I did the whole "Beat Seren auto-save thing" and it worked perfectly. Had the same BS issue that everyone's complaining about. I bought the new COD Xbox so my ME1 had to be re-beat.

That seems to be the working fix until the patch the damn game so I can load my other profiles w/o playing ME1 all the time.

10 pages and ZERO response from bioware.  This is garbage!

(lol at all the different posts of the ones who 'figured out the solution')

The problem is not all of us can beat Saren again.  From what I understand in the posts, the character details required for a new+/mass effect 2 import are alive and well in the character profile.  However, we can't access this for a new ME2 game because we're missing some cache file.  It's pretty clear Bioware f-d up.  As long as we've kept our latest save, we should be able to import.  Even if that import rolls back our 'decision tree'  to the last time we completed the game.  (but still keeps our current level of course)

I'm the type of gamer that only keeps one save.  I prefer that my in-game decisions be permanent.  So I went forward with a new+ and deleted my other saves.  Because of my play-style, I'm apparently SOL.  I put a lot of time into a character I can't do anything with in ME2.  That's just WRONG.  A lot of other people are in the same boat and Bioware is apparently completely ignoring us.

The masses weren't properly informed on what hoops we'd have to jump through to make the import process work.  This is a perfect example of sloppy testing/development.  There shouldn't have been any hoops to begin with...

We shouldn't have been allowed to accidentally lose our new+/import abillity.

Doing the endgame again does 100% work. I originally beat Mass1 on my old black elite which is now in my bedroom. Id transferred all my saves to a memory unit to transfer between my black elite and my Resident Evil red elite in the livingroom.

After copying the saves from the memory unit to the red elite hdd there was no importable characters coz the last autosave is stored in the hard drives cache. I simply reloaded the last autosave for each of my characters, killed saren then quit out of the credits. On booting up Mass2 my characters were there to import.

yes thats good to know but most of us are probably right at start. this is one major screw up on a game that kind of encourges people to play more than once, i was looking forward to using the same guy from me1 and now i find because i was stupid enough to play it again instead of trading it in i cant.

to be fair me1 is still great looking game though, so might finish it again anyway

same issue here! (this maybe wrong but from what i've seen so far i think i'm correct) i started a fresh new ME2 game when importing was failing and was under the impression i could, as some point, say "yes, i saved ash, yes i save the council" but 25-40 mins in i can't(unless i am being too hasty? just got of the first station and was being questioned by miranda and jacob in the shuttle..), the council died, and the fresh game had me saving adien. so a total new ME2 game is 100% the opposite to my ME1 game, this is crappy as hell.

Same thing here. Very dissapointing. Going to have to play through new game plus and try to remember my decisions first time round. The contiuity was a big reason for buying me2.

Same problem here. My Lvl 58 Shepard is not recognized because I had the audacity to start a new playthough, to buy the ME1 DLCs, to buy a new XBox Elite, and to keep a single save file... Apparently, unlocking the achievement for successfully finishing the game is not enough to allow a character file transfer... Nice going.

And I can only appreciate the deafening silence from Bioware and EA on this specific problem. When you base your early marketing pitches on the fact the user can import his/her character from the first game, the least you could do is make sure the feature is user-friendly and works flawlessly.

I am utterly disappointed...

So, lets say I can access my old saves from ME1 but when I try to import them to ME2 I get an error message that says "A Sign-In Change Has Occurred. Sign Out of Gamer Profile to Continue" and then it restarts my game. Anyone have some info on this one? I bought ME2 so I could continue my character from ME1 so this is pretty frustrating and I can't help but feel I wasted 60 bucks...wtf BioWare?

i can see a green save (the one i don't want to use) and other two saves in orange, not selectable. Every time i try to re-complete the game a new save appears in the list, but it is also in orange. At this time i have 1 green save and 5 orange saves....

im lucky i had started playing again anyway so when i found out about this major screw up on their part it is not as bad as maybe for some people. but end of day the basis for importing should not been based on a autosave which gets over written everytime if you dont turn the option off.
i know they had to do it this way and not from achivements since people you let live/die do not get achievements for doing so. but i guess when you start new game the save game only keeps char info and not what you did in the game before.

correction i just finished it :)

ok, here's my story. At first the import utility could not find my ME1 saves. So I read somewhere that when you finish the ME1 game, there should be an autosave and it should say 'Citadel Tower'. So I went to check and I didn't have that autosave even though I know I've finished the ME1 game. I'm thinking that because I played the DLC missions for ME1 right after I finished the ME1 game and the autosave I had when I finished the game got overwritten. Good thing I had a saved game right before the final battle with Saren. If you don't have any saved game right before or near the final battle then you're out of luck, you have to play the final battle and finish the game no matter what. YOU CAN RENT THE GAME! You don't have to buy the on-demand game! So I load that up and finished the game and let the end credits roll and sure enough, a new autosave appears that says 'Citadel Tower', this is very important!. So I load the ME2 and tried the import utility again and lo and behold! My ME1 character shows up.

So I guess and maybe, the main thing here is you gotta have that Autosave file right after you finish the ME1 in order to be able to import. Try it!

Yup you have to have that last save and NOT start a new game, from what i've found out.   I'm almost back to the end of ME1 (again...#4 play through).

A big point is there seems to be something important about this cache file that is written after you save.  BUT some of XBOX's own fixes for common problems are.... TO CLEAR THE CACHE!!!!   (which i've twice in the past)
WTF, if this cache file issue is correct, Bioware's foundation for a MAJOR feature of the game is something the manufacturer tells people to delete on a regular basis?
I would kick them in the **** but it appears their heads are in the way.

