I felt this way about the game at first. I'm playing on PC, and played all the Dragon Age games at launch (preordered deluxe editions in fact, no regrets). I experimented with playing the game with a controller, and love it. The interface works beautifully with a controller. You can tune the difficulty of the combat, I suggest Nightmare (especially if you play as a Knight Enchanter). This game is a step forward, and I don't think they should have released the game with Tactical mode at all. They should just do away with it, as they are spending resources on something that I would rather see spent somewhere else. Would you rather the game play like Divinity Original Sin? Not me, and I'm thinking not most of the player base especially those just coming into the series. It might be cool to see it used for a special game mode, like a big battle (thinking LOTRO skirmishes here). Either way, game modes evolve. No need to have new RPGs play like Baldur's Gate, which was released 16 years ago.
Who else would rather boot up their old copy of Origins at this point?

Ahem, sorry, couldn't help myself there. ![]()
Yes, there is need. And I say that as someone who never got into either Baldur's Gate. I loved DA:O, disliked DA2 and haven't played DA:I yet, though I suspect I'll like it. Over the last years I also played and enjoyed Planescape: Torment, Arcanum, Divinity: OS, Mass Effect 1-3, Shadowrun Returns, Wasteland 2, Witcher, Jade Empire, KotOR and more. Among other games I backed Project Eternity and Torment: Tides of Numenera on Kickstarter.
Are all of these games that would appeal to a huge audience and/or bring a publisher Skyrim numbers in sales? No, but they don't neccessarily need to. But there are people who want all kinds of games, and I think it's nice we can hope to get a wider variety of RPGs these days, from Bioware's DA:I approach to the less cinematic, turn based games.
Yay variety! ![]()

I'm really disappointed with the combat getting shafted in Inquisition. Everything else in the game may be perfect, but that was the ONE aspect that I enjoyed the most and they ruined it.
Seriously at this point I just feel like buying a pack of cigars and sitting down to a fresh playthrough of something I never tried like a Dalish warrior and picking a male character this time so I can actually romance Morrigan.
Have fun.
I don't even see a big difference in combat. But whatever. I'll stick with DA:I any day over Origins or 2.

I liked origins at the time.
I like this now.

I actually think I over-analyzed the game and combat this play-through. I am so overpowered that the entire group can get knocked out and I can breeze through the rest of the fight without a scratch. With the right skills and crafting you can become a god.

What are you trying to accomplish by posting a thread like this on the INQUISITION forums. Other than invoke internet argument that is.

I've completed DA:I 3 times so far and have not even did half the zones in any of them, by time i had did DA:O 3 times i had seen everything there was to be seen, combat in DA:O is bad and now adays i prefer the pc to be voiced so just clicking through lines for dialogue is for me dated an not welcome anymore.
The most memorable memory i have of DA:O is my character shuffling about looking like they have a broom up there arse, that aside i have great memories of DA:O but i will probably never play it again, much like the Dizzy series on spectrum i have great memories but i do not want to ruin them by thinking i can go back an actually enjoy it

I noticed that. My inquisitor never takes damage once I have his guard up, whereas the rest of the party members take the heat. Cassandra in particular takes a lot of damage, mostly because she takes damage meant for my inquisitor. The danger of proximity!

If you don't see a difference, that means you never once touched the tactics screen in Origins. The difference is huge and obvious to anyone who spent time setting up party tactics in DA:O.
I am definitely enjoying Inquisition, but the game is not without its weaknesses and the lack of combat tactics is one of them.

For those who think combat is easy - please play the game on Hard! I found combat on Normal too bee easy as a mage, just casting from far away and letting my warriors do the most of the fighting. I switched to playing the game on Hard and now its just like DAO, which I loved and cherished to this day, especially after the graphics mods that drastically improved facial appearances of all characters!

Don't you EVER say anything negative about Baldur's Gate games. EVER. I am NOT joking, buddy.

I definitely agree with this. For me it was the only way to make my usual two Rogue party work because the AI was too stupid to play one although it did still require some micro-managing.
As it stands about the only class I trust AI to play is that of tank although I still love the game.

I'm likely never going to play Origins again. After the massive leap in graphics and the huge amount of fun I'm having with DA:I... I don't know that I could enjoy DA:O.
I apparently remember a different game when it comes to Origins. I always thought that if it had a weak point, it was the combat.

Know what you mean. My first play thru was a dagger rogue. Accidentally did the higher level areas first so missed out in a bunch of challenging fights (normal)
Now I'm doing sword and board warrior and staying in my levels area for fighting. Nit trying to do every quest and get every item. And it sure is a lot if fun.

Combat in Origins was painfully slow and very glitch filled for me to go back too, Inquisition feels a lot more polished in comparison with better pacing.

At first I found the combat sort of meh. But then I discovered my 2 handed sword ability that cracks the ground and shoots lava on everything. And my war horn that lets everyone in my group know "hey over here mother fuckers" in case they could not see the lava. Then if me swinging my sword around in a circle about 10 times does not kill everything, I hang a green lantern in the sky since I wear accessories that give me focus really fast.
I could do this for hours and it still makes me giggle.

Not in the slightest. This is my new favorite Dragon Age game. It is remarkable improvement over both games in so many ways, with a few steps backwards. I'm not sure I'll ever play 1 or 2 again, because it would be hard to go back to the combat and style of Origins, and the bland, repetitive city of Kirkwall from DA2.

If there was an up to date Origins with graphics fidelity of a new game, few balance fixes and combat speed notched up say 25%? Sure, I`d be happy to play through it once more.

I have PC and I`ve tried modded version. Which improves things (mainly textures) but some issues remain. Game needs more to entice me for another round. Skyrim level modding would be nice, but community of that size does not happen every day.

Haven't started the game yet (will do so in a few minutes) but Combat was one of the things I loved in DAO and hated in DA2 (together with the lack of story, disgusting characters and ugly graphic style). I started up DA2 yesterday and boy that combat and camera controls just... are awful.
Of course I am over 40 years old, and what attracted me to DAO was that it was a "spiritual sequel" to Baldur's Gate (while DA2 was the spiritual sequel to manure). There is a reason why the only game released 2015 I really look forward to (and have pre-booked) is Pillars Of Eternity, which is VERY close to Baldur's Gate from a technical standpoint.

*glances up at title* Definitely not me. I'm with Bioware. This game is what Origins should've been.
