

I always have at least 1 of each in my group and generally play theses combo for dragon hunting:

Warrior, Dorian/Vivienne, Sera (or Varric for a bit of challenge, and cole if you wanna leave him AFK in a side during half the fight)

Warrior, Cassandra, Dorian or Vivienne, Sera (or Varric for a bit of challenge, and cole if you wanna leave him AFK in a side during half the fight)

But you can pretty much be running with anyone in your party (while still following mage/war/range rogue/random) and blow through the content in nightmare,

I just found out a nifty bit of info on these boards today that might help you.  When you defeat the first small wave of rift enemies, there is a short (2-3 second) window when the rift orb casts down beams that will spawn nasty enemies.  I'm told you can use your mage in the party to target these with the Dispel or Spell Purge ability, and it will disrupt them before the enemy even spawns.  One less to fight.  Other people say if you're quick enough, or get lucky with your companion placement, you can also strike the beam before the enemy spawns, also disrupting it.  I haven't tried it myself, since I just found out, but multiple people confirmed that they do this.  If so, rifts just became a lot less problematic.

That's kind of sad, because if I'm hearing you right, it means that Iron Bull isn't really an option then.

Would a Templar's Dispel work?

Its not optimal on NM. This is - due to my experience - because the tank is the only AI that does not need occational babysitting in harder encounters.

The only class that can really completely safely disrupt a rift to help close it is a Rogue Tempest. Just use the flask of lightning then disrupt and it will be done before you know it, or the enemies do.

Would a Templar's Dispel work?

If the Inquisitor's is the same as the one Cassandra has than it should.

On reflection using a tank on your first playthough might be a good idea. The point is that you can safly leave the AI to handle your character why you try out all the other build types with your companions.

The problem I am having at the moment is that I want to try out various Rift and Necro builds, however my inquisitor is a dagger rogue. Dagger rouges are probably the class that needs most mico managing so its difficult. If my inquisitor was a tank experimenting with other characters would be easy. And initially I think having experience trying out all paly styles has to be a good idea.

Having played 80% of the game on nightmare with SnS I've found that 8 skills are simply not enough for a well rounded (and fun to play) tank.

Unless you really love the role just leave tanking and buffing to the AI, both Blackwall or Cassandra are great in their own way.

Why would you need both taunts? One is enough, war cry if you're the main tank and challenge if you're a secondary.

If you want to reliably keep all enemies away from the dps you need both taunts and grappling chain.

QFT

the AI not only works well with melee in general (minus if you use aoe abilities with ff on, like charging bull mighty blow etc) it also uses it much better than you ever will be able to on the retroactive skills like shield block and block and slash cuz they will always use it at the right times they are about to be hit, while you being human will miss the timings or often stand there like a lemon hoping to be hit.

 + this too

there is huge fun potential for playing a shield and board tank, if you dont mind the low dmg.

tho you will always need to have multiple taunts/control abilities, multiple defensive abilities and multiple attacks... and you simply dont have the room for it :/

They do not use shield wall better than a human, in theory the should be able to, but that's definitely not my experience.

Blackwall being a champion chugged potions like crazy when fighting against the Crestwood dragon while I tanked the same one with the inquisitor with just one pot at a lower level and as reaver.

The AI don't shield wall all or most of the attacks (even with preferred activated), and it certainly does not move/roll away from AoE damage.

I will be the judge of that when I find some really tough fights using Vivienne as a pyromancer and my Inquisitor with cold magic. Although I might wind up giving both of them barrier.

well I suppose not in dragon fights I was referring to the majority of fights were combat is messy with multiple targets.

also should mention that the abilities you have on your tank and the way they are set to preferred also affect how well AI uses block, for example if you have combat roll on and as preferred the AI will by default roll out of attacks rather than block them.

I've had Blackwall tank a couple dragons and he did just fine.

It's a matter of what skills you have and most importantly setting priorities for what skills to use.  For dragon fights the tank is there to hold it's attention not do damage.