I have been trying since the release date to get an answer from bioware and EA and all i've gotten is total silence....just like every other single person i've come across.

...wait, crud i just remembered this is a microsoft product....aw man, we should of seen this coming a mile away.

How much is a PS3 now?

Seems to me that since the day EA entered the Bioware picture, things are getting totally screwed up.

First, they screw up the European Dragon Age: Origins PC release, then repeatedly postpone DAO DLCs, release a DLC that screw game profles, and now give us this feature that needs a specific save file... that is overwritten as soon as you start playing the DLC or change console. Talk about a great way to loose any credibility!

And, faithful to EA's way to do business, silence about the problematic issues is now to be expected. What a shame...

I'm getting tried of people blaming EA. This is Biowares game and everything in game show thats level of detail. In fact Mass Effect 2 is better onthe tech side vs Mass Effect. Other then this one main issue the game is great ( granted us there are a few small bugs with sound and freezeing but what game of this scale does nto have them). This save game issue though is a huge thing. Something that should of been forseen.

Please will a dev pop in here and make a comment about the issue. I think most of us would be fine if we could just have a editor at the start to rebuild what our main Shepered did. I only had 1 transerfer work becuase I used the same save over and over to save me the hassle of haveing to go through 60 some saves. I beat the the game 7 times on 4 diffrent Sheperds. So if there is no way to fix the saved import issue then plz give us a editor at the start to build our own sheperd and not use the defualt one.

I think I found a way to import my char from ME1. In the location of ME2 save file there exists folder named "ME1" just copy your saves there and even if u have save+ u can still import that char. it worked for me. the path to save folder for me was C:\\\\Users\\\\USER_NAME\\\\Documents\\\\BioWare\\\\Mass Effect 2\\\\Save

hope it helps

The fact that this thread has over 240 posts, is ten pages long (now), isn't the only thread on this topic, yet Bioware employees are posting all around on other threads, indicates that they are hoping we cry ourselves to sleep, go away, or simply FOAD.

FIVE DAYS running and not even a "We're aware of the issue and are looking into it," reply is a slap in our faces by a company who has drunk enough of the EA Kool-Aid that they don't even care if all their hard work crafting a massive game is screwed up over a major gaffe like this. Just as EA ruined Spore with DRM - and Ubisoft is about to for all their games by requiring permanant online connections to play and save games - Bioware has decided that lying about the character import function (i.e that it works) and then turning their backs on those who are affected is an acceptable way of conducting business. Sad.

As I've posted before, this isn't a mid or end-game bug, but something that smacks the customer in the face within the first minute of popping the game in the drive. The feature the most loyal players anticipated doesn't work and Bioware clearly lied in their advertising about it. While those of us who bought it on release day are SOL, I can see this conversation happening a lot as word spreads:

GUY: "Hey, I got paid today. I can finally pick up Mass Effect 2."

BURNED ME2 OWNER: "Did you play the first one?"

GUY: "Yeah, I loved it. Played halfway thru a second time to level my character. Can't wait to continue in ME2 with it."

BURNED ME2 OWNER: "Then you're out of luck."

GUY: "Huh?"

BURNED ME2 OWNER: "The import utility doesn't work for everyone."

GUY: "You're kidding!"

BURNED ME2 OWNER: "Wish I was. People are all over the forums complaining about having to replay the game's ending; having to rebuy it because they'd sold it or lent it. A lot are giving up and just starting from scratch only to find that the choices it assumes may be totally different from how they played. They're pretty unhappy."

GUY: "Wow, that sucks. Are they patching it?"

BURNED ME2 OWNER: "That's the thing: the forums are full of threads about it and Bioware people are posting in other topics, but every single one of the import threads is being ignored. One is over 10 pages long, but after nearly a week, no one is saying anything. I'll bet they're hoping people just give up on complaining."

GUY: "Man, that sucks. How is the game?"

BURNED ME2 OWNER: "Oh, it's really cool, but between the reviews all mentioning crashes and bugs and this mess, you may want to think twice about getting it. Why not wait until it gets cheap used?"

GUY: "Good idea. Thanks for the warning. I'm going to post it on Facebook and warn my friends. Save them the hassle."

Way to fail, Bioware. Way. To. Fail.

Well, actually my problem is worse. I do HAVE a finished lvl 60 save, but ME2 shows me that one in orange, not selectable. I tried multiple times to load the last autosave and beating again Saren, resulting in 3 more orange, not selectable lvl 60 saves. I also have to do another playthrough sometime (on insane, last achievement) but i am afraid that it won't work too...

The faulty import utility might not have been such an issue for everyone if we had just not bought any of the DLC and left our save files at the end of the game. I guess the lesson EA/Bioware want us to learn is never to buy their DLC until/unless they have finished the release of the final game in their story arc.

Any public relations expert would tell Bioware how to handle this situation:

Acknowledge the problem.

Apologize.

Repair the problem.

Redemption.

It's not a difficult formula. The problem seems to be that it requires leadership, which is apparently, and sadly, lacking atm.

Bravo Bioware and EA. Could have told us the hoops up front. I only keep one save file so when I heard ME1 could be imported and would effect the game I started my second go thru of ME1. I only got through half of my second go thru when I got ME2. How about a patch to help us out since you hyped it up and didn't tell us all of the requirements. I really don't want to go back to ME1 for several days just to import. 10 pages of ticked off customers should tell you something!

Well I gave up on trying to salvage my me1 saves and just played the game. I have to say despite its draw backs (import utility) the game was great.

other than the bonuses for the me1 import does anybody know if it actually effects the games storyline?
